...if you don'T know from the title what this thread is about, you have never paid any attention to the pokémon community :p

The question is simple, the answer has been a battle for years. Raikou. Entei. Suicune. Great cats (lions, panthers etc)? Great dogs (wolves, etc)? Beasts with little to no to do with either cats or dogs?

I've ALWAYS said the following:

Raikou = tiger. Take your pick as to which species.
Entei = lion. Again, take your pick as to which species.
Suicune = wolf. Probably arctic wolf.

The reason they were originally called the legendary dogs or legendary cats was an attempt to do for them what we did for the original legendary birds and provide a quick two-word way to sum up all three. I attach it to the great laziness the majority of people have. Myself included.

Suicune as a wolf especially make sense in light of the way its use in the fourth movie seems to mirror the giant wolves in Mononoke Hime (with which Movie 4 was compared more than once).

Raikou appears to be a sabre-toothed tiger. Entei, a lion. Suicune appears to be either a wolf or a dog, particularly of the Afghan hound breed.

I could see it being a sabre-tooth tiger. That's one of the options that keeps coming back to me.

But I dunno if I could see Suicune as an Afghan. Maybe a dog breed, but not the Afghan in particular. Just the way the hair is on them...it just doesn't seem the same. Maybe a greyhound or a whippet. Or something similar.

This is a question that will never be answered, as some people are too stubborn to think that the Johto Legendaries could be anything other than what they think they are. I hold the same opinion as the rest above me. Raikou is a sabre tooth cat, Entei is a lion, and Suicune is some sort of big canine. I suppose it could be a wolf. I just call them the legendary beasts so that it would cover anything they could be said to be. I've even been bashed on that, so that is why I think it will never be solved. I have also suggested calling them the legendary runners/racers, as the game itself says they used to run around Ecruteak in ancient times.

Legendary Beasts for me.

To me:
Entei = Lion
Raikou = Tiger
Suicune = WTF??

Yeah, was never quite sure what Suicune was, so to be on the safe side I just referred to them as the Legendary Beasts or by their individual names.

Duh, they're bunnies. :rolleyes:

Actually, I think they are all cross-thingies of lions, panthers, cats, etc. Classifying them under one group would not cover what they are. They are just composite and fantastic Pokemon of real-life animals, with a little spice thrown in.

Raikou-Tiger. Duh.
Entei-Lion, I guess.
Suicune-No clue. It's a unicorn of some sort(if you go by the generalized "animal with one horn" definition), but...it doesn't seem like a dog to me(lack of fur, I guess. Of course, going by that Raikou's not a tiger...eh.) Come to think of it, its form looks similar to Houndoom's in a way, what with being leek and with the snout an all. I guess it could be a wolf. Or maybe whomever thought it up decided "Hey! Let's make a Legendary with no resemblance to anything! Fans will go crazy trying to figure out what it is! And since they'll think about it so much, it'll become popular and we can milk it for all the merchandising it's worth while ignoring the other two beasts! MUAHAHAHA!" >_>

Sorry for all the dog-lovers, but Suicune is not any form of canine. It is a feline. Take note of the diamond-shaped spots on its thighs and tell me what kind of dog has paws as small as that? To add to it, the tail, or tails rather. I know no dog that has a tail as long as that. Plus, if one has ever studied a cat's walk (and I have because I have had cats my entire life), they would see that no dog has the same elegance as a cat. Suicune is no dog, it is a feline. And from the spots, long tail, and speed, I would have to say that it is a spotted feline, mostly related to a Cheetah.

Sorry to jump in all uninvited, but...

I think that settles it. :lx129:

The confusion is that Suicune's muzzle isn't exactly feline. It's too long to be a feline.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Entei is a Pekinese (also called the "lion Dog") on major steroids. I used to own two pekinese and Entei reminds of the younger one. Entei has no muzzle and his mane isn't as large as a lion's.

Nowadays I tend to call them beasts. I never really considered what kind of animals they are - couldn't we say that they are mostly [cat|dog/wolf] with elements of [dog/wolf|cat] and other predatorial animals?

I can see it being a cheetah. But you want dogs with paws that small in relation to their bodies? It's hard to compare these pics with the one posted above...but you can get an idea:

American Water Spaniel
Belgian Malinois
Brittany
Canaan Dog
Chihuahua (THAT'S WHAT IT IS, I BET)
Curly-Coated Retriever
Doberman Pinscher
Greyhound
Ibizan Hound
Italian Greyhound
Pharaoh Hound
Schipperke
Vizsla
Whippet

There's the short list.

Draw on a purple mane and Suicune looks very much like a gray hounds in terms of body and head shape.

There have been a lot of talks about what is Suicune and I think its a cheetha/wolf, because its fast as a cheetha but it looks like a wolf. That is my thought about what is Suicune.

It makes one wonder if whoever made the designs of the trio made their origins confusing just so leave the fanbase arguing for years.
