CC vs Pokemon.com

There needs to be a policy made on what is trusted over what: closed captioning or http://pokemon.com ... and then put it somewhere where no one has to go guessing such a policy might exist.

There's Zander vs Xander, now Thatcher vs Batcher, and another I can't remember, but the point stands. For the sake of being encyclopedia and with a standard ground, which are we, overall, supposed to trust more when it comes to spelling of anime-exclusive subjects?
 
Then what about CC vs official subtitles?

For the Manaphy movie, they had 'Shep' on the TV CC, and 'Ship' on the subtitles.
 
Close captioning is definately more reliable than Pokemon.com. More people look over it to make sure its right.
 
I'm just wondering, why not take the names on Pokémon.com when they actually do reveal it since its supposed to be an official source?
 
Because why trust a second source when a first, such as one directly connected to the anime itself, will eventually make itself available? Technically, it is a second source; the only claim its official is that it gets the news first (in theory) and probably has some connections to all bits pokémon related.

No website should be the cross we swear on. Information directly from the horse's mouth is more solidifying than the information of the horse's harker.
 
So um...I know you guys are going to roll your eyes at my example, but the second movie captions identify the collector as being named Gelarden. It's only outside-movie sources such as the book adaptation that call him Lawrence III. Would movie name override book name?

(also, "Ship" is an incredibly stupid name)

However, I think it's the high time you excavated your DVDs and looked all unnamed character names in Subtitles! Really, there are so many Characters which are referred to by their Japanese names because no one bothered to check their English names.

Please, take your dusted Pokemon DVDs from your dusted shelves and check the fuckin' names/spellings. I'm going to make "Characters with an Unknown English name" and "Characters with an ambiguous English name spelling" categories to guide you what characters scream for a subtitle-check.

If you actually watch the movie, which I know is agonising, they clearly and audibly call him Shep, so that's two hints for Shep versus one for Ship...

Wouldn't captions/subtitles come above merch since they're made by the company who actually makes the show rather than a third party?

And subtitles wouldn't work here because they only subtitle dialogue and his name is never said aloud (given that he introduces himself by occupation). Gelarden is given once in the captions because he's talking offscreen, so it says who's talking (Tobias's name is given in a similar situation, because that's not said aloud either, and if my movie book is any indication, Tobias doesn't *have* a Japanese name since the books call him "chief". However most of the books don't call Dr Fuji by name either, which is very odd).

There was a character in early Hoenn whose name only appeared in the captions...he was the guy in the Shroomish episode, but I can't remember his name right now.

It was even weirder when I was watching my Masterquest dvds. Clair's assistant; half the time he was called "old man" and other times he was called "Kaburagi" which is obviously his Japanese name. He never got an official name in the dub.

I trust merchandise more. They have names from official source. I highly doubt that they make names up.

As for Lawrence III, all the merchandise calls him that. Comics, books, everything! Except the caption. I think we should follow the merchandise here because it has his ENGLISH name, created specifically for the English merchandise, while "Gelarden" is just an Engrished form of his Japanese name.

English > Japanese

My idea is: If a character didn't get the name in the anime/movie itself and the CC/Subtitles and Merchandise contradict each other. One of the media uses the Japanese name (or an Engrished form of it), while the other one uses a new name, created for the English version, then we choose the English one. If an English name was created for the character, then we must use it.

That's my view on that.

In Kaburagi's case, the only proper name used for him in any English media is Kaburagi - his Japanese name, then we should treat Kaburagi as his English name. Unless there is a book/merchandise which has a different English name for him, then we're trusting the merchandise.

In Tobias case - indeed, he doesn't have a proper name in Japanese. However, the Closed Captions refer to him as Tobias (and not only caption, the voice list in Polish DVD also lists the name "Tobias"), which means he HAS an official English name which was probably used in the script. So, we can use the name Tobias without any problem. It's official. And he is not the only character who isn't named in Japanese version but has a proper name in English. There are several more characters like that.

I know him. He's Alex/Azuma.
