When I start watching the DP series the characters are really dull, personality-wise (main characters, except for Dawn). Ash used to be fun in the Original Series when he was an immature retarded brat like he with those silly dialogues he comes up with, and he matured very well in Hoeen which was my favorite personality of Ash, he became more acceptable and really enjoyable to watch but now he is so plain and hardly fun, all I sense in him is his eagerness to battle. Ash used to bring a smile to my face and alot of laughs and WTF moments but now its not the same. But the most dullest personality is Brock! He is so boring, all he does is walk with the duo and says stuff like "I think its...". The only time he shines is when he sees a girl but that lasts for 8 seconds of the episode. Dawn is alright. Its just that if you compare the previous series with the current it seems like a whole different character and not really in a good way. Character development gone awry...

Why so much negativity!
Ash has matured - I'd find it ten times worse if he was still his older self.
The reason Brock seems dull is because he takes a backseat and the writers don't give him interesting dialogue or screentime, but when you do get a chance to actually see his personality I wouldn't say he was dull.
& I don't see what's wrong with Dawn. She's had a lot of character development, and for the better. Why should she be identical to May/Misty?

It's all a matter of opinion. To me, the DP cast had the best perosnality.

I vastly prefer mature Ash over idiot Ash. He seems so much more likeable and capable now.

Brock seemed pretty lively in the beginning of DP. But now toward the end, he does seem kind of dull.

Dawn, IMO, was amazing! Her determination was one of the best of her qualities. Her overconfidence was a quirk but was later resolved mid DP. I don't know. Dawn was and is the most likeable character as of now to me.

I don't think that I really would have wanted Ash to always be an idiot. It would have gotten to a stage where I'd be thinking "Erm, can you just grow up already?". Also, that kind of Ash put in a rivalry with Paul would be really odd, I'd actually admire Paul more then Ash and that isn't what I'm meant to be thinking.

This.

Maybe you're finding it hard to enjoy because you're expecting it to be the same as the earlier series?
Sure, Ash isn't as dumb anymore which means he isn't as funny. But I was watcing some early DP episodes today (Dawn's first contest) and he still has all his determination and his passion, so he still seems like the same character, just more mature. If you find him boring, watch the episodes with Paul, he is far from dull in those.

Brock, I have to agree, is a bit dull. Dawn, on the otherhand, gets a fair bit of development and plot so I'd say its worth watching more.

Having said that, this is just my opinoin, you may feel differently.

The problem about Ash in my eyes is his maturity leaves him boring and he is out of character. I dont want him to be an idiot like he was but I want him to be exciting and intruiging to watch. He is the main character of the series but watching few episodes it seems he is just there to watch. It would be fun if he did some hero work (excluding blasting TR off again). I like Dawn, heck I love her. Her personality and character has grown throug-out the series and I admire that. There is nothing about Dawn I hate, except chossing that annoying, obnoxious Poochama/Piplup :banghead:
Brock felt like a walking pokemon center for the group and the writers treated Brock wrong halfway through DP and not to mention the lack of conversation with Dawn. But overall I could bare this I just hope they make Ash fun like he was back then.

Perhaps my memory is terrible, but I don't ever remember Dawn being all that overconfident.

She was sure that she would win every contest and positive about everything. But it stopped during her long-depression, starting in Hearthome.

The only time I remember her being somewhat overconfident in her abilities was she was sure of herself, and wanted to prove how strong she was in the first Nando's episode. After that all I remember is her depression, and then her recovery.

True. But there were also some overconfidence moments here and there beforehand.

Because Ash staying exactly the same over 13 years is so desirable

Yeah, no. I like DP!Ash way more than I ever liked Kanto!Ash. Ash is still as driven, passionate, silly, single minded as he was at the beginning of the series but that is tempered by maturity now. Him not flying off the handle at every single little thing makes the times when he's actually full of rage and anger more awesome(and funny, depending on who he's angry with)

...and he has done some "hero work", what are you talking about? He's still helping out every CoTD that walks by, he clashed with Hunter J every time they met, he played a big role in the Team Galactic finale...

Brock, well...the biggest problem with Brock is that he's always in the backseat. Unlike in Kanto/Johto, Dawn is right beside Ash in the middle of all the action - him not doing much is more blatant than ever.

Right, so you want Ash to stay imature the entire series?
That'd get dull real fast, I liked series 1-3 Ash too, he was funny.
However, I love mature Ash a lot as well, he's kind of a mentor to the newbie kids who join him which is fun. I think he still has some pretty funny moments in him. Now Brock, I think the people of Pokemon just gave up on the guy for some reason. Dawn, I really don't see a problem with her at all. How is she like Misty? May I can understand cuz of contests, that's all though. Personality wise she's nothing like May or Misty.

Oh this again...

If you miss Ash of back then so much, watch the old seasons. Problem solved.

We'll be watching the new stuff with character developpement kthxbye.

He's right about Ash in DP. Aside from some moments here and there, Ash is really stale.

They should have kept Ash the way he was in Hoenn. He was mature there but still had parts of his old Kanto/Johto personality in tact.

The AG version of Ash was my favorite. He wasn't the same moron he was in Kanto/Johto, yet he wasn't stale and dull like he was in DP.

So you're offended because Ash grows and changes, leaving parts of his personality behind like real people do? I LIKE that about Ash; he's believable. He has goals. He makes real progress toward his goals. He suffers setbacks and learns from his mistakes. And it all changes him in the process.

And there's plenty more of his old personality there than "willingness to battle." Just look for it. Ash is still Ash.

For the most part, but he's only kept interesting by his Pokemon now.

Given how long Ash/Brock have known each other, its amazing how boring their friendship is. I remember the days it felt like Ash and Brock had a personality. Those are long gone.

I don't know what happened. I can't call myself a fan of either of them anymore because they're not the entertaining characters they once were. At least Brock is finally being retired to make up for it.

No, he's not. Some of his personality derives from his dealings with his Pokemon, but THAT'S WHAT THE SHOW'S ABOUT. But what about Ash's rivalries? They don't make him interesting too? Watch him try to deal with Paul, his exact opposite who beats him almost every time. Or Barry, who idolizes Paul.

The rivalries are done well, but what about Ash himself? It seems now we're basing Ash's personality based on how he interacts with others.

We can all describe Kanto Ash without saying how he interacted with Misty/Brock and Gary.

How do you describe Sinnoh Ash, not counting his interactions with Dawn or the rivals? I have trouble thinking of what his personality is, because it feels like a blank slate.

The fact is Ash doesn't really have a personality anymore, and that's what people dislike about what his character turned into.

Well, everyone has opinions you know. :/

I vastly prefer Ash's new personality over his old. Though, I feel that Ash has always had personality.

Sinnoh!Ash is full of determination and good will. Always helping COTDs with their problems. And he's caring and actually more knowledgable. It all depends on how you look at it.

Exactly. Ash in Hoeen was balanced and you can remember him as someone interesting but now I can only remember him as the one who had a rivalry with Paul and traveled in a trio with Pikachu.
Its hard to think what his personality is right now, it kinda seems random depending on the situation.
