Rumors began to swirl over the weekend, and now, it looks like Chris Hemsworth will be wielding Thor’s hammer for the upcoming Kenneth Branagh-directed film version of the Marvel Comics character.

The hunt was reportedly extensive for Marvel and Branagh, given that the actor must have both the acting ability as well as the body type and athleticism to play the Norse god of Thunder. According to Variety, signing on as Thor in the solo film automatically means that Hemworth will play the character in Marvel’s planned Avengers film in 2012.

Hemsworth was most recently seen playing George Kirk in the opening minutes of Star Trek, and will also play Jed Eckert in MGM’s upcoming remake of Red Dawn.

Never heard of this guy. Anyone who's seen Star Trek (or Hemsworth in something else) think he can pull off being a god?

Re: Chris Hemsworth to Play Marvel's Thor

Looking him up on Google Images, and he doesn't really seem to have the build for it. Of course he can bulk up and look much more like the character in a costume, but for now I'm scratching my head a bit.

Speaking of which, I hope the costume is more Ultimate Thor or even Modern 616 Thor than Classic 616 Thor. Always hated that costume.

Re: Chris Hemsworth to Play Marvel's Thor

Chris Hemsworth seems a bit on the small side to play Thor, unless the production plans to have Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as his personal trainer, but seriously Thor is a BIG What If movie for me because it'll either be great or really bad.

Sorry to hear that you're not a fan of the original classic Jack Kirby costume, Lil Brother. It's always been my personal favorite Thor costume.

I just want the guy to have a commanding voice. I can deal with him not looking like Lou Ferrigno from the old Hulk series, or Schwarzenegger in Conan, but...he's gotta have that big voice. There's nothing as unbelievable as a god with a high-pitched voice. Or a lisp.

Looks like Loki's been cast as well.

Marvel Studios announced today that Tom Hiddleston has been cast to play the villain Loki in the studio’s highly anticipated movie THOR. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film penned by Mark Protosevich and Ashley Miller & Zak Stentz.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce the film. The film will be released in the US on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: THOR. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

THOR reunites Hiddleston with Branagh, with whom he worked on the London production of Chekhov’s Ivanov. The talented actor and Branagh also starred together in the BBC miniseries Wallander.

Hiddleston’s credits also include Othello, in which he starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor at the Donmar Warehouse, and he played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's The Gathering Storm.

In 2008, Hiddleston was nominated twice for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer – for his role in Othello, and for his role in Cymbeline. He won the award for the latter.

In addition to THOR, Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including IRON MAN 2 on May 7, 2010, THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA on July 22, 2011, and THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Hiddleston is represented by ICM and UK agency Hamilton/Hodell. His manager is Jon Rubinstein and attorney is Jodi Peikoff.

With the right make-up and hair-style, I think this guy can pull Loki off.
