I don't know if this has come up in previous years, but I always think about this with any show/book/etc. that has Christmas:
What do you think Christmas celebrates in the Pokemon world? They have a different religion, so it can't be the birth of Jesus (since they have no Jesus), so what are your ideas on it?
My only idea is boring: they're celebrating winter. I know LAME. I can't come up with anything.

Before anyone goes all "quit overrationalizing" or whatever, this is purely for fun. I don't care how crazy or unbelievable your reasons are. This is just a little holiday fun.

Just thought of one: It's a ritual to appease Articuno so they don't wreak their frozen wrath upon the world.
See? Crazy is good.

They celebrate Festivus, obviously.

It's for the rest of us.

They likely celebrate it the same way most of Japan celebrates it—which is to say, they focus on the commercial aspect and pay very little, if any, attention to the religious aspect. At least, that's my understanding.

If the Pokémon world is indeed Earth, then Christianity probably does exist....in a different part of the world.

But, if the Pokémon world is not Earth....then Santa really gets around. :-D

They're celebrating the birht of Arceus' son. Or sons...Dialga, Palkia and Giratina.

Two things wrong with that statement:

1. If Christianity didn't exist in the Pokemon World, they wouldn't be celebrating "Christmas"

2. How many people actually celebrate Christmas as a non-secular holiday anyway -_-

Well, there was a episode of pokemon that was about Santa Claus and Christmas called Holiday Hi-Jynx (It just so happens to be one of the ones uploaded to CartoonNetwork.com). So I guess they do at least celebrate Christmas. As for the reasons behind Christmas, your guess is as good as mine? Birth of Mew?

For the last time, if it wasn't Christianity, there wouldn't be "Christmas" in the Pokemon world. I'm not being religious. Its just that you can't say they have Christmas and change what it was fundamentally based on. Deal with it. They have real life references in Pokemon, if they have Christmas, its because they have Christianity somewhere in the Pokemon World.

They don't even worship Arceus as a god in modern Sinnoh. Notice how they always refer to it as a creature of mythology?

Well, I've always supported the idea that the Pokémon world is Earth, but with Pokémon (and with different names for major parts of Japan). There have been enough references to real-world locations and culture in both the video games and the anime to convince me that this is basically an alternate reality type of thing. So this theory seems to be the most believable. I'm sure they have Christianity, Shintoism, Buddhism, and every other real-life religion (not to mention whatever Arceus is supposed to be a part of).

Wouldn't it be Mewmas, or Pokemas?

Anyways, the anime gives us the idea that it's pretty much our story of santa... and probably not much else.

Would that make it a false religion there?

You people aren't overthinking this... you're underthinking.

They obviously celebrate Christmas because Christianity exists somewhere in their universe. Why is this so hard to wrap your head around?

Sure, there may be other beliefs that rest beside these. Shamanic and pagan beliefs would probably be everywhere. But they refer to it as Christmas, then that's what it is. Stop underthinking and turn your brains on, people.

If I remember correctly, there was an episode early on in the anime where Misty tried to use a Cross to ward of an evil Gastly, and Gastly said something about it not being a vampire. The idea that a Cross would fend of a vampire originated in Christian Europe, so that would further support that there's Christianity somewhere in the Pokemon world.

I really don't understand where all this mention of Arceus comes in. I get that he's supposed to be the creator of the Pokemon Universe in Sinnoh region mythology, but that wouldn't make him the one true God of the Pokemon universe or anything. I mean, for one, there's the fact that its legend is only really told in the Sinnoh region, and even there, only a handful of people seem to know about it. Plus, there have been plenty of religeons and cultures around the world where the diety responcible for the creation of the universe wasn't actually the Cheif Diety of its respective pantheon.

Christamas is celebrating arcious and the creation of pokemon. since arcious is supposed to be the creator of pokemon.

There was a pikachu short. Which was a small dubbed christmas/winter specail realesed awhile back. Along with the CD from pokemon known as pokemon christmas bash. The pikachu short was known as pikachu's winter vacation. These can be found on youtube! (Not trying to advertise only pointing out something!)

*facepalm*

For not reading the other posts regarding this, and also the fact that Christmas doesn't even celebrate God. We call that Sunday. It celebrates the birth of what Christians see as the Savior that forgave their sins and allowed them to be able to enter heaven.
