Chronologically, when does "Mewtwo Strikes Back" take place?

I know, in Japan, it was aired after "Case of the K-9 Caper", but we later learned from the episodes "The Battle of the Badge" and "It's Mr. Mime Time" that it took place long after. Ash did not use Pidgeotto, and New Island seemed pretty close to his location, so it's safe to assume it takes place in between "Pallet Party Panic" and "A Scare in the Air", also known as "Spirits in the Sky" to some, since Ash did not use Pidgeotto in the movie, and Brock was around in the movie.

What do you guys think?

It was in theaters that early? O_O. I'd have assumed they'd at least try to release it after ThePoke Corrale episode

Pidgeotto wasn't in the movie but he was in the Pikachu's vacation short.

Chronologically, I think it would fit best after "Go West Young Meowth" but before "Bad to the Bone". I don't think it comes after Pallet Party Panic, since Pidgeotto did appear in the short, and it used "Mezasei Pokemon Master" as it's opening theme, which makes it more of an "Indigo League" movie (Pallet Party Panic was the first Orange Islands episode, technicly)

No, it does fit around that "Battle of the Badge" episode or whatever, because during that episode you see a scene of Mewtwo flying away with his armor falling off, which is a scene in the movie. So I'm pretty sure it took place right after Ash won his 8th badge, and then during the couple months he had off before the Pokemon league.

BUT, it's always possible that a couple months passed after Mewtwo initially flew to the island to when he actually started inviting trainers there for the competition, thus bringing Ash and the gang there. In that case, then it's possible that it could take place aroud Pallet Party Panic.

...I'm still gonna go with my first thought, though.

Okay, I think it might go between "Lights, Camera, Quacktion!" and "Go West, Young Meowth", for the reason that in the first ep, they were traveling around a bit, so the opening scene of the movie would make sense with them out in the wilderness a bit. It also allows a little time for the movie they watch in the second episode to be made; even B-movies need a little time, and I doubt it was a 48-hour thing. :) so yeah, I think it fits best between those two eps.

It depends. It all takes place in Kanto, so it being "OI episode" would be like counting "A Rivalry Revival" as a Johto ep. And it has 1st opening for sure (Pokeball Peril is arguable; here it also has 1st OP, and that's what we got from 4kids, not our dubbers messing up).

The opening changed from "Mezasei Pokemon Master" to "Rivals" in Pallet Party Panic, in Japan. It uses the second opening on the DVDs. The only reason 4kids/WB didn't change the intro on time was because they wanted to keep Brock's departure a secret until it actually happened.

I was really annoyed that for the longest time, many sites (including Serebii) listed "Lights, Camera, Quacktion!" as where MSB took place, because the Japanese name for that episode was Pokemon the Movie . . .

what they should do in the show, they should have an episode that takes place after the movie were they just simple talk about what had happen to them and what they did in the movie...

I was thinking of a response to that post but then I realised that I can just go with this: The whole thing with them forgetting what happened makes that a little hard. ;-)

About the whole "Pidgeotto in the short" thing: Who the heck said the short happened before the movie anyway? Chances are, that the short takes place after "Case of the K-9 Caper", while the actual movie takes place months later.

Rachel: It must have been a few months, because the enslaved Nurse Joy was missing for months on the first movie, unless that was just 4Kids' mesed up script.

I wouldn't really give too much thought to Pidgeotto's non-appearance in the movie. The episodes featuring Mewtwo were made to tie into the movie, true, but I really don't think the writers thought "Hey, Pidgeotto wasn't in that movie we made half a year ago, let's have Ash release it so it ties in with the story!"

It obviously takes place after Showdown at the Poke-corral, as that's when Mewtwo is shown escaping from Team Rocket, it obviously doesn't take place during the league, and I really can't see it taking place during the short period the group spent in Kanto after the league either. As of Poke-corral, it was established to be 3(?) months until the league started, which took the anime 7 episodes to cover. It's pretty clear the movie was supposed to take place at this point. I have it pinned down right after The Pi-kahuna myself, though that's more because of Ash's relative closeness to the sea and a port (being that he's on Seafoam Island), as well as quite obviously not near Pallet, and New Island, as we see on the large pan-out at the end of the movie, is supposed to be in that general area (isn't there a map of locations in the anime that placs the island here as well?).

Adamant has a point, and Pidgeotto had it coming anyway.

Really, where was Pidgeotto?

It takes place when Ash and the gang had some bad sandwiches, because of Brock's cruddy cooking. So they all thought that they saw Mewtwo strike back, but they really didn't! xo

But they didn't think they saw it. They forgot it ever happened until Mewtwo Returns!

Pidgeotto was being used by that other guy... The one who nicknamed his Pidgeot "Pidgeotto".

They remembered it in Mewtwo Returns? Or are you joking at Ash's "This time we'll both remember!" line?

I've no idea what is up with that in Mewtwo Returns.

I'll have to rewatch it one day.

I think the movie takes place somtime between the episode "Showdown at the Poke Corral" and the Pokemon league because two of the scenes in the movie also appear in the anime. One of them is from "The Battle of the Badge" where Mewtwo is beating Gary's Nidoking and Arcanine, and the other scene is from "Showdown at the Poke Corral" where Mewtwo escapes from Giovanni's place.

Am I remembering COMPLETELY wrong, or isn't there some mention at the very beginning of (Ash's scenes in) MSB that Ash is training for the league or something along those lines?

It's been several years since I last saw it, though.

No, all we are told is this: "Today, Ash, Brock and Misty are taking a short break from their Pokémon adventures." (Followed by the character description of Ash that he then fails to match up to. :p)

Pallet Town is near the coast so I'm placing the movie between The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis and Bad to the Bone.
