A mother whose three-year-old boy lit a cigarette butt and smoked it in front of her has received a suspended jail sentence. Skip related content

Pocock, a mother-of-three from Sarah Street, Merthyr Vale, South Wales, appeared in court for sentencing after pleading guilty to one count of cruelty to a child under 16 at a hearing last month.

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees told Merthyr Crown Court: "The video demonstrates the boy placing a cigarette into his mouth, lighting it with a lighter and sucking, drawing smoke clearly into the lungs and he seems to do it with some accomplishment.

"It doesn't cause him any discomfort. He is sat on a chair close to the mother, who is talking on the phone.

"It is clear that the boy, at the age of three, knows what to do with a lighter and cigarette."

After being charged, Pocock entered a guilty plea on the basis that she had not seen her son smoking before.

Judge John Curran said the case was one of the most "extraordinary" he had ever come across.

He said: "This is an appalling situation and I don't see how, despite your basis of plea, you could have been unaware of the fact".

He that while the offence would normally cross the custody threshold, he did not want to cause her children any further emotional harm by separating them from their mother.

Judge Curran also acknowledged the "considerable efforts" Pocock had taken to improve the situation.

Pocock was sentenced to 40 weeks imprisonment, suspended for two years. He also imposed a 12-month supervision requirement.
discuss.
how could she not notice?!

A smoking 3 year old?! That's messed up! How can she let him do that?!

she didnt he mustve found them and saw how his mom did it

Well yeah, pretty much never leave cigs where a kid can get them.

people never learn from that like the cop who left his gun out and his two year old son found it enough said

A cop did what?! Anyway, that's a bad momma.

Wonder how the kid learned how to use the lighter...

Oh my God! What the hell is wrong with people nowadays!? They just let their kids do whatever they want.

For God's sakes, Pocock, the boy is three years old! If you didn't notice he was smoking, when you should be around him all the time, you're a terrible mother. That kid is going to be seriously fucked up when he grows older.

I have a picture of my kiddie self posing with a cigarette. My aunt, a smoker, apparently thought it was funny. Ah, the good ol' days ...

I despise the taste of them so much that I never smoked. There isn't enough peer pressure in the world to make me try smoking or chewing tobacco.

Personally, I'm more concerned she let the kid play with fire than just the cigarette. I really can't imagine a kid thinking that stuff tastes good. If the kid is just imitating her, then she maybe lost a good teaching opportunity.

to be honest, how EXACTLY did a 3 yr old child open a pack of ciggerettes, take one out, get the lighter the right way round, have the strangth AND aptitude to use the lighter then get it near the end of the ciggerette and, whilst still holding down the correct part of the lighter to keep the gas flowing inhale and light a ciggarette.

please!, the story screams of tabloid sensationalism! something small like a child picking up some thing inapropriate (i drink a bit of my mums vodka and orange when i was young, doesnt mean my mum allowed me to or wanted me to) suddenly leads to a parent not paying enough attention

dont let the media lead you guys and girls.............

What the hell! There's no way that a kid would be able to actually light and smoke a cigarette without someone teaches him/her how to. The kid would most likely just burn a hand by using the lighter.

I find the sentencing a little....extreme. I mean, she didn't say 'OK Johnny, S is for smoke, now do it just like your mom :D'. She should have been charged with child neglect at most.

This is just like cleaners, guns, medicine, and what-not. If you can't use them right, then child-proof them or something.

Damien, I haven't smoked, but it really is not that hard to light a cig and smoke it.

Well, I don't know about elsewhere, but all disposable lighters sold in the United States are required to have child safety mechanisms on them. I would guess that the same would be the case elsewhere in the world as well. I feel that this news story is a bit exaggerated as well, unless the actual video of this happening exists to show how exactly this kid did this...

That's wrong. :S

I can't believe the mom would let him. O_O
People nowadays are stupid. .-.

I could barely write my name when I was three. I couldn't imagine trying to figure out how a lighter works. Even now I have trouble working those things. And no, I don't smoke, but I do have a lighter just in case I need it. But I can't imagine a parent allowing a child to smoke, I've heard of dumb people before, but that's outrageous!

not for yourself no, because you have the mental capacity to do so....

you would look at someone lighting a ciggerette with a lighter and think

"ok, my thumb goes on this bit here and pulls down this bit, then i hold my thumb on a seperate section to ensure the gas comes out and keeps the flame alight"
yeah ok, thats easy.

a three year old on the other hand (and im assuming your not 3), would look at a person lighting a cigerette and think, with its lower cognitive reasoning...

"ok, my thumb goes on one end (top and bottom of the lighter would be lost to a baby) and i move it in a direction (why should it move down? the baby doesnt understand the idea of a flint) and then fire comes out (the baby also wouldnt understand that gas is making the fire, so wouldnt always holds its thumb in the right place)"

further more most children i have met, upon getting a lighter to work and a flame to come out, most probally would drop the lighter with fright. then of course remember one the THREE YEAR OLD has managed to work the lighter and hold the gas dopwn long enough, hes then got to put a ciggerette in its mouth, move the lighter to the end of the cigrette (still holding the gas button!!) and inhale.....

yes, using a lighter is pretty hard, IF YOUR THREE!
