Something I noticed about Ein. His Golbat evolved into Crobat between the first two battles with him. This would mean he would have had to have a strong connection to it since Crobat only occurs via friendly evolution. This would point out that Ein may care for his own Pokémon but not others. He has his Gol/Crobat in all 3 battles so he must have some sort of like for it. I brought this up on Bulbapedia's Ein talk page and was told to bring it up here.

Did Ein ever give any insight into his view on the project he was assigned too? Motivated out of money or did he really not care about any Pokémon. If we can find some evidence of some kind we may be able to put it in the article.

Cipher managed to lock the hearts of Pokémon. I'm sure they're also capable of changing them, thus triggering a happiness evolution.

That could be true.

Was the actual process of closing the door to it's heart ever explained. I don't recall it being so.

The way I see it, it's really easy to get an animal to hate you and much harder to earn it's trust. I'm not sure if they could artifically "open it's heart" enough to induce a friendly evolution.

I would think they would have a way to force the evolution, like Team Rocket did with the Magikarp into Gyarados.

Or

The Pokémon could have been use to how it was treated or it was how it was trained and saw it was friendship for its trainer. Development on how it was raise influence its personality. I see it like that.

Yeah, it may have been his exception.

Well, thanks for all the replies.

Actually, the only "sympathetic" characters to have used Crobat are Koga, Janine and Agatha. Silver, Maxie, Archie and Akagi join Ein as being "unfit" to fill Golbat's required happiness quota.

In my opinion, Akagi presents more problem than the rest, including Ein. Part of Ein's research, as explained in his notes, was to investigate purification. He must have observed that the shut on a Shadow Pokémon's heart loosens much in the same way that a normal Pokémon grows happy with its trainer. For Shadow Pokémon whose purpose is to remain such, those side-effects are negative; for Pokémon such as Golbat who become stronger upon an evolution triggered by happiness, they are obviously positive. Ein was able to make the distinction and used it to his advantage.

The other four were most likely not as informed of the importance of happiness, but by simply training their Golbat without bringing them to the point of constant fainting - they allowed for happiness points to accumulate. This is proof that even from a storyline perspective, happiness has certain mechanics behind it that do not necessarily boil down to showing affection.

I guess those are logical theories, but I always just thought it was a developer's oversight...like how Falkner has a Pidgeotto below level of evolution.,

I'd like to argue this by saying that when Silver got a Crobat, he had finally learned to care for his Pokémon. Thus, I believe he goes in the group with Koga, Janine, and Agatha.

Thinking all this over, Venus has a Blissey when you fight her in Deep Colosseum. That's interesting....

Venus seems like the type to dote on her cutesy Pokemon though, even if she is a member of an evil gang.

In the manga, Jasmine has a Togetic; and we all know she's an evil bitch.
