A thread to contain my scattered thoughts about my fan region/games, Pokemon Dawn and Dusk. Since those are generic names that I wouldn't be surprised some other fanwork has already used, I mostly refer to it by the region name. I've actually put off posting about this for a while because I was struggling to come up with one I liked, and honestly I'm not super in love with 'Citlalloco' (loosely 'starry place') but I just decided to force myself to choose something haha.
The region is based on Mexico, though like the real games 100% accuracy and thematic relevance aren't too big a concern. I'm trying to strike a balance between taking inspiration from real culture and history while also doing my own thing. The broad strokes of real history are there, including allusions to past invasion by the Paldean Empire, but I don't want to put too much focus on themes of colonialism and racism for... I think obvious reasons. In the modern day there's a bit of a rivalry between the two regions, but most of the actual vitriol is gone.
I'll go more in depth on the story when I have proper visuals to go with it. For now, I'll just say it's kind of a standard 'trainer recieving their first Pokémon to take on the gym challenge and things get wild and the box legends get involved.' But I've had fun drafting it and designing the characters.
The layout of the region itself is pseudo-open world, taking inspiration from recent games like ScarVio, PLA, and specifically Galar's Wild Areas. Although I haven't actually played ScarVio so the inspiration there is moreso just from reading about it. The region's divided into four main 'zones' with two gyms each. The first and last gyms are fixed, and so is the order you reach the zones in, but you can skip around however you like and the fights scale based on the number of badges acquired. I'll also give more detail on this once I have maps drawn up, but it's basically a squished version of its real world counterpart. The 'California' peninsula and waters around it comprise one zone, then a deserts and arid forest/plains zone, then a high elevation/mountain zone, and then the tropical zone. In that order, from the northwest to southeast corners of the region.
Art to come. Hopefully someone else enjoys my silly musings : P
