A thread to contain my scattered thoughts about my fan region/games, Pokemon Dawn and Dusk. Since those are generic names that I wouldn't be surprised some other fanwork has already used, I mostly refer to it by the region name. I've actually put off posting about this for a while because I was struggling to come up with one I liked, and honestly I'm not super in love with 'Citlalloco' (loosely 'starry place') but I just decided to force myself to choose something haha.
The region is based on Mexico, though like the real games 100% accuracy and thematic relevance aren't too big a concern. I'm trying to strike a balance between taking inspiration from real culture and history while also doing my own thing. The broad strokes of real history are there, including allusions to past invasion by the Paldean Empire, but I don't want to put too much focus on themes of colonialism and racism for... I think obvious reasons. In the modern day there's a bit of a rivalry between the two regions, but most of the actual vitriol is gone.
I'll go more in depth on the story when I have proper visuals to go with it. For now, I'll just say it's kind of a standard 'trainer recieving their first Pokémon to take on the gym challenge and things get wild and the box legends get involved.' But I've had fun drafting it and designing the characters.
The layout of the region itself is pseudo-open world, taking inspiration from recent games like ScarVio, PLA, and specifically Galar's Wild Areas. Although I haven't actually played ScarVio so the inspiration there is moreso just from reading about it. The region's divided into four main 'zones' with two gyms each. The first and last gyms are fixed, and so is the order you reach the zones in, but you can skip around however you like and the fights scale based on the number of badges acquired. I'll also give more detail on this once I have maps drawn up, but it's basically a squished version of its real world counterpart. The 'California' peninsula and waters around it comprise one zone, then a deserts and arid forest/plains zone, then a high elevation/mountain zone, and then the tropical zone. In that order, from the northwest to southeast corners of the region.
Art to come. Hopefully someone else enjoys my silly musings : P

First I'll show off the fire starter. The water's still being drawn and I actually don't have anything for the grass yet- suggestions welcome. I feel bad uploading big files but linking to pictures on Tumblr doesn't seem to work...

In the spirit of October, some ghost regional forms.

The last two could use redesigns or redraws at some point, but I'm happy enough with them for now.

As a fellow Fakemon Artist/Spriter I must say... where has Duscalavera been all my life? Like genuinely this thing looks AWESOME, ticking all the "Awesome Ghost Type" boxes for me!

Started as a concept doodle and ended up being a full piece, oops. Btw I work on these in a very erratic way; typically I'm bouncing between multiple designs at a time, dropping some and coming back to them later, withholding some to post along with something else, etc. So I don't know when I'll reveal what this is teasing, but whatever, happy Spooky Month.

I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING! Or it's some sick and twisted Gyarados creepypasta thing... Either is great!

They're here~! This one was my experiment with going more crazy concept wise, what if parasitic isopod but also mermaid but also a tiny bit of Aztec mythology?
I've seen mermaids drawn with the torso coming out the mouth of the fish part before, and thought that would combine well with tongue eating lice (isopods that live in the mouths of fish). The Aztec mythology part is probably what needs a bit more clarification; the god Xipe Totec ('Our Lord the Flayed One) is typically depicted as having no skin himself and wearing human skin, and I connected that with a parasite wearing the skin of another animal. Obviously there's a ton more to go into with him, but that's the only asepct that made it into the final designs. I initially wanted to put more detail into the 'armor', connecting with him also being the patron god of gold- and silversmiths, but ultimately decided to keep it simple.
I wouldn't consider these designs much more disturbing than official pokemon like parasect or hisuian zoroark, but, still, warning for dead fish and 'gore'. (Their skin's just naturally red, but it is meant to look like blood/flayed flesh)

I actually don't like the name of this one but I had so much trouble coming up with anything...
The idea of their ability is that they disguise as a magikarp/gyarados and are only revealed upon taking a hit, like a limited version of Zoroark's Illusion combined with Mimikyu's Disguise.
I also have some extras for these two. Magikarp is sort of the 'default', they're weak and probably uniquely susceptible (close your damn mouth) but I'd like to imagine it would have multiple forms depending on the skin it wears, maybe even with a unique pseudo-signature move for each form (hurricane for gyarados, earth power for whiscash, etc.). I'm a little bit in love with these things, I may have a problem...

OMG it's SO COOL. And so SCARY, I genuinely cringed at seeing them the first time, as they should! I love isopod like creatures, so a ghost type twisted tongue eating louse?! It's AWESOME. Though it, pains me to see a Gyarados go through that, that looks painful... Do Desoyoli hunt big fish mon like Gyarados or does the Magikarp 'body' evolve along with it?

My thought is the latter, they're pretty weak on their own and probably need to steal a host's energy to even evolve in the first place.

Two standalones that would feel awkward to post by themselves, that happen to both be flowers. So they go together I guess.

This was actually the first thing I ever made for this region, almost a full year ago now. It was my first attempt at an art edit as well, and I like to think it holds up.

I've seen a lot of people talk about a potential fire type evolution for sunflora, so I don't know how original this design is. I just think it would be funny to give her the alolan exeggutor treatment.

Amazing updates in here recently!! I adore the isopods!!! I really love the way that they have a full body that is presumably rarely seen, I always think that’s a fun Pokémon design detail. Like Burmy’s body or what have you.

Also I LOVE Suntower!!!! I love the way her face looks more like an older kinda ragged sunflower and that she has the barbs/spines!! Amazing!!!

Before I even read anything on it, I saw that Roserade, I just thought "oh yeah this thing would mug me", and I was half right XD. Prankster Toxic Spikes Roserade O.O
I love Suntower so much more than most Sunflora fan evos, it looks so friendly!
