I think the users should be given the option of closing the threads they created besides deleting them forever.

I understand, but there have been times when I wanted to close the thread(sth like that) instead of deletin' it once and for all.

At least the thread-creators should have the power? Then a mod could delete it if he/she sees that it was better deleted.

If everyone had the power to close their own thread, some people might post a spam thread and then lock it before others can respond. Moderators are trusted to keep the peace so they get the power to lock threads. You could always ask a moderator to lock the thread for you at their discretion.

Mods could delete the alleged 'spam' thread....
Besides, sometimes a mod may not find it reasonable to close a thread, while many may not find the reason not to do so....

Lets see what others think.

If a moderator doesn't think it's reasonable to lock a thread, then that should be the final verdict. I mean, it is a forum that they are moderating and have trusted powers over, that they've earned and most likely proved themselves making good & intelligent decisions in that area of the forums or another. I think it would be quite pointless also, there are not many people who make threads that want them locked, they usually want feedback on them. In addition, if there was a reasonable purpose to close a thread - such as a posting of a guide or such - moderators usually take the initiative to lock it, due to it having an actual beneficial purpose. In my honest opinion, I feel like this option would be uselessly redundant in most cases, abused in some, and the portion of people who would actually utilize this tool for what it's centrally intended for would be better off messaging a moderator to lock it. Locking is a tool for moderators and administrators, and I think it should stay that way.

Edit: It would be much easier to just occasionally get a moderator to lock a thread, than to delete all the 'locked thread spam' that would be a side-effect for adopting this tool.

There is a report button, click that and type in; "Please close my thread because ________. Thank you." and tada.

^You can do that? I thought reporting was only for reporting rude or mean posts?

It is, if you click it, it clearly notes below the entry box:

"Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts."

Plus, for what it would be used for, it would cause more load for moderators to go through all the reports and see which are actually valid to respond to.

Every person should have a right to close there thread. If somebody makes a spam thread, infract them.

Watch people close a thread because a majority of people disagree with the OP's opinion, even if their disagreement is valid :/

Users can, I believe, close their own thread. "Advance edit" the first post and the option should be towards the bottom.

Actually, I'm apart of another community, GaiaOnline, Where users are granted the ability to close there own threads, and delete spam posts in there own thread. Its very useful for people with shops and Roleplays, and no one has abused it yet, in four or so years. So, I think being able to close your own threads here on this site would be helpful in some areas.

Really? I can close my threads in areas I don't modetate. Well then, nevermind.

Nope us normals can only delete or edit, not close. That's why I always used the report button for a mod to close my threads but today I got told by Sketch so I can't do that anymore unless I wanna be chewed out by Rex or Sketch.

Please note: The thread is from 16 years ago.
Please take the age of this thread into consideration in writing your reply. Depending on what exactly you wanted to say, you may want to consider if it would be better to post a new thread instead.
