As you know from my comments about the Pokemon anime, I watch tv with the captions on. Helps my comprehension.

But none of the Japanese VHS I've gotten, even those taped directly off tv, have any captioning. Do they not have it there? Am I just watching all the wrong shows? Or is my machine not picking it up?

Japanese closed captioning is not likely to show up on a TV not for use in Japan. Even TVs manufactured for Japan sometimes need an external device to render the closed captioning.

Also, not all shows are broadcast with closed captioning. Those that are usually have 字幕放送 stamped on them at the beginning - like Pokémon. Oddly enough, the DVDs don't seem to have any closed captioning.

That's kind of strange, why wouldn't the DVDs carry captions when the broadcast episodes do?

Hmm. I guess I'd have to get a Japanese tv to determine if my tapes have 'em.
