I would like to have a current events forum for discussion of (real life) news, politics, etc. Most young people I have met are woefully ignorant of current events, and I think we should provide an information and discussion source. I could post a daily round-up of the day's important and interesting stories. Yes, this could go in Outside the Box, but a daily post plus discussion of individual topics, some which change daily, would clog Outside the Box.

I don't know what the name would be, and I'm open to suggestions.

Sounds like a good idea. Im allways amazed every time I visit google news...
Maybe call it: "the News You Need To Know Thread" O.o

Given that this would necessarily touch on religion and other hot button topics, since that's what actuality often is, you could always take Soap Box and turn it into that.

Most of the interesting flame wars have been done, redone, and reredone several times already anyway, and all that happens there these days is the occasional burst of flames over whether or not Barb is a good Christian, and whether that's good or bad.

(And the everyone-point-and-laugh-at-the-conservative-newbie moments).

We'd probably be better off without the current soap box, or with Soap as a no-holds-barred sub-forum to your news forum.

("The Real World" would be a nice name)

This sounds like a pretty good idea. I think there should be one for worldly news and one for news on games, anime, novels, etc. - if there isn't already one...

Yes, this sounds like a good idea for a forum. Actually, I believe there was a current events forum on Bulbagarden at one point. I remember there being one......

Anyway, speaking about names for a forum, back when I first registered (in 2003), there was a forum on BMGf where every month a person would be nominated, and that person would get to *choose* the name of that particular forum.

I forgot which forum that was originally (maybe Fun, Clubs, and Games? or Outside The Box?). But I thought that was a pretty clever idea to have people nominate a member to come up with a new name for the forum each month. ^_^

Hehe, some of the titles people came up with were really funny, others had a certain "theme" to them, and some titles were completely random. It was very interesting, that's for sure. XD

Yup., and what Argy put forth is completely different :-)

As soon as we decide on a name I can make the forum. :)

"The Real World" is a good title.
I find that funny just cause I'm watching that show right now.

I do think that this would be a good idea though. I really feel like I'm out of it when it comes to news, and whenever I do watch like CNN I'm just kinda like "wtf, when did this all happen."

I think it would be best to combine it with the "Soap Box" and then change the name to something else.

Just rename the Soap Box something else and give it a subforum titled the No Man's Land for those who really feel an urge to be flamey :-D

At this point, all we get out of Soap Box is a place where hyper-conservatives can go pretend they're Spartans in 300.
