Competetive Battlers, I need your assistance...

I've been planning my universe out, doing research on animal behaviours, Nintendo past and the like, and I've just thought: I'm doing fics with a Pokémon Battler alongside A.D and Cynthia, yet I've done no research at all into the whole thing. After kicking myself, I'm posting this to ask for assistance on the thing.

My character, Peter, starts out with Charmander and goes around the Kanto region. It basically follows the Pokémon Red, Green and Blue times, such as Pokémon not holding items, the movesets of the era. Can any Competetive Battler give me advice on what party Peter should have?

If it's Red, Green, Blue era, then I'd say stuff like Slowbro, Starmie, Alakazam.
The trick in RGB was to use Psychic types. A whole lot of Psychic types.

Smogon should have RGB tiers somewhere, if you feel like looking.

Smogon? I've heard of the name but I've never really paid much mind to it. I shall have a look, but I'd rather get a more personal view.

Smogon is the site that somehow has got the power to dicatate pretty much all of competitive battling.

Anyway, if you want powerful gen 1 Pokemon then definitely some Psychic types. Dragonite, Ryhdon, Golem, and Gyarados are also very powerful competitors.
