Hey Everyone,

So here is the deal. I really like Quilava and I was wondering if there is ANY set you can run where you have a reason to run Quilava instead of Typhlosion. The only reason I can think of is Eviolite. Is there a build you can run where it makes sense to run a Quilava with an eviolite? Some quick math made it clear you do get more defense than a Typhlosion, but what good is a ''semi bulky'' Quilava/Typhlosion anyway?

I think its cool to think outside of the box, so any help with a competitive Quilava would be greatly appreciated! Move sets, stats, nature, etc :) Or should I just drop this idea?

If you really wanted to use him you could use a scarf set

Quilava@ Choice Scarf
Blaze
Timid
252 SpA/252 Spe/4 HP

Eruption
HP Grass
Extrasensory
Will-O-Wisp

This really is the best you could do. Due to it's limited move pool and poor stats it really isn't a great option.

I don't really see many opportunities to use it competitively tbh. Just because there are better choices for Fire types like Infernape or Talonflame to use. If Typhlosion ends up in NU like it normally does I don't really see any reason to use Quilava just because of its slim Movepool like Koala said.

Quilava is not going to be the optimal choice for any role, as has already been stated, but if this is a, "Make my favorite pokemon viable," scenario, you could try something like:

Sunny Day
Flame Charge
Solar Beam
Fire Blast

I still think Typhlosion would run this set better*, but it seems feasible. Basically you run Flame Charge to boost your Speed, set up Sunny Day, and attempt to sweep with Fire Blast/Solar Beam.

*Typhlosion can drop the Eviolite for a Focus Sash and activate Blaze.

But wouldnt a Choise Scarfed Typhlosion just be 100% better? The only thing I could think of was Eviolite, which makes Quilava's defensive stats better then Typhlosion. But what would be a good move set for a defensive mediocre fire pokémon? =p

I take it everyone agrees its not do-able?

None, quilava's weakness to all entry hazards, poor stats, lack of a recovery move, and EQ weakness make it a terrible defensive mon. There's really no reason to use quilava at all much less turn him into a defensive pokemon. The most viable set is a scarf set and that's not even good.

Yeah it might be more viable if Typhlosion was actually good but you're trying to take a step down from a NU mon.
What I would do if I were you is look into Middle Cup and try to use Quilava there. :)
