Hey, sup you pretty face.
OK I've been thinking of maybe getting a new laptop lately since senior year will be over quickly and my mom is pressuring me to go to college. My current laptop, in all honesty, as good as it is for me, I wouldn't use for college. I've had it for the last 4 months, it's still practically brand new. I was thinking of buying a newer, better one, and giving this one to my mom. Now I so far don't have anything special I'm looking for, but I've had my eye on the Sony Vaio laptops for a long while now. So if you have any suggestions for a good, decent priced laptop I'll research it and take it under consideration. It needs to be fast with good memory. Also please don't say Mac's because I will probably never own nor use one in my life (Mac users, don't take this to heart, I just strongly prefer Windows machines), and I will be looking into upgrading the laptop to Win7 from Vista if I buy it.

Honestly I'll take any suggestion into consideration. Thanks in advance to anyone.

Windows 7 is coming out this month, so you're in luck (from what I heard, it's FAR better than Vista :D)

Anyways, I wouldn't suggest Sony. They don't tend to last very long.

Otherwise (yes I know you said no Macs), get a Mac.

Why? Because you can get Windows 7 on it too. Apple sells Macbooks to students at a much lower price - you might like it.

Thanks for replying. But can you tell me why a Mac would be better? I have used the new ones with the Snow Leopard (at my local BestBuy) and I don't find it anything special. The OS and computer isn't to my liking but iono if you could give me some strong reasons I might consider it.

Edit: The only thing I've noticed so far is that Mac's have very long lasting batteries.

It's not better, per se.

The only benefit as I would recall is speed and reliability, but as you probably know, Windows is catching up fast, if not already or outright passing it.

Another is the boot camp feature, which allows you to run both OSes on the same machine.

Apple sells cheap to students, and I'm not sure about HP, Sony, Acer, Lenevo, or Dell

Yeah. I'm not a Mac fan as you can tell.

compaq is my personal preference. I've got a Presario CQ60. Works awesome on everything but certain video games.

Yeah I heard about the BootCamp, but I just don't see a point in having 2 OSs on one computer.

I have a HP and I had a Compaq. Compaq is not a bad company, but I've had a lot of issues with my Compaq computer ._.

Well...I have a Mac I use for the very purpose you want a laptop for, and I love it. It has at least 4 hours of battery life, which is nice when you take it from class to class to use for notes. The speed is a big plus, too. Also, they have a feature called Time Machine, which periodically automatically backs up your files, so if something DOES go wrong (not likely, the worst problem I've had in two years is a sticky key), you have your things backed up. And like Meister2192 said, they give discounts to college students.

...But that's just my two cents. I really like my Mac. But if you don't want one, then I think I would suggest Dell. I've never owned one, but I've heard very good things about them.

Yeah I looked up a few Mac tutorials and reviews on YouTube. Features and software isn't bad, but just the OS for some reason throws me off. Maybe its because I've been using Windows for over 7 years or something. I can adapt to new things easy but so far Macs have been tough. Also I saw the prices for these Mac's and their expensive. I haven't found anything on apple.com about student discounts.

If you go to college, I would buy one of the school's sponsored laptops (you order through the school's website, not the company's) because you get a very good price (much better than you can get on your own) and it's much easier to get it serviced should anything go wrong while you're at school.

I've personally been a fan of Toshiba laptops for a very long time. My first laptop was an ancient Toshiba 386 laptop, and it was very reliable. After that, all the Toshiba Satellites and Satellite Pros that I've used since the 486 era have been very reliable, and most importantly have withstood abuse a lot better than most other laptops I've used. Personally, I'd read up some reviews on some of the newer Toshiba lappies and see what you think. This is going to be your main computer while in college, so just remember what the most important things will be:

Reliability: You want something that's going to perform for you, and won't give you any shit.

Comfort: You want to feel comfortable as you type on it, minimizing wrist wear and such.

Keyboard: This is going to be what you will be typing things like essays on and such. Make sure that you give the keyboard a "test drive" before purchasing so that you know that your new machine will be a pleasure to type on, and not a burden.

Also some other things to consider is if the screen is easy on your eyes, or seems so... eyestrain can be a bitch. Depending on the size of your dorm, this laptop might just end up being your entertainment center too, so if you're going to be watching dvd's (and bluray if you pay enough), you'll be wanting to be sure that you can watch the screen for a good period of time. Remember, this laptop will be for work, but it will also be for play.

I hope that whatever you end up with, you will be very happy and satisfied with. A good laptop will be your best friend for a long time.

Wow thank you for your feedback thar. I've never used a Toshiba but I did hear their good. Also my current one, the HP, is pretty fragile tbh. Also the laptops that I am aware are at the BestBuy are some Dells, HPs, Sony's, Toshibas, Compaqs and Macs so I'll check them out in person irl and maybe report with something I like. BestBuy gives out shit cheap so it's not a bad place, and its like 3 minutes away. But yeah I'll consider a Toshiba :D
Edit: Damn I need to look for a anti-glare screen. I hate these glare screens >_>
