I wanted to bring this up after seeing some refences to countries in our world in LeafGreen, and refrences to animals in the same game.
Maybe this has been done many times, but I wanted to get input from fans who've been around longer.
My theory is, at one time Game Freak intended for Pokemon to be other creatures in the Pokemon world on top of animals. In Pokemon Adventures (manga) Red states that Pokemon are "strange creatures that inhabit caves and forests". This makes the reader assume it must be taken at face value. Also, Pikachu is referred to as an "electric mouse". This being said, there must be mice in the Pokemon world for Pikachu to be called an electric mouse.
There are two refrences to other countries in LeafGreen. The Arcanine Pokedex entry metions China, and Lt. Surge is the "Lightning American". Kanto is also a region of Japan, and if one looks at a map of the Kanto region, the Pokemon world's Kanto looks an awful lot like a specific spot of our Kanto. This leaves one to assume that early on, Pokemon was set in a world just like ours, except with Pokemon.
Now, Game Freak has created a more concrete world, but this creates inconsistancies with earlier games. Personally, I think Game Freak has stepped away from having "our world with Pokemon" kind of universe, and made a whole separate universe for Pokemon.
Just discuss, this is very complicated, and I wanted to get input. Has anything ever been said officially by Game Freak or Nintendo about this?
