Connection between our world and the Pokemon world? (theory)

I wanted to bring this up after seeing some refences to countries in our world in LeafGreen, and refrences to animals in the same game.
Maybe this has been done many times, but I wanted to get input from fans who've been around longer.

My theory is, at one time Game Freak intended for Pokemon to be other creatures in the Pokemon world on top of animals. In Pokemon Adventures (manga) Red states that Pokemon are "strange creatures that inhabit caves and forests". This makes the reader assume it must be taken at face value. Also, Pikachu is referred to as an "electric mouse". This being said, there must be mice in the Pokemon world for Pikachu to be called an electric mouse.

There are two refrences to other countries in LeafGreen. The Arcanine Pokedex entry metions China, and Lt. Surge is the "Lightning American". Kanto is also a region of Japan, and if one looks at a map of the Kanto region, the Pokemon world's Kanto looks an awful lot like a specific spot of our Kanto. This leaves one to assume that early on, Pokemon was set in a world just like ours, except with Pokemon.

Now, Game Freak has created a more concrete world, but this creates inconsistancies with earlier games. Personally, I think Game Freak has stepped away from having "our world with Pokemon" kind of universe, and made a whole separate universe for Pokemon.

Just discuss, this is very complicated, and I wanted to get input. Has anything ever been said officially by Game Freak or Nintendo about this?

there originally were birds and dogs in the anime but they slowly dropped off and were just replaced by Pidgeys and Poochyenas

Really, I never knew that. The anime had been around for a while bythe time I got into Pokemon.

I also remember there's an official pokemon comic or manga where Ash, Misty & Brock were walking, and a random dog was seen in the street.

it made sense at the time but they must've thought.....hang on a sec, shouldn't those birds be pokemon or why cant you catch a dog with a pokeball

You can actually catch other things aside from pokemons with a pokeball. Ash captured a rice ball in that "Mankey" episode, remember?

I remember when SSAnne sank, fish could be seen swimming through a window. And in the first episode, a pidgey was eating a worm.
This all stopped after Kanto maybe the writers wanted a different universe because the franchise has grown but some stuff has still been kept, Lt.Surge 'Lightning American'.

Fish were also seen in Misty's gym. A Pidgey was shown eating a worm.

Also, in R/G/B/Y/FR/LG South America is where they found the DNA of Mew.

I just think Game Freak kind of dropped the ball when it came to making up for these inconsistancies.

Like you said, I think they intended on making the Pokemon world overlap with the Earth we know, but they have drifted a bit from it. But, that isn't to say it still doesn't exist, just that Ash and co. don't reference or otherwise point it out.

In one episode I think they referenced Hollywood and I believe Paris. That isn't to say they don't exist (after all, every region so far has been based on a piece of Japan), just that the topic hasn't been brought up yet. And I guess your average "dog or cat" just isn't as popular or common, but still exist.

That's what I think at least.

Pokemon as a world isn't really all that concrete. It's perfectly vague enough to get away with any so-called inconsistencies here. Given how the system works, I don't think they ever have to be called to account for them.

Are there officially regular fish and such in the Pokemon world? Who knows? It's not like they're something that need to be shown when there are fish Pokemon to display. Is there an alternate U.S. in the Pokemon world from which Lt. Surge hales? Sure, probably. Will we ever end up seeing Pokemon's U.S. or even hear of it beyond Lt. Surge himself? Most likely not so much. It's all pretty darn hazy. But, y'know, nothing needs to be clear. All they have to do is make a vague reference and make a point of never elaborating on it.

"What do they eat in those burgers?"
"Regular old cows"
"Where are the cows?"
"We just don't show them."

Job well done!

I've always thought of it this way too. Especially when it comes to food. I never could really see them actually eating Miltanks and Tauros in burgers or steak, or fillet of Magikarp. I agree with the OP.

... Kentucky Fried Pidgey anyone?

The Pokemon world is our world just with Pokemon in it.

Being an ametuer writer, stiff like this bugs me. I think it would be interesting to see an alternate U.S. somewhere in the Pokemon media. But I think they're Miltank burgers.

No there weren't, they were never shown, unlike random fish and worms.

There was a dog in ONE promotional picture, and that was that.
Yes, and a mongoose and fish in the anime:

Also, Ash in a cow costume. There must be cows if he dresses like one:

I remember the SS Anne episode and even when I was younger, I wondered why there were real fish, it's been so long, that I just thought they were Remoraid but I guess not. With all of the inconsistencies, I just use a suspension of disbelief when I'm playing, or else it would bug me to no end. With food and all, if they milk Miltank, why can't they eat them? And the Far'fetchd was talked about as being a delicacy.

As far as countries go, if in theory there were no inconsistencies, then one could say like coolkatkim22, it's just our world with pokemon laid over it, but now in later generations, I would lean more toward a totally separate world. Pokemon, to me, just has to be taken with a grain of salt, it's not perfect but it is fun. A small bit of suspension of disbelief must be used when discussing the games but it is enjoyable to theorize.
