Welcome to Contest-of-the-Week! Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that ORAS has now been released (almost) worldwide! To celebrate we'll be looking at the incredibly powerful new forms of the legendary weather trio.

Every week, we'll still be looking at a few of the many Pokémon you'll meet along your journey through the Hoenn region, and asking for your opinions on them and how they stack up next to their counterparts or rival Pokemon looking to fill the same spot on your team.

The weather trio were already dangerous legendaries to begin with, but in ORAS they can reach even greater levels of power with Groudon and Kyogre's Primal forms and Rayquaza's Mega evolution. In addition the games introduce new signature moves for the trio; Groudon's Precipice Blades, Kyogre's Origin Pulse and Rayquaza's Dragon Ascent.

Primal Groudon not only gains a massive boost it's offensive and defensive stats stats, but also gains the Fire type to capitalise on its self generated sun even more. The added weakness to water is vaporised thanks to its Desolate Land ability, which summons sunlight so intense that it not only cannot be dispelled, but also causes Water type moves to fail.

Primal Kyogre also gains a similar stat boost to Groudon, and likewise its Primordial Sea summons heavy rain that cannot be overwritten. This means its new Origin Pulse attack will always hit extremely hard, to say nothing of its feared Water Spout.

Mega Rayquaza gains a significant increase to its offensive stats and speed, letting it hit hard and fast on both sides of the offensive spectrum. It's Delta Stream ability introduces a new weather condition unique to Rayquaza, that nullifies all other weathers and cancels out the weaknesses of Flying types. So now it'll take much more than just an Ice Beam to put down Mega Rayquaza

Which of these massively powerful legendaries do you like best, and why?

-Which has the best design?
-Which has the best ability?
-Which has the best signature move?
-Which is most useful in the competitive environment?
-Which would win in a three way showdown between them?

Let the contest begin!

I don't have ORAS yet so I can't say too much yet.

However Groudon has always been my favorite of the 3, plus he gains one of my favorite typings and the ability to not be hurt by water attacks. Even though the others have useful abilities and such as well, Groudon is still the best!

Which has the best design?
My choice is Mega Rayquaza. Because Primal Groudon & Primal Kyogre just glow with power which is cool and all but superficially Mega Rayquaza is better.

Which has the best ability?
Primal Groudon since it makes Water Type moves fail but Mega Rayquaza's is good but not as good as Primal Groudon's Desolate Land.

Which has the best signature move?
I haven't played Omega Ruby (or Alpha Sapphire) but my guess would be Mega Rayquaza's move since it's named Dragon Ascent (and Dragon Type moves are considered overpowered in my book).

Which is more useful in the competitive environment?
Primal Groudon, because of it's new ability, it has an advantage over Water Types.

Which would win in a three way showdown between them?
Mega Rayquaza

Which has the best design?
Just like his regular form, Groudon destroys the other 2 in terms of design. Kyogre is okay and Rayquaza just looks awful.

Which has the best ability?
Again Groudon. His double weakness is null and void and can't be changed no matter what. That's awesome.

Which has the best signature move?
They all look pretty cool to me. but I guess Rayquaza's looks the best.

Which would win in a three way showdown between them?
I guess Rayquaza because he's supposed to be the leader among all of them and his types give him immunities and resistances to Groudon and Kyogre's types.

I obviously vote for Primal Groudon:)

Which has the best design?
I like Mega Rayquaza the best... In term of design of legendary Pokemon, Rayquaza and Darkrai are always my favorite. And the mega form is look more awesome.

Which has the best ability?
Groudon. Only Groudon that have ability to create weather that against his weakness, Delta Stream make move that usually super effective to flying type attack normal, but still damages *and kinda useless since Rayquaza already damaged normally against electric, only rock type is reduces but still damaged*
Kyogre's ability null fire attack, but it normally resistant to fire attack so not as good as Desolate Land

Which has the best signature move?
Rayquaza's Dragon Ascent just too awesome.

Which is more useful in the competitive environment?
I think Gourdon, is overall strongest, his 'weakness' in competitive nature is only Levitate Pokemon, but Levitate Pokemon commonly use in competitive nature so still have risk, *but it also fire type so if it keep the Fire type move still can STAB pretty well*. Kyougre is more stable than all, imo only need to look out for Electric and Flying type, with some strategy and it can be good choice. Rayquaza is tricky, it's really strong but fairy and dragon type have lots of strong moves and it weak agaist them.. and it also need to watch out for ice move..

Which would win in a three way showdown between them?
Rayquaza. It's immune to Ground, resistant to Fire and Water.

So Rayquaza...

-Which has the best design?
Primal Kyogre. It looks beautiful, and I love the glowing blue.

-Which has the best ability?
Primal Groudon. It completely shuts down its biggest threat, Water-type attacks. Completely. Definitely useful for survival, and is a huge advantage considering Primal Groudon's type.

-Which has the best signature move?
Mega Rayquaza. So intense.

-Which is most useful in the competitive environment?
Primal Groudon. It boosts Fire power, and shuts down Water threats. Not only is it useful in Singles, but I can see it in Doubles and Triples, paired with Fire and Grass types that have access to abilities/moves that takes advantage of Primal Groudon's ability.

-Which would win in a three way showdown between them?
Mega Rayquaza, I guess.

So my choice goes to Primal Groudon primarily for its ability

Which has the best design?
Groudon, hands down.

-Which has the best ability?
Once again, Groudon. The ability to render water moves useless? Amazing.

-Which has the best signature move?
Kyogre. Something about Origin Pulse is really appealing to me.

Which is most useful in the competitive environment?
Groudon, primarily because it completely ignores its biggest threat (Water).

Which would win in a three way showdown between them?
Kyogre. I'm biased on this one since I have Alpha Sapphire, but it's a beast.

Votin' for Groudon.

Rayquaza has always been a personal favorite, so I am going with Mega Rayquaza, no questions asked.

Which one has the best design?
Mega Rayquaza. I looks so majestic, as if it has become the god of the cosmos.

Which has the best ability?
Primal Groudon, easily. It's ability nerfs Water. Total, utterly, and brutally. What would be a catastrophic weakness is completely null and void the moment that lumbering behemoth enters the playing field. Plus nerfing Water is A-OK in my books, as Water is too powerful.

Which has the best signature move?
Rayquaza, hands down. That Dragon's Descent is totally awesome and epic, yet majestic and graceful.

Which is most useful in the competitive environment?
Groudon, easily. Not only does it nerf Water just by stepping onto the field, but any moves that benefit from sunlight (Solar Beam, Synthesis, all Fire moves, etc) gain a huge advantage without any problems.

Which would win in a three way showdown between them?
Rayquaza. It is the leader of the trio, after all. It's presence alone is enough to shut both down at the same time (as Emerald demonstrated), but it has an advantage against all three of them as well. Immune to Ground moves, resistant to Water and Fire, and even if Kyogre were to use an Ice attack (Ice Beam, for example), Mega Rayquaza's ability weakens it to just a moderate threat at best. So Rayquaza wins in any clash of these titans.

My vote goes to Mega Rayquaza.

-Which has the best design? mega rayray
-Which has the best ability? primal groudon, powers up its fire STAB while eliminating its water weakness
-Which has the best signature move? mega rayray
-Which is most useful in the competitive environment? the one with its own tier
-Which would win in a three way showdown between them?
the one with its own tier

Rayquaza is the most visually appealing to me. All three of them have nice abilities that have their pros and their cons. Can't say much about signature moves since I've only seen Groudon's Precipce Blades. n_n

Ah, the new and improved Weather Trio. Design obviously goes to Mega Rayquaza, who probably has the absolute best Mega Evolution design of them all. He's like some beautiful Chinese dragon. While his ability is pretty good, Primal Groudon's, though, is far more useful to him getting rid of that 4X weakness to water.

The best signature move? I'm gonna say Dragon Ascent. It's like the ORAS version of XY's Brave Bird, in that it's the best move animation in the game.

Competitively, Mega Rayquaza is obviously the better of the three. A Mega that can hold an item is something people only dream of and for it to be a monster like Rayquaza that also now has an ability to completely rid him of some of his weaknesses just makes him an absolute beast. Considering he was banned from the banned tier under Smogon rules, there's really no question.

Now which would win in a three way showdown? Without a doubt Mega Rayquaza. Immune to Ground, resists Fire, no longer weak to anything Rock Primal Groudon might want to throw at him. Resists Water, Electricity, and now only regularly weak to any Ice moves Primal Kyogre might try to use. And he's not limited with an item? Mega Rayquaza for sure.

-Which has the best design? Mega Rayquaza, for sure.
-Which has the best ability? Primal Groudon.
-Which has the best signature move? Mega Rayquaza.
-Which is most useful in the competitive environment? Either Mega Rayquaza or Primal Groudon.
-Which would win in a three way showdown between them? Depends on the IVs, but if you mean the anime, Mega Rayquaza.

Rayquaza (or shiny Mega) takes design: gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous.

384-m.png

Rayquaza also takes ability and "showdown" (yerp). On that note, it'd make sense if Primordial Sea nullified Ground-type moves instead of Fire-type moves.

Raqyquaza would take "competitive environment" as well, would it of course not take the actual competitive environment to the degree it would if still allowed in it.

The "competitive environment" then falls to Groudon.

The best move could be either Groudon's or Kyogre's. I'm tempted to say it's Groudon's Precipice Blades though, if only because odd partner Cherrim likes that move much better than Earthquake. (Earthquake may be easier to build around, but Surf can actually be utilized.)

Best design: Mega Rayquaza. If we were looking at default, it would be Kyogre by a landslide, but the only one that really deviates from its original form is Ray.

Best ability: Primal Groudon. Immunity to Water is all my (and everyone else's) yes.

Best signature move: MR. Dragon Ascent is too cool. However, I love all the signature moves.

Most useful competitively: Mega Rayquaza. In the Smogon community, it got its own tier.

In a match: Rayquaza. Even if Delta Stream cancels out Groudon's new Drought (I forget what it's called, sorry), causing Groudon to instantly lose by both's Water type moves, Kyogre's Ice Beam is relatively useless with Delta Stream. Rayquaza then proceeds to overwhelm MK.

Mega Rayquaza wins, but I accidentally voted MK... heh heh...

Sorry, had to do that. Look closely and you'll see it. yeah, intentional.

I have to go with Groudon here. I've always loved its design and the Primal form looks absolutely amazing. And seeing as how Devastar nearly killed my team three times over with Precipice Blades, I've got to give it to him.

Rayquaza is a close second, however.

I have to go with my main man Kyogre. I really love the Alpha theme and its Primal form really made it stand out amongst all the other water types.

Best design? Mega Rayquaza.

Best Ability? Primal Groudon.

Best Signature Move? Origin Pulse. Sounds so mystical.

Best Competitively? Mega Rayquaza. No doubt.

Who would win? Mega Rayqaza, of course...

Best Design- I like all three of them, but Mega Rayquaza would probably have to be the best.
Best Ability- Desolate Land is the best in-battle, but Primordial Sea sounds the coolest to me.
Best Signature Move- Dragon Ascent is my favorite move in the entire franchise. You can really feel the impact when it hits.
Best Competitively- Mega Rayquaza, because it can hold boosting items like a Life Orb, effectively giving it a BST of 800. This also pretty much makes it the most powerful Pokémon in existence, to the point it was banned from Ubers, which has seen the likes of EKiller Arceus, Geomancy-Power Herb Xerneas, and Choice Specs Kyogre.
Who would win in a fight?- Mega Rayquaza again. It can OHKO Groudon with Draco Meteor or Surf, and do the same to Kyogre with STAB Outrage or Dragon Ascent.
Overall, Rayquaza is my favorite, with Primal Groudon being in second.
