Here you can discuss about Contests and Showcases.
For me, Contests in the anime never really got to me as much. When Contests were relevant back then in Hoenn and Sinnoh, I questioned why battles were even added into Contests (probably to make it less boring for kids), and never really got that point system. It sometimes seemed like it was there for how much they hit the other guy, not because it was "performed beautifully". I mean, I did get how Coordinators used each others attacks against them, but is that really different than in a Gym match? In the end the Coordinator would still need to win a battle to get the ribbon anyway. That's really no different than a Gym battle to me.
Now about the rivals for the main girls, Drew and Harley were interesting enough, but Zoey, Kenny, Nando, and Ursala were pretty boring. Ursala lost every battle, Zoey won them all, I don't think Nando appeared often, and Kenny was meh.
I might have been too harsh on Showcases, which I think everyone would agree were never really properly developed, but I can't really say I enjoyed them much. I mean, the concept seems nice, but the writers were clearly just winging it to give Serena something to do (despite Serena and Bonnie living in the Kalos region, they've never heard of a competition for becoming the Kalos Queen? Come on). Plus the way they've handled the rivals was just shit poor. Shauna's suppose to be the main rival but you could just as well give that title to Miette or even Nini, whose Pokemon sadly had more interactions with Serena's with just Smoochum flirting with Pancham for five seconds.
Amelia would have been great as a difficult rival for Serena like how Ursala/Zoey (only Zoey in the "difficult" case) was to Dawn, only less stupid. Having Ursala lose all the time and making Zoey win all the time against Dawn wasn't really great to me. Does it make sense for Zoey to lose to May who then loses against Dawn? I also felt Miette's sudden interest with Showcases was random too, which I bet was probably the reason why they skipped her Freestyle Performance the first time. I bet they'll do it again in the Master Class by making it into a montage with the other un-notable Performers.
Lastly, I also don't get why people call it "waifu wars" or whatever was said, isn't that sexist? All they did was just make fattening patisseries for two themes (annoyingly), not home cooked meals for their husbands. I think I might have overreacted before, nowadays I personally don't give a crap anymore about whether the lead female's goal is gender-neutral or not.
I don't see why people are comparing Contests with Showcases because they have battle rounds in them. Are they saying Showcases should have contained battle rounds too? People would have just complained about it copying the anime version of Contests and annoyingly question why it wasn't brought back instead for the umpteenth time. For me, just seeing some Performers having battles outside the competition would have been enough like "Ariana" vs Serena (which sadly wasn't resolved properly), or the double battle in the dance party event (the evolution was great, but that battle was kinda lame though). I've changed my mind about battles appearing in the Master Class too, it would be really forced.
That's how I feel about 'em. What about you?
