I've never been much in to contests, but I decided the other night to, out of sheer boredom, play dress up with one of my baby Pokemon. When I saw that moustache on my Squirtle, I knew what I had to do.
So someone explain contests to me.

Maybe you should ask in that all encompassing "ask random questions" thread or whatever.

I have NO IDEA what contests do. I entered one twice, cause I lost a the first time. You win ribbons for your pokemon, but I could not figure out what ribbons do. They didn't seem to affect the stats of my pokemon.

You also feed your pokemon poffins and that helps you out in the first part of the contest, the beauty part. You feed it a couple poffins and it doesn't matter too much if you screw up the rest of the contest.

The dance stage is HARD and the acting stage has a bunch of random rules I don't understand.

I still really want to know if ribbons even do anything...

Read this.

It's nice to see more people become interested in Contests.

The best bit of advice I have for you is to utilize amity square, and get lots of Contest items. If you don't place 1 or 2nd in the dress stage, it's over for you.

Warning though, the Master rank post- E4 is difficult as fuck, Jasmine and Fatina are competators.

Even before the E4 it's hard: your mom shows up.

Get some friends and some of the awesome Berries (numbers above 52) and make some Poffin. Or in Pt, buy some. Either way, you wanna max out contest stats in at least one aspect. Then you can get a scarf from the Scarf Guy in Pastoria, which, when held, will boost your appeal points even more.

Rhythm is key in the dance stage, but it's pretty easy. Just get the hang of the songs.

Moves don't matter too much, but they do help. Trust me, I beat two Master Rank contests with the same Pokémon, had only one move of the types I was in. Just get lucky with the crowd's excitement and you're good.

Ok, so I read through the entire faq and no where did it say what contests actually do to your pokemon. So I guess it's just for collecting ribbons?

Um yeah. What were you expecting?

EDIT: I suppose a biproduct of contest is what leads to the evolution of Feebas.

I was expecting it had some other purpose. It should because most trainers wouldn't want to do it just for the ribbons. Maybe they'll develop that in subsequent Pokemon games. Like the more ribbons, the more EVs it earns in certain categories or something like that... I'd take contests more seriously then.

super contests are really boring. Why couldn't they keep the old contests, or have them both?
