Hi everyone! This is the new controversial Pokémon anime opinions thread that we decided to proceed with. This is the safe space for you to share your hot takes related to the Pokémon anime manga.

Given the nature of the thread, the opinions are supposed to be controversial. So we expect all the users to respect the unpopular opinions (in align with the forum rules) shared here, and contribute to the discussions with good manners.

So the bottom line is: Let the thread serve its true purpose, allow the controversial opinions to stand out, and be respectful when you are expressing your thoughts and opinions. Do not come with the popular opinion counter argument while engaging with these posts.

In order to keep the thread in order, we will be using a strike system for repeat offenses:

1 StrikeMod PM
2 StrikesPoints Infraction
3 Strikes1 Month Thread Ban
Final StrikePermanent Thread Ban

Enjoy!

The timeskip half of Horizons isn't as good as the pre-timeskip half was. It's actually disappointing to me since I was really excited for the idea at first but I've already gone through why I'm not into it much in a different thread so I won't repeat myself again.

Leon is still a stronger trainer than Ash post JN. Leon handicapped himself by allowing Ash to use all of his gimmicks in their battle at the Masters 8 tournament but even then both trainers still came down to their last pokémon. So this in no way makes Ash look stronger but weaker.

Paul is still a better all-around trainer than Ash post JN. Ash didn't evolve all of his pokemon while Paul did, Ash also doesn’t rotate his pokemon as often or plan ahead for battles using effective strategies the way Paul does either.

Pokespe B2W2's okay. First half is kinda bad, I hate how Whitley's treated. Second half is pretty good, but not enough to make the arc any better than like, a 6/10 if I'm being generous. I can't imagine waiting years for an arc of this quality to finish.
I feel bad for Black and White fans specifically waiting for Black to come back.
It's the only Pokespe arc I don't like.

As for an anime opinion, I actually like the timeskip episodes quite a bit!
Mega Voltage was solid and I'm currently four episodes behind on Rising Again, but Rising Again is genuinely really good!
The space pivot is kinda weird and doesn't fully make sense, but otherwise I don't really have any problems with Rising Again.

Hoping this thread will have more Pokespe opinions, love that manga more than words can describe. If you haven't read it, please don't let my critiques of B2W2 discourage you from reading the manga. The whole thing is worth reading, even that arc.
Heck, it's only a hot take because it's a divisive arc! Some people like the arc and some people even like it's main characters! Liking Blake, I kinda understand, I like Emerald and he's an unpopular character so I relate a bit.

Speaking of Emerald, the character and arc are peak. His backstory is genuinely one of the best in Pokemon and that's all I'll say on the matter because you really should just read the manga for yourself :)

I like Ash, not enough for me to be okay with him being the main character for over 1000 episodes though.
If you try to watch through the whole show, it's super easy to get sick of him. But I did take a break and now I don't really feel any Ash fatigue anymore.
Still wish the anime took the Pokespe approach and had a new MC each arc.
I guess they kept Ash around for so long, because that costs money (character design, voice acting) and maybe merchandising? But also you'd have more merch if you changed main characters more and Ash never got that much merch. I mean, he's on a lot of merch but there's not much Ash-only merch like action figures or plushies

The only reason why the Pokémon are not extremely hungry after having laqurium used on them, is the fact that in the Pokémon world the law of mass conservation does not work. Send post
This is not controversial at all, indeed pokemon evolution at a first glance proves there no conservation of anything.

Physics YouTuber proving this on numbers:

Since people are sharing their Adventures hot takes:
- I don't care for any of the het ships in Adventures. My favorite ships are NamelessShipping, PreciousMetalShipping and AbsurdistShipping.

- People saying that Adventures is ''dark'' or ''edgy'' and talking about the Arbok scene doesn't annoy me that much. I've heard much more annoying things.

- I don't want Adventures to be popular because I don't want the fanbase to become more toxic.

- Adventures is better than the anime not because it's ''darker'' and ''maturer'', it's better because it switches protagonists for every arc, it's more accurate to the games and it's less focused on marketing.

- I don't get the appeal of MangaPokeShipping and MoonLilyShipping.

- My least favorite chapter is the Sun and Moon chapter. Everything about it sucked, besides for the portrayals of the Aether Family.

- Red is incredibly bland and generic.

- I like Emerald and find him hilarious. As much as I would have liked for Wally to have been the third Hoenn Pokedex Holder as I like it when they have Pokédex Holders that are based on rivals, I'm not mad about it as Sapphire was technically based on rival May.

- Blake is my favorite character and the B2W2 arc is my favorite arc.

- I don't like Yellow and she is one of my least favorite characters, along with Whitley and Crystal.

- I liked the XY arc.

- The RBY and GSC (at least GSC) arcs are overrated and I don't like any of the older chapters.

- The old artstyle is ugly.

We've allowed opinions to be shared about what one feels groups of people seem to largely think about a matter or character (Ex. "I think a lot of people dislike Goh/Goh gets too much hate for reasons I don't agree with and this is why..."). Just as long as you refrain from attacking, insulting, or baiting said fandoms and conduct yourself respectfully, it should be permissible (unless we as a staff decide and notify otherwise).

Nice to see another Emerald fan :D

I like the Unova League! The Trip battle sucks but otherwise I found it fun.
The Cameron battle especially had some great animation!
Speaking of great animation, I like the Ambipom ping-pong episode for the same reason lol

Ash using all his gimmicks against Leon was not only great, but it also made sense given the context of the narrative. In Journeys Ash was working toward building up his team with Mega Evolution for Lucario, Gmax for Gengar, and the Z-move was from Alola. Not only did Leon request this because he wanted to face Ash at his strongest, but also the way the battle was written neither the Mega or Z-move gave Ash much of an advantage. Lucario would have performed pretty much the same in base stage (it would have beaten Rime and lost to Dragapult the same way, the only thing the Mega did was let Lucario last slightly longer against Dragapult but it lost that fight anyway). And the Z-move deflected an attack and didn't cause any damage to Charizard so it was acceptable.

Lastly Leon also gets a second Gmax later, (even if he kinda wastes it), so it was really 2 gimmicks against 4. That being said none of Leon's other pokemon have Mega evolutions, and seemingly none of the champions have ever been to Alola (which is why none of them used Z-moves in general), so i think it's fine.

We know Leon is still one of the strongest trainers in the anime, and Ash barely scraping by a win was the most believeable way to do it. Every single one of Leon's pokemon proved to be aces instead of just Charizard, so it never seemed like Ash had it easy.

Thank you, this is exactly what I need:

I don't like when people judge battles and characters in Horizons anime by winrate alone. I think that tallying how many times did Liko (Roy, Dot...) win or lose or if one character gets more wins than other shows misunderstanding of the role battles play in this series.

Unlike Ash's story Horizons isn't and never was about the badge gym crawl and the quest to be a champion. It's about a grand adventure and personal journeys and also some world-saving. Battling is one more avenue to show personal growth and showcase relative power of the characters in this given moment and not test their pokemon training prowess or chances (or lack thereof) of winning against the next big gym leader. Whether someone won or lost should be only viewed through the lens of the plot - how does the battle result resolve the current situation and/or how does it underline a characters' current trajectory. Sometimes a win/loss (especially loss) is basically a plot device to push the plot in a direction desired by the writers and does not have anything to do with the trainers' skill or power.

Naturally this may lead (and sometimes does) to absurd or "deus ex machina" results and this should be critiqued as a certain dissonnance - but not the fact of a win/loss itself or how many times it happened.

Horizons battles are not tournament battles, they are aesthetised dialogues.

People dog in the Kanto League, but Ash vs Jeanette was a cool battle that used an unconventional weak pokemon to show that there's more to battling than meets the eye.
Gotta agree, Bellsprout was awesome and I love how Muk won
