converting .avi to quicktime?

I recently bought an iPod Video, and I've known that quicktime is unable to play avi's so I was wondering how to convert them? I downloaded that software SUPER (maybe some of you have it?), however, once it is done converting, it is still an .avi movie despite it saying it can open in quicktime (which, of course, it cannot).

Any suggestions? And I have a Windows operating system, btw.

If the file sizes are dramatically different, try manually changing the file extension from .avi to .mov - I've had that problem a few times with SUPER, where it leaves the extension the same. Or, try re-encoding it but look carefully at the extension to use when saving the file.
 
I'm not sure how to re-encode it . . all I know is that I put it into SUPER and have the "output" set to "mov" but when it comes out, the extension is still .avi and when I attempt to open it in quicktime I get an error message . . is there some missing codecs perhaps? I really just want to make a referance video of all of my videos so the file is smaller and I can have it on my iPod.
 
I have a mac, which is quick-time-centric, therefore I use a freeware programme called Divx Doctor II to convert my AVIs into MOV format. It's drag-and-drop, which is nice, since it's so easy. Unless the AVI is corrupted, it seems to work pretty consistantly.

uhh yeah I'm already watching AG181 on iTunes right now hahaha
