Could Barry be Lucas's rival?

Kenny is obviously Dawn's rival. Dawn has a Piplup, Barry had a Piplup, and Kenny had a Piplup.

Is it possible that they meant that Lucas is Pearl Barry's rival? Or did they just want to show off the Sinnoh mascot some more?
 
If by "Sinnoh Mascot" you mean Piplup, well... it's clear that Dawn's Piplup isn't going to evolve anytime soon. So they had to find a way to show off it's other forms.

But don't you think that if they had meant for Barry to be Lucas's rival, that they might have made some hint about them knowing each other by now?

But hey, maybe Lucas will turn up at the Sinnoh League (though I doubt it).
 
Uh, no, he's Satoshi's other rival. Are you even watching the show, here?
 
Well, don't expect to see Lucas anytime soon. It seems that the male players only get lame cameos in movies.
 
Jimmy will probably see this fate too (or maybe even be replaced by Hiro/Hibiki alltogether) if a Johto based movie arrives >_>
