A thought occurred to me as I was reminded of the original series episode with the Ruins of Pokémopolis. The people of Pokémopolis had an ancient giant Alakazam and an ancient giant Gengar seal up in ancient artifacts. Those two Pokémon species obtained Mega Evolutions in XY, right? So, what I was wondering is if these two abominations of Pokémon could also hold the potential for Mega Evolution. I understand that the writers could not have known that Mega Evolution was going to eventually be a thing, so they didn't have that in mind when creating the episode. However, the two species in general can both Mega-Evolve, which made me question whether or not the Pokémopolis giants could also be able to obtain that kind of boost.

So, do you think these guys could have the potential to Mega-Evolve? If they could, then what would be the consequences of giving a boost to these already powerful titans of Pokémopolis? Discuss!

Gengar and Alakazam are counterparts, due to evolution methods and type efectiveness, as shown in the Sabrina arc.

I think the anime follows the game canon in the fact that megastones are only found in certain caves, and key stones...Well, nobody knows where key stones come from, but probably were passed from generation to generation and are a symbol of greatness, I don't see ancient civilizations gaining access to both.

Also, the pokemopolis artifacts look more ancient than the egyptian-like art of MegaLucario, who is said to be first Megaevolution.

It would be cool if the anime would do something like that with megaevolution anyway.

Ancient civilizations aside, I think it'd be more like someone from today gaining access to these two Pokémon and using Mega Evolution on them. Now that could be scary. Of course, it'll most likely never happen, since almost everything from the first few seasons is ancient history to TPTB and not likely to ever be revisited. *cough*GSBall*cough*

They're an Alakazam and Gengar. Of course they're capable of Megavolution. In fact that's probably how they destroyed Pokémopolis in the past, if I had to guess. But they'll never Megavolve in the future. They're trapped for sure in those things. And then there's the Jigglypuff... I'm calling Megalytuff tbh

^This is exactly where I'm getting at. I'm also well aware of the fact that it was only a one-time thing for that episode. It was just a hypothetical thought that popped into my head.

I agree with you in fact that them being trapped means they'll never Mega-Evolve in the future, but the part that I bolded does bring some interesting implications. The artifacts that Giant Alakazam and Gengar are likely an ancient equivalent to Poké Balls, which likely means that at some point, they must have had some sort of master, maybe even two different ones. My take is that the reason they're fighting is due to them both killing off each other's masters by accident, and while they were Mega-Evolved, they went to any lengths possible to avenge their master's death, eventually leading to the extinction of the Pokémopolis civilization. after being sealed away by someone to keep the world being destroyed, Gengar's and Alakazam's actions in that one episode shows that they still hate each other's guts, and they will do anything to ensure that the one is dead, even if all other life is exterminated in the process.

Ah "Ancient Puzzle of Pokemopolis!". Good times when pokemon was still young, fresh, with writers really not hesitating to come up with all kind of creative, meaningful storyines from their own workshop.

Giant Alakazam and Giant Gengar are among largest pokemon ever showed in pokemon anime. Aside from them only other super big pokemon were Tentacruel mutant wrecking Porta Vista town, that mysterious Dragonite at lighthouse and if im not mistaken giant Claydol when giant sealed pokeball was ruptured.

Im not sure if Pokemopolis pokemon would have ability to mega evolve. Especially in already 10 times at least bigger size than normal coming of as incredibly powerful.

But since whole idea of mega evolution still isnt fully explored with there existing lot of mysteries and open questions. Mega evolution according to games and anime predate from ancient times with Lucario being first pokemon ever to unlock such huge power.

Considering how Pokemopolis ruins were town built in ancient times filled with all kind of occult artifacts , symbols, hyerogliphs and strangely shaped objects which turned out to be pokeballs., Like that dark orb or strangely marked spoon and object with slots.

Followed with revelation of Alakazam and Gengar being capable of transforming.

Maybe possibility of their counterparts in giant form mega evolving is there assuming how big enough mega stone and key items to initialize process of mega evolution exist.

However consequences in this two pokemon reaching such level of power and strength would likely be devastating for whole planet and life people in pokemon world know of. In case they wouldnt be very quickly stopped.

Already in their regular form i remember giants like Alakazam and Gengar were completely unstoppable with strange dark aura and bad weather full of lightnings leaning over Pokemopils ruins and spreading like apocalypse was coming. Gengar started absorbing everything which came on its way disappearing in darkness of its body. While Alakazam attacks(presumably psy beam)whenever hit ground turned things into giant shaped stone with weird markings on it.

This pokemon were so much overpowered and huge that i recall even Brock Onix sent in desperate attempt to slow them down looked like dwarf. Jigglypuff song didnt helped either because of their size.
With archeologist from that episode named Eve talking about prophecy of this two pokemon once they arise threatening to destroy whole world(they possibly destroyed Pokemopolis too).

Only solution came in form of giant Jigglypuff which put this oversized pokenmon to sleep being countermeasure.

However since Jigglypuff isnt known to have mega evolved form, even giant Jigglypuff wont have effect if Alakazam and Gengar in such form reached their mega evolved size.

Gaining so much speed, resistance and strength that i dont think even strongest legendary pokemon in world could stop them.

I admit it would be very cool if writers revisited Pokemopolis giants and used them to promote mega evolutions of this two species that way. Imagine whole storyline created out of it awakening this menace and evil once again breaking them free from sealed objects through Rocket or some other villain organization activities experimenting mega evolution or trying to produce artificial mega and key stone in giant size. All with attempt to unlock full strength and hidden abilities of this two pokemon to achieve their schemes. Only to witness their plans backfiring on them(experiment gone wrong) not being able to control mega evolved giant Gengar and Alakazam going on rampage and destruction of everything set infront of them.

Forcing Ash, his Kalos friends and older traveling companions like Misty, May, Brock, Tracey etc coming to help in stopping this two pokemon. Searching for mega stones to mega evolve their pokemon(promoting mega Gyarados, Venusaur, Steelix, Scizor etc that way). Establishing closer bond with their pokemon than ever before bringing their true strength and potential on surface. Simultaneously becoming stronger trainers and advancing their dreams of becoming top coordinastor, water master etc.

And participating in epic, groundbreaking battle to save world and find way to stop them(maybe original Mewtwo in X mega form coming to rescue).

Ok something like that wont happen because writers arent enough smart to capitalize on such possibilities and ideas. But it would be really interesting way nonetheless and very creative one in my opinion in promoting mega evolutions of Alakazam and Gengar through incorporation of ancient civilizations and secret powers inherent to them. In this case Pokemopolis giants.

@pokemon fan 132; I like your idea for the plot involving Giant Mega Alakazam and Giant Mega Gengar. That would surely be an awesome way to advertise the Mega. Unfortunately, not only are the writers not clever enough to think of this, but since they like to keep out references to the past so Ash doesn't do any backtracking, they might use Alan for this instead. After all, he IS the Mega Evolution guy.

I know, its sad how little writers and production staff care about creative and weived with actual depth storytelling. Past regions Ash traveled through, his older traveling friends who get replaced with unfinished stories, dreams never getting update and sequel(once replaced, good as dead). Or maintain previous collected experience, plotlines introduced in previous generation and references to Ash history treating anime as consistent story filled with continuity.

Because of that fact alone chances of them ever revisiting Pokemopolis or any of those great storylines they introduced and could be used as vectors to introduce new features and build future will be probably skipped over. Like promotion of mega evolved Alakazam and Gengar through ancient giants.

Passing of as throwaway few seconds montage showing Alakazam and Gengart mega forms without any action and justice done to them in those mega evolution side specials. I would like to be proven wrong but knowing pokemo staff way of processing things and wrongly set priorioties chances are more against rather than for it.

But since im optimistic by nature i always hope for best, but keep expectations low.

Last time I checked, this thread was about whether or not the Giants could be capable of Mega Evolution, not to complain about the writers or the anime. Stop it and get back on topic now.

Theoretically the Pokémon (except Bigglypuff) can Mega Evolve, but I doubt the ancient society could make the process work.

The society appeared to fear the Pokemon and sealed them inside their prototype storage devices. Without a strong connection between the Pokemonopolis people and the giant Pokemon, Mega Evolution would have been impossible. None of the Pokemon appeared to have a trainer, either.

But in the miraculous event that Pokemonopolis had access to these Mega Giant Pokemon, it is possible that any of Pokemonopolis' enemies would have been eliminated in the process. But there are too many unknown factors that could come into play; for example, what if civilizations having giant Pokemon were the norm and not the exception? Wouldn't the world have been in peril if all of the ancient societies during Pokemonopolis' time could Mega Evolve their gigantic Pokemon?

I will suggest something else pretty crazy to keep the discussion alive. (I have to state that I don't know much about megaevolutions, so if I say something wrong, help me improve my theory!)

I'll say that these two pokemon wouldn't be able to megaevolve.
Back in the times when Pokemopolis civilization thrived, these huge pokemon weren't something strange. In fact, "normal" pokemon were like them, able to use all of their power, and the ones we call "normal" were the "malfunctioning" that due to some unknown reasons were much weaker and smaller (and didn't have those strange marks).
People used to use (yeah!) both of these kinds of pokemon for different purposes. When Pokemopolis was destroyed by the huge pokemon, people realized that it was too dangerous having them around and decided to kill them or trap them in objects like we saw on that episode.
So the only the "weak" pokemon survived. Megastones are some sort of artifacts that were made years after by those who wanted to unlock the real power of pokemon. Their tries were partially successful since some that power could be retrieved, but most of the megastones were destroyed of fear of the Pokemopolis incident happening again. Only few were hidden well enough in order not be found.

Ok, this theory DO have some flaws like "why does the pokemon appearance change when megaevolving?", or "why there are two megaevolution for one pokemon?", but I think you can help sort thing out :)

Sorry, I couldn't resist (no offense Ampharos King)
...Pokemonopolis...

After watching Mega EVolution act 2 im now even more convinced how there exist ways to get around lack of close and full of mutual understanding bond between trainer and pokemon to initialize process of mega evolution. With several wild pokemon appearing in mega evolved forms judging by future previews, ORAS promotional video, but coverage on Alain journey as well. Such as mega Slowbro, Salamence, Swampert, Rayquaza. Due to possibly being exposed to radiation of pillars, megalith centered in center of island probably hiding secrets behind mega evolution which werent enough explored.

There was also isolated case of new Mewtwo transforming in mega Y form without any artifacts or built bond with human as well, shedding whole new mystery to mega evolution never being truly cleared out.

So in theory Alakazam and Gengar giants from Pokemopolis could have evolved even without human presence if exposed to enough big radiation of items which trigger process of changing their dna and physical structure reaching whole new shape and level of power.

But than again they are already so much huge and powerful even in regular form that very few even mega evolved pokemon could parry them. With ancient hyerogliphs and stone tablet telling about already posessing big enough power to threaten and destroy world in regular form.

So my theory is that Pokemopolis giants couldnt mega evolve if there didnt exist big enough mega stone or key items to unlock this level of strength in other regions beside Hoenn, which is doubtful to say the least for first option. Because if ancient ruins and temples hiding mystery behind pokemon mega evolving containing megalith existed in every region; than Lysandre wouldnt travel all the way to Hoenn to research about origins and source of this pokemon transformation.

Second alternative is doubtful as well.
Because if pokemopolis people didnt knew about mega evolution and this giants were exception than anything else there never existed reason to create items and stones big enough to induce process of mega evolving. Especially if this pokemon were nusproduct of mutation or some other source of energy(just like that gigantic Tentacruel or Dragonite for example were from Kanto).

Congruently regular mega and key stone likely couldnt be emitting enough energy and influence on such big creatures. Like they could do with normally sized Alakazam and Gengar.

Part of my reasoning stems from fact of Jigglypuff in regular form not having any effect because of its vocal abilities not being wide enough to affect abnormally big pokemon like those two were. With only Jigglypuff in its titan form having strong enough song to put them to sleep.

So unless scientists or criminal organization would manage to create oversized items(i believe theyre called Alakazite and Gengarite if not mistaken) in laboratory and test them on Pokemopolis giants after foolishly trying to release them. Or pokeballs with this two pokemon were transfered to places where megalith exists. Than i think they couldnt be capable to undergo process of transformation to ultimate form. Which would pretty much set in stone prophecy of this two titans destroying life on earth becoming reality.

Im not sure how this two pokemon became so huge either. But maybe ancient civilizations experimented with regular Alakazam and Gengar through use of special artifacts and ancient scrolls casting some sort of spell on them in becoming such giants. Not having energy and enough power to control them afterwards turning against their creators. Applying same process on Jigglypuff to make it become titan in moment of desperation to stop evil they created which already destroyed Pokemopolis by than.

Sealing them in primitive pokeballs along with Jigglypuff as precaution measure to not rebell against humans too.

Just random speculation.
