Could we have a gen without true version exclusive Pokemon?

The lack of any discussion on this in promotional material has made me consider this - could this be the first generation without version exclusive Pokemon? By this time last gen the Pokemon website was already noting several pairs of version-exclusives.

The 12-hour difference could be to limit "version" exclusives to day/night cycles - meaning it would be easier for certain players to obtain a certain species in one game over the other, but not impossible. The only examples we've seen so far of implied version exclusives have been tied to time of day - A-Raticate for night and Gumshoos for daytime.

It's possible that only Lunala and Solgaleo could be the true difference between the two versions . . .

i disagree as it was said that Totem Raticate and Totem Gumshoos were exclusive to the versions. i think there are game exclusives and they haven't revealed them fully yet.
we could always dream though. But, its unlikely GF would do this because exclusives = $

Don't think so. Trading is part of the games and is way for players to connect with others. I don't think we will ever see a game without version exclusives.

From the Pokémon Sun and Moon website:
Some of the Pokémon that appear in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are different—including Solgaleo and Lunala, which hold the key to the story.

I'm pretty sure that implies that there are more version exclusives sadly.

Version exclusive pokemon are basically the reason we have two versions of each game instead of one. At least that's how it seems to me, starting from red/green versions in japan.

I can't really see version exclusives going away.

No, and because of one main thing: money. There's a lot of green stuff in these monsters, so there is no way they're going to provide everything in a single game. It would be bad for business. And, as other have said, trading is a huge factor of the series, one of the franchise's key components, so they encourage people to buy different/both games. But, again, the biggest factor is cash. They're a company, and they're out to make money, as they're not a charity or just making games for the heck of it. So I sincerely doubt that the end of version exclusives will ever come. No, there will always be a need to trade in order to catch em all, and with the profit GF can make from the sale of multiple games, there is no way that they'll put the breaks on such a concept.

I'm going to say that the Totem Pokemon are day/night and version exclusive in this case. Look at this quote from the website:

Except for a few scenes, time in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon is tied to the actual time. Pokémon Sun operates on the same time as your Nintendo 3DS system, but time in the world of Pokémon Moon is shifted by 12 hours.

This suggests that certain scenes will always be day or night. If I recall, the cutscene with Zinnia on Sky Pillar implied you were knocked out overnight as well. I don't think they'll force you to wait for it to be the right time when a scene is to be encountered, but instead imply a time skip.

I should hope that no one buys both versions anymore just for version exclusives.

I mainly get both because I like to play through the game a second time, along with all the version differences, and without deleting my original file.
