In DP, Lake Trust, (Shinji is Trust in Japanese), Emrit resides, and...

481 Emrit
D – It taught humans the pain of sorrow as well as the treasure of joy. It is called the god of emotion.
P – Although it slumbers somewhere deep in the lake, its spirit is said to leave its body and flitter on the water surface.

Could perhaps Shinji come in contact with this, and lost his emotions?

So, discuss? I mean, could this explain why he is so "heartless"?

This wouldn't be fun. Shinji is just naturally an asshole, the anime's representation of a NetBattler. We want him to be a dickwad, darnit!
Anyway, this theory is flawed, because Shinji expresses anger, which is an emotion, as you know.
Shinji is heartless because his last girlfriend dumped him, and he decided to devote himself full-time to being an asshole trainer. :p
Either that, or his only one true love is his Elekid. He's sexually confused, so he takes it out on Ash&co. Oh, yes. Hott Elekid on Shinji ACTION!!!

That, madam sir, is a cool theory. I'd love to see more continuous legendary involvement in the D/P storyline, like what Johto did, but even beyond that.

That's a pretty cool theory! ^^
It'd be awesome if it was true. xD

Is it really? They could just show him before and then the Emrit and never do anything about it.
Or Satoshi-tachi could try and bring them back and help him for no apparent reason like they sometimes do.

I'm more inclined to believe Shinji has more experience than he lets on, and is "starting over" in Sinnoh just like Satoshi. I don't have any other rational explanation for why his Elekid is so strong, and why he was able to catch Ringuma (although it should be noted he caught it with Hikozaru, supposedly inexperienced).
