Um...what do you prefer, pokémon sayign their names or the pokémon's unique cries?

I prefer the cries as they make pokémon seem more like living creatures.

Not really, as the cries of most of the first-three gens sound like random computer noises.

If the cries were made to sound like more accurate animal noises then they would earn my vote. The only think I like about them repeasting their names is I have trouble pronouncing some.

Interesting thing I noticed, Starly's cry sounds like the tune that plays in Zelda games when you solve a puzzle.

Here you can find (among game music) Pokémon cries and pronounciation.

I would like them to say their names, but still sound like animal cries. Some names are supposed to sound like animal cries.

I'm all for the cries. I hate hearing them say thier names, it just seems so stupid and juvanile to me.

"KOFFING"
"CHARBOK"
"PikaPi"

I like the names. Though there is also the factor Habunake mentioned of the unrealism of the cries. (I haven't played Generation IV yet.)

Well, Pokémon IS supposed to be a kid's show. And I can't even imagine how the Pokémon would sound in the anime with their cries. It would probably give me a headache.

Lol, I was waiting for that responce. It is a kids' show, but to me the names make it seem more like a preschool show; but that's just me... The whole name thing is way too cutsey for me, it reminds me of infants learning to talk who only know one word; and if I'm sending a Pokemon out to battle a tough opponant, babies are the last thing I want them to remind me of! It's intresting that pretty much all of the Pokemon on the show speak/communicate with their names except for the ones who really command respect; the legendaries (at least that's how it was last time I regularily followed the show). Though I'd rather hear growls, purrs, squaks and other more animal-like sounds coming from Pokemon, though I do love the idea of the bird Pokemon saying their names as they mimic the trainers around them like real birds.

Some Pokemon get the name-as-cry pass for being badass (the aformentioned Arbok/Koffing, Seviper, Scyther) or adorable (Pikachu, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, and associates). Others could do better with animal cries--either the ones that are supposed to be big ass-kickers (e.g. Onix) or whose names just don't sound right as monster sounds (Rattata, Gardevoir, Vespiquen).

More Pokemon should be able to speak human languages. Many more psychic Pokemon than normal, for instance the Abra and Raltz lines, Mr. Mime, many kinds of ghost Pokemon, the like. Mind, the criteria for who should speak and what is kind of subjective. I'm cool with Machoke making grunts and rumbling growls, for instance, wheras Murkrow looks like it aught speak (perhaps in the tradition of talkin' black birds, and confusing crows with ravens).

In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, a Murkrow said "The password is… HAIL GIOVANNI." A Dodrio said "MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL, WHO'S THE FAIREST ONE OF ALL?"

Gardevoir has a pretty weird but cute cry. It's a very nice Psychic-type.
