The most recent version of CuteNews expects you to PAY to get rid of an ugly "Powered by CuteNews" type thing >O

How horrible.

I just downloaded a copy of the old version. No way do I want to have to use the new version. X.x

I actually don't care about the "Powered by Cutenews" thing. It doesn't disturb me.
And the new version is great^^

I'm actually planning on switching to another news system, once I find a decent one. I'm not gonna put up with that crap. <_<

You could just keep 1.3.6 and add hacks :p

Yeah, CuteFTP's like that too now. Free for 30 days only, then ya gotta pay. Apparently there used to be a free version and a "plus" version or whatever, and you paid for the latter.

I don't mind programmers expecting you to pay for what they've worked hard to produce - but in the case of Cutenews, it's been free from the start and most of what's featured in the new version has been developed by it's community.

The fact that those very people have to pay to use it is totally unfair.

The fact that it's suddenly switched from being free to having to pay for it is totally lame too.

It's a good thing we have a topic full of alternatives.

this a good reason to switch to phpnews, which for me is much better.

I don't see any reason to switch. Just keep a 1.3.6 and hack it up.

A good 1.3.6 can do wonders~

Hello?! It's just a fucking sentence! You can still use it for free! So stop bitching about that little "Powered by CuteNews". That's something totally normal. Most other ready to install scripts require you to keep that at the bottom of your site, too. And what's wrong about allowing people, who pay some money to the developers, to remove that sentence? I don't understand why you people make a drama out of this.

Umm how about reading carefully? CuteNews is still free.

I agree with you.
I have no problem with the credits on my site. They aren't that big.
Some time ago I actually thought of adding them myself, because I'm really grateful for being able to use such a great script.

It's the thing that you can't decide where to place them. There's been comments by people where the requirement destroys his footer and thus his entire layout.

Yes, exactly.

Forced credit for free is one thing - ruining layouts because of it is another.

Putting a line "Powered by Cutenews" at the bottom is nothing out of line or unstandard - but the way they've set it up is.

They've done that to try and launder money out of it - which is why it is effectively a paid-for service now.

It's a news script to make updating news easier.
