  1. He/Him
So, having taken inspiration from both @LightningTopaz and @Battista I've decided to start my own brainstorming blog. Not only to organize my thoughts (which is a lot on its own) but also to maybe get some feedback in the process. This blog will only be associated with "Battle From the Heart", as all other projects are on hold while I try to at least complete the Sinnoh Arcs before the end of the year (which is my New Year's Resolution this year... and unlike ones such as losing weight I intend to fulfill this one... besides, I've already lost nearly 30 pounds this year so that's been taken care of). So, time to get cookin'.

My current plans thus far are listed below for the upcoming chapters in BFTH:

  1. Do a handful of Contest-related chapters so that characters like Vivi and some other ones can get some spotlight, especially now that Jodi and Sophia, the two top seeds in the Contest realm atm, have already collected 5 Ribbons. Plus it'll lead to the karma that Liam will be getting because of his past actions (see: blackmail) and attitude (see: Sore Loser).
  2. Continuing Orion's "redemption arc", showing what he's been doing since Geo's group last saw him and how he's slowly rebuilding his Trainer career after his major fall at Lake Acuity. This'll tie into the Sinnoh League stuff and the final battle between him and Geo at said league.
  3. Completing the last Gym (Sunnyshore) and the Grand Festival plots. Like I mentioned above there are still some Contests left before the Grand Festival, which'll take place prior to Geo's final battle with Volkner (that Team Galactic rudely interrupted). It'll also finalize the Blaze plotline that was started way back in Oreburgh City, which'll reach its conclusion in the aforementioned Geo VS Orion battle.
  4. Tying up pre-League plotlines. There are a handful of plotlines/rivalries that have yet to be fully completed, which'll be tied up loosely in the lull before the Sinnoh League. Most of them involve Geo having some pre-League clashes with characters like Freya and Stu in order to reach their final point at the league. There is also one plotline that's not part of the pre-League clashes that'll also get (largely) resolved during this time.
Stuff I need to work on:

  1. Giving Danny another focus chapter or two. After the Team Galactic climax Danny has largely taken a backseat to Geo and Jodi as they compete for their final stretches before the Sinnoh League and Grand Festival, respectively. But I'm having trouble coming up with a good plot for him to take center stage. Plus most of his Mons have kinda fallen to the wayside so they need some more time to shine. Since I don't want him to end up like Brock I need to think of a plotline or two that'll show off his abilities as both a Breeder and the "brains" of the group.
  2. Possibly introducing the final members of the Elite Four. I've introduced Bertha and Flint so that leaves Aaron and Lucian. I want to flesh out their characters and give them some personality. Otherwise they'll just be "bosses" for later on. But I'm struggling to think of a good plotline for both of them to get involved with the main cast. Bertha's plotline was becoming curious about Cynthia's Draco Meteor Charge technique that she borrowed from Geo, thus she confronted Geo to see if he was as good and creative as Cynthia said. Meanwhile, Flint's plotline ties into the Volkner plotline, given their history and how the Geo VS Flint battle helped "spark" Volkner again, so his inclusion was pretty much a given. But I can't think of a good enough plotline for Lucian and Aaron to meet the main cast, thus fleshing out their personalities and not making them simply "bosses" for the E4 challenge like the games did.
These are what I'm working on atm and what I need to work on. Suggestions and ideas are welcome, especially for the last section, as I'm having a bit of trouble coming up with some ideas (the frequency of my migraines hasn't helped matters, either, but we're entering migraine season for me so that's to-be-expected). Still have a fair bit to do before the end of the year so I need to get crackin'.

Okay, time for some updates to this blog. Would've updated yesterday but it was late and I was tired when I made some changes to my plans. Worked out fine either way as I did some work today as well, thus giving me more to post about.

In any case, I've updated some of my plans for future events in Battle From the Heart.

  1. First, I've changed some plans for Liam's story. Originally I had planned that he'd win one Contest Ribbon before getting the banhammer because of his atrocious attitude and use of blackmail. However, instead I've changed it to Vivi winning that exact Ribbon instead, showing her growth as a Coordinator. Granted, I always planned on having her win a few Ribbons in Sinnoh, albeit not enough to enter the Grand Festival, which'll set herself apart from her inspiration Jessie, who never won any Ribbons in the entire length of Hoenn and Kanto. As a result it'll help further set the stage for Vivi's growth and eventual entering the Hoenn Grand Festival. So Liam will basically be the biggest loser of the Contest world that he brought upon himself thanks to his attitude and actions rubbing people the wrong way.
  2. Speaking of Hoenn, I've done some updates to Team Galactic's Hoenn Teams. Most of which are move changes but there's also a few plot changes. To start, Vivi's Ludicolo's original moveset was Razor Leaf/Trailblaze/Water Pulse/Icy Wind/Encore/Zen Headbutt. Now, I've swapped out Trailblaze, Water Pulse, and Encore with Bullet Seed, Bubble Beam, and Double Team, respectively, since they'd make for more flashy appeals in Contest, especially when paired together. Plus it helps give her Ludicolo some more Confusion Fu tactics, as it'll be her most unpredictable fighter but also her best Contest Mon. I'm also debating if I should teach Ludicolo Focus Punch instead of Zen Headbutt so it can combo well with Double Team. If anyone thinks that's a good idea let me know. Plus, thanks to a story change, her Ludicolo (as a Lotad) will already be friends with Victor's Nincada, allowing both Vivi and Victor to catch their first Hoenn Mons at the same time to give them some more bite sooner, as originally Victor got Nincada first, then Vivi gets Lotad. Here, because they're already friends they join their respective Trainers at the same time, thus saving some time and effort.
  3. Next is Vivi's Seviper. His original moveset was Poison Tail/Haze/Bite/Fire Fang/Dragon Tail/Dig. I've since swapped out Dragon Tail with X-Scissor. The reason behind this is because Vivi and Seviper join forces because they both have a distain for Lora, Geo's Gardevoir, since Lora was the one who beat up Seviper when he was being a bully to May's Mudkip. But because Lora is part Fairy a Dragon-type move like Dragon Tail would be useless against her. So I switched it for X-Scissor for a more neutral (but still powerful) hit. Plus it'll also work better when Geo gets his Zangoose since Seviper won't want to phase out Zangoose thanks to the two being natural enemies.
  4. Next is Vivi's Solrock. Originally its moveset was Zen Headbutt/Rock Throw/Fire Spin/Sunny Day/Solar Beam/Gyro Ball. But I've since swapped out Rock Throw and Fire Spin with Rock Slide and Incinerate. Both moves are AOE attacks and Team Galactic specializes in Multi-Battles (depending on if Weavile and later Grumpig enter the fray or not) so it'd make more sense. Plus Victor's Mawile already has Incinerate in her moveset, showing that they'll have the TM needed to teach Solrock a better Fire move than Fire Spin. I'm also debating on replacing Gyro Ball with Stomping Tantrum but I haven't decided on that yet. If anyone thinks that's a good idea let me know.
  5. And finally is Victor's Ninjask and Shedinja. Ninjask's original moveset was Fury Cutter/X-Scissor/Dig/Double Team/Swift/Metal Claw and Shedinja's was X-Scissor/Shadow Ball/Solar Beam/Will-O-Wisp/Dig/Metal Claw. However, I've replaced Swift on Ninjask and Dig on Shedinja with Gust instead. That way Ninjask has a Flying-type move and having three Mons with Dig on the same team felt a bit redundant. Plus, while Gust is a terrible move in general, it could be useful for Team Galactic like how James' Cacnea sometimes used Sandstorm to aid in escapes or how Ash's Pidgeotto and May's Beautifly actually made good use of the move in their runs, showing it's not complete useless. Plus it'll give Nincada a ranged attack prior to evolving (though it'll also have Mud Slap as an early move but that'll go the wayside for Dig later on).
Those are all the most recent updates to my plans. More will follow but this is what I've got for now. Let me know if these are good ideas and if I should make any changes.

EDIT: I forgot to mention something. I finally thought of a Danny-focused chapter late last night for the Sinnoh arcs, which is the chapter that is next after Vivi's first Contest win that I wrote this morning. Danny takes a mentor role to a teenage Breeder-in-training named Momo, showing off what he's learned over the course of his journey and teaching Momo how to care for and raise young Pokemon. And, of course, the need for an antagonist to further help showcase Danny's growth and act as an example for Momo will feature the usual group of Vivi, Victor, and Weavile. It also has bit of a subplot where both Momo and her main Mon, a female Bibarel, fall for Danny and his Bibarel because of their mentorship, but since Momo is younger than Danny (she's 15, he's 19) he won't notice/register her crush (and Danny's Bibarel is just too laid back to care if someone finds him appealing). It also means I made a COTD team for Momo that has a bunch of young Pokemon in it (sans her Bibarel, obviously, who is her strongest Mon). So that's the other plot that I've cooked up for the upcoming events in BFTH.

Now there's probably some I'm missing right now since it's been a while since I updated this chart and I've come up with some new ideas since so possibly another update is in the wings. But this'll do for an opening to give people the general idea of what combo moves will appear and how to identify them. If anyone has any other ideas for combo moves please let me know as it might be fun to try them out in this series.

Time for a new update to my plans. It's in the spoiler because it's long-winded (a bad habit of mine I admit).

Last night before going to bed I had a burst of inspiration regarding a certain character in Battle From the Heart: Liam Elbert. Liam is basically the egotistical jerk rival to Jodi who has known her since they were young, effectively being the "Kenny/Ursula" to her "Dawn". He's from the Elbert Family, another rich family in Sinnoh, and has had a rivalry with Jodi ever since they were kids (he always lost even prior to becoming a Trainer). He ends up becoming a Coordinator in order to continue that rivalry with her. Originally he was basically a snobbish Rich Boy Trainer (albeit older) who looked down upon others regardless if they were better than him or not (be it status or skill) and had an ego as big as Seto Kaiba's (though was never able to back it up). He slowly develops his skills as a Coordinator but is largely the butt of many jokes because of how incompetent and egotistical he is. Plus he tends to be a Bad Boss to his staff and has a Never My Fault mentality, which is why characters like Jarvis, his former battle coach, abandon him and join more benevolent characters such as the Shard Family (Geo's family).

Anyway, my original plans were him to be banned from Contests after a certain event that his ego triggered (and from his previous underhanded methods such as blackmailing Jodi with a Noodle Incident in her past) and he'd wallow in his anger for the rest of the series, only breaking it at the very end of the entire series. However, late last night I had a sudden slew of ideas that changed that. Yes, the events leading up to his ban remain the same, but now he's going to undergo some much-needed Character Development much sooner. This is because his family (moreso his father) disowns him after the disaster he causes in the Daybreak Town Contest and won't welcome him back until he restores his family's name and gets unbanned (the ban is considered temporary until he gets his act together). However, this ends up being the final thing needed to break Liam's ego and he instead comes to see his disownment as a blessing in disguise, as he now truly understands why he and his family are so hated in the eyes of others. As such he undergoes some significant Character Development, shedding several of his huge flaws like his pride, ego, self-entitlement, and tendency to put others down because of his spoiled attitude, and instead becomes a more humble, respectful, and kindhearted person. He'll even undergo a Significant Wardrobe Change, as he used to only wear suits to reflect his status even after his brutal humiliation around the time Geo got his Gible and Jarvis quit on him.

It should be noted that this change in his character won't come out of nowhere. It's been hinted at for quite some time, with one of the bigger triggers being his absolutely crushing loss to Orion around the time Geo was going to challenge the Snowpoint Gym. Geo will even note several that Liam's ego and his shell have developed cracks in them, especially after the aforementioned brutal loss to Orion, which even had the added effect of both Geo's group and Liam finding common ground for the first time. And each subsequent loss and humiliation has been causing those cracks to grow. The events in Daybreak Town will be the final death blow to his ego and break him wide open, thus triggering his resolve to change and accept that his past punishments and karma were because of his own actions. While he won't be a world-beater after his Character Development, still being somewhat inept at times because he's not the brightest of bulbs, it will cause him to become more competent and self-sufficient to the point he won't be a total loser or butt-monkey. He'll still have his moments of being the butt of a joke but they'll be far more spaced out compared to how he pretty much was a laughing stock every time he showed up on screen. He'll also make peace with Geo's group, apologizes for his past actions/attitude, and becomes more friendly with them. While I still plan for him to reappear at the very end of the series it'll now mostly show his growth and fully make amends with Jarvis instead of being a last-ditch effort to reclaim his "glory" like it was originally planned to be.

Anyway, that's the newest update to BFTH. I feel these new ideas add some much-needed depth to the character and evolve him from the petty, egotistical bully he's been portrayed as for a while. It also caused me to overhaul his character bio to reflect these changes. But let me know what you all think of this massive update to my plans for the character. That's all for now.

Update time.

I feel it's time to show off the character teams for the main cast and Team Galactic for the Sinnoh Saga since I'm slowly nearing the end and their moves have been completely finalized at this point. This should give you all an idea of how I format thing and map out my plans for character teams. While there are some slight difference between main/important/recurring character teams and COTDs, the basic layout is largely the same. So without further ado here's the character teams for Geo, Jodi, Danny, Vivi and Victor in Sinnoh. They're in the spoilers for size/length.

That about cover it. While, obviously, I haven't posted all the completed chapters right now, thus some of these might be spoilers, if anyone's been paying attention to my posts in the "What Did You Write Today?" thread you'll know the story thus far. Maybe next time I'll post the teams of certain important characters like Cynthia and the Galactic Commanders. That's all for now.

Just a quick post for me today because of RL events slowing me down.

Time for more lists of what I've got planned for upcoming events and for general purpose character/worldbuilding. These lists are largely finished but may need tweaking if necessary. Take a look and see what I've been cooking over time.

Now note that not all these items will be available at the start, when the character is introduced. Her stock will grow over time. By the time we reach Geo's final Gym Battle this'll be her final list, but what's available at the time (ie: an item that is either "Sometimes", "Frequent", or "Rarely") will depend on the chapter. But this should give you a general gist of what to expect from Jessica's traveling store (and her relatives later on, albeit with some changes here and there depending on the region, most notably the TM lists).

This is the list of the Arceus Plates and their hidden effects that'll come into play every so often. As you'll probably notice, the text on each specific Plate are the same as the ones in Legends: Arceus, acting as an Easter Egg (and it'll become more relevant in the Hisui Arcs). Note that, as of the current chapter, not all of these Plates hidden effects have been activated. Some have yet to have their functions revealed. But those will come in time. But this should give you an idea on what each hidden effect the Arceus Plates have in this series, showing they're not just bag fodder.

That's all for now, as I'm still wrestling with my writer's block. Will update again sometime in the future.

Time for some updates while I keep chipping away at my writer's block.

Here's Orion's final Sinnoh Team, consisting of all the Mons he's caught in past and current adventures. This should give you a pretty good idea at what kind of "strategy" he tends to use (see: brute force). It also shows that he's not one for always playing to a Mon's strengths (sans a few). But this should give you the idea of what Geo and others have to deal with when battling Orion. Especially since he regularly rotates his team to better adjust to any changes/challenges.

Here's Freya, sort of a pseudo-rival to Geo, albeit a very friendly one (and one that has a crush on our hero). Originally her team was just six members but I expanded it to add in a few more so she'd have a rotation strategy to better adapt to her opponents (and because she was inspired by Geo to do the same). Plus, like with Geo and Orion, it makes her less predictable in the eyes of recurring opponents if she's constantly changing up her team. And as you can see she gives her Mons meaningful nicknames (look them up if you don't know what they mean).

Here's Liam's team that he uses for Contests. As you probably already know he's Jodi's rival (though not her main one) and has a long history with her. All his Mons were given to him via Breeders thanks to his wealthy family, all with ideal Natures and such. Plus he pretty much perfectly embodies the flaws of rich people and validates Orion's viewpoint in the series. As explained in an earlier post in this blog things will take a drastic turn for him soon, but it'll end up being a blessing in disguise for Liam, changing his character for the better.

Here's Stu, the muscleheaded rival who has a strong desire to show his toughness and has the hots for Jodi (to her displeasure as she's already got too many Abhorrent Admirers on her case). He actually makes his debut during the Hearthome Tag Battle Tournament as a participant long before his "proper" introduction, being something of an Early Bird Cameo. He later adopts a rotation strategy in order to make himself less predictable. And while he slowly gets smarter (which isn't a high bar to jump over compared to how he started) he's still largely a strength-focused jock with an obsession with his muscles (though he's not a bad guy, as he does have a heart). He's a rival to Geo and Danny since he sees them as obstacles to Jodi.

Sleep Talk

Not sure if I showed this one before or not but here's Barry's Sinnoh Team, another rival, albeit a friendly one like Freya. As you can see his team is identical to his in-game team, just with more ideal moves and Abilities. He's a rival to Geo but also knows him personally since they're both from Twinleaf Town, thus is on good terms with the gang. He's basically the same as his in-game persona: high energy, low patience, and has a tendency to try to "fine" people. He's also not an Orion fanboy like how anime!Barry was to Paul, actually finding Orion's methods horrible.

That's all for today.
