Did anyone else notice that the sprite used for Entei in the prerelease pics and videos was in D\P? Do you think it's just because they don't have a new sprite yet, or are D\P sprites making a comeback?

I think the screenshots provided in one of the Sunday eps (the one when Raikou and Entei battle) is the battle screen in its beta stage (GF may not have made Gen V sprites for the older Pokemon yet).

Considering they didn't seem to change the graphics in terms of the characters very much, I doubt the sprites changed that much, though if they were redone, they'd probably have the same pose much like many other Pokemon had over the generations.

It's the same pose, but not the same sprite. Plus it's animated now, which makes it practically an entirely different sprite altogether.

It's still up for grabs depending on how much of a beta those videos were from, however I think it's a safe assumption that they took at least made use of existing sprites from Gen IV games in developing B&W. The actual overworld is making extended use of the 2.5D that was began with Gen IV, but it's clear that the sprites haven't been changed that significantly.

I'll be curious as to what they'll do for the 3rd version, though... especially if it's a 3DS game.

What I found strange is how they were using the D/P sprites instead of the superior quality HG/SS sprites. Maybe it's beta?

Sprites of Pokémon not found in a region are generally reused from a game before it. That's nothing new. Also, since the sprites are constantly in motion, it's only one frame.

...I still wonder why they used the D/P sprites rather than the HgSs ones...

Well, if that means that we are gonna be seeing Platinum's/HGSS' sprite set making a come back, they better remake RS. Because I've gotten tired of the Hoenn pokes having the same sprites for this long.

Not quite.

While that is true in games of the same generation; new games typically have a brand new sprite of every Pokemon, even if it's an old pose.

I expect the same to be true of BW even if it is for DS.

Also, how do you type "é"?

Seeing that they've animated/are going to animate every damn sprite, it's not so bad, since otherwise it would take a lot more work. Maybe the D/P sprites were easier to use for making animations.

Alt + 0233(on the numpad)

é

Also Alt + 130(on numpad)
Numlock must be on.

They were obviously working on HGSS and BW at the same time. Hence the no walking Pokemon, older sprites -etc. etc.

But then why not just use the walking pokemon feature in BW?

Nobody ever said you had to be smart or efficient to produce video games.

But you'd have to be to get something as successful as Pokémon.

No, not really. Marketing/brand name recognition does most of the work these days.

Success is mostly being in the right place at the right time, especially with marketing. Nothing to do with the actual quality of a product.

Anyway, sprites won't be the same because thi is a new generation. And even if they look the same in the images, they move. :D
