LOS ANGELES (AP) - A tracking firm says "The Dark Knight" has set a box office record for a midnight debut.

Media By Numbers says the new Batman movie from Warner Bros. brought in $18.5 million Friday from its midnight screening in 3,040 theaters.

That bested the 2005 performance of "Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith," which took in $16.9 million at its debut.

"The Dark Knight" figure did not include any of its 3 a.m. or 6 a.m. showings.

Wow. I figured it would be a big hit, but I didn't anticipate it setting ANY records. Should be interesting to see what it grosses over the weekend.

Doesn't surprise me. It was greatly anticipated.

Jeez, that'll make for some very crowded theaters.
As much as I'd love to see it on opening weekend, I think I'll wait a week. Less of a chance of dealing with teenagers chatting through the whole thing. >.<

You have no idea DX I went to a midnight showing... not only did we get a seat in the very back row, but the audience there couldn't have been more obnoxious. Still an amazing movie though.

I went to the opening day showing at 9 PM. I got there at 8 PM expecting long lines. I did not expect there to be a four line que that was filled, and having the other people wait on another que that was three lines long. I was in the crowd spilling off the second que. I will never see another movie on opening day again.

Also....

BEST MAGIC TRICK EVER!

I'm getting up bright and early tomorrow to go see this, I'm pretty damn psyched. Though I am not surprised its breaking box office records... This one was pretty hyped up IMO and I think Heath Leger's unfortunate death is gonna help sales even more. (As bad as that may sound.)

If you guys want to discuss the movie without using the spoiler tag, feel free to start a thread about it. Only reason I haven't is because I haven't seen it (was tempted to, but...eh, I usually only see one film a year in theaters, and I saw Iron Man).

But, in new related to this thread:

Looks like Dark Knight has broken another record. Not only does it have the best midnight opening ever, but has now claimed the title of biggest opening day film EVER. Between $60 million and $63 million, beating out previous record holder, Spider-Man 3, which managed just under $60 million. Now, in order to take the best opening weekend of all time, it needs to amass over $151.1 million. At this point, if it DOESN'T, then why continue showing the film at all (kidding, of course)?

Hate to double-post, but this is new news and worth of its own post.

It's official, Dark Knight now holds the record for highest opening weekend.

NOW the question is: How will it do in the long run? Can it make it to #1 grossing film of the year? Can it do even better and make it into the top 10 grossing films of all time?

If it gets all those will it be the first movie to hold the number 1 slot for all stats?

I was at a 9am showing in Imax and every seat was filled. It was ridiculous.

The movie itself was excellent. Not the best movie ever, but certainly on my list.

And...ANOTHER record is claimed by the Dark Knight. Fastest movie to $200 million. Previous record holder made it there in 8. Dark Knight nailed it in 5.

And, of note, Dark Knight failed to beat Spider-Man 3 for highest Saturday box office by about $6 million. Still...not too shabby. As is, I'd be shocked if it didn't kick Iron Man and Indy down a notch in the top ten grossing films of the year.

I watched it today. I loved it, better than most of the marvel films i'm used to. The Joker's "image" in the film was better than his usual one. I'd like to write a better post but i'm on my PSP >.<

Throw on ANOTHER couple of records for the Dark Knight. It's now had the biggest second weekend of all time, beating out Shrek 2 by about $3 million. It also made it to $300 million in 10 days, beating out Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which took 16 days to hit that mark.

Also, as of today, it will have surpassed Indy 4 and Iron Man as the top grossing film of the year (in the US, anyway). It's also, apparently, at #23 in all-time earnings.

I looked at the opening weekend figures in the paper. The top three, from the bottom, was something at 8.something mil, Mamma Mia at 22.something mil, and TDK at 155.something mil. It was a real wake-up call.

Another record. Fastest to $400 million. Making it in less than half the time of the previous record-holder, Shrek 2. And, apparently, it surpassed Spider-Man yesterday as the 7th highest grossing film in the US.

...

lWhy so serious?

I'm sorry, I just had to do it. :O
