Source.

Warner Bros. Pictures plans to rerelease blockbuster The Dark Knight in January, the height of Academy Awards voting season, says The Hollywood Reporter.

"It's just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people," a source told the trade.

Warners domestic distribution president Dan Fellman acknowledged ongoing talks with IMAX executives about the prospect of restoring the film to some number of giant-screen venues in January. It's uncertain if The Dark Knight also will reappear in conventional theaters at that point.

To date, the film has earned about $513 million domestically and $440 million internationally, including more than $55 million in IMAX grosses. The DVD and Blu-ray Disc are expected to hit stores in December.

Nothing like paying to see a movie you own on DVD.

Well, movies in a theater ARE vastly better than watching them on a TV screen, to be honest. And I heard Dark Knight was really good in IMAX.

I think this is more a matter of "paying to see an experience you can't get on DVD" than "paying to see a movie you own on DVD".

After all, not everyone can afford top of the line home theater systems.

True. Maybe it's just the cheapskate in me that doesn't see the benefit.

I don't either, but I will say this: after seeing the first three Harry Potter movies on DVD, and the fourth in a theater, I pretty much decided that theaters are the way to go for huge epic things like Batman and Harry Potter.

I assume this is US-only?

Since it's the domestic distribution guy, it seems likely. But, since this was from a Hollywood newspaper, it would make sense that they'd only talk to hte domestic distributor. So...yeah...I dunno. Probably will hear more around November/December.

Amen to that. Watching Transformers both on DVD and in the theaters was proof enough for me.

I wish WB the best on this; it would really be nice if a comic book film gets an Oscar nod. Then maybe the critcs might quit frowning on the genre. (A girl can dream, right?)

I hope it wins. I'm sick and tired of Comic Books being treated unfairly by critics.
