we all know pokemon as supposedly targeting young gamers, but I differ.
for example, I was surprised that XY didn't get an e10 ESRB rating because of the graphic overhaul, let alone the darker backstory/storyline.
then there's coliseum and XD, which definitely had it's moments that could've scared some random kid till they grew older.
team galactic's actions include the following: terrorist-esque bombing, torture of the lake trio, nearly destroying the universe just for a new one that most likely would not have happened, etc.
and my favorite: ghetsis almost impaling you using his kyurem-controlling cane.
what do you think are the darkest moments in pokemon gaming history? and yes, it includes the side series and spin-offs.

I think Ghetsis mentally abusing N. That was horrible and he probably psychologically scarred N for life.

I didn't think X/Y were dark though I did cry at Az's story. (Come to think of it though, that firework scene was terrifying) :p

-Death of Marowak (Team Rocket actually killed a Pokemon! Damn it guys it wasn't even necessary you're just jerks!)
-Pretty much Pokemon X an Y in general.
-Ghetsis wanting to murder you :D! (Apparently it's just a mistranslation but still, thank you N!)
-N's freaking room

I thought that the end to X/Y was right depressing. B&W were the scariest games but they had the best ending.

Ghetsis actually being the mastermind and N having been mentally abused his whole life.

It's worse when you consider Ghetsis to be N's father.

What? There was a mistranslation? What was mistranslated??

Core series!
-I'm surprised I didn't hear much protest over Team Galactic's trigger-happy use of bombs. I would've thought with society's terrorist phobia, they'd make a bigger stink about it than the Game Corner.

-Ghetsis... just about everything he stands for makes me shudder a little on the inside. Y'know, being a freaky manipulative bastard who tries to kill protagonists (it wasn't just in BW2. I got the feeling in BW that "you will be eliminated" meant he'd silence you permanently with that Hydreigon ), and the way he snaps when he's defeated. Yeesh...

-Team Flare and the Ultimate Weapon was a bit darker than the others; while killing everything was more like an unfortunate side effect in RSE and DPPt, Flare's direct goal was to simply kill everyone.

-And then there's N's room in BW2. Nothing like broken music box with an already creepy-sounding song, right...?

Spin-offs!
-The Societea destroying an entire island in Guardian Signs. Sure, it was uninhabited, but it shows that big ol' stone Death Star was NOT screwing around... then consider that they were going to fire on all the other islands too.

-The whole reveal about the Future in PMD Explorers series. First you nearly get slashed apart by an execution squad of Sableye. Then you're running for your life through a desolate wasteland. And your partner is not taking it too well that everything they thought they knew about the end of the world was a lie, that they're being hunted down by someone they thought was a hero, and there's a possibilty they could be stuck in the dark future forever. :-|

Yeah he was meant to freeze you so you can watch what he does to the world, instead when it got translated it seemed like he wanted to impale you on Kyurem's icicles.

The reason why Pokemon doesn't get a higher rating is because of its subtlety, it only hints at these things.

For me the darkest moment is Giovanni's suicide.

he never committed suicide, otherwise he wouldn't have been in that HGSS event and B2W2.
HOWEVER, in the original PMD games, you run away from your team to try an attempt at suicide. in fact, IT EVEN MENTIONS YOU WANTING TO DO IT!

Ghetsis's manipulation of N stands out. You can take Cyrus and Lysandre's attempts at wiping out the world as "worse" actions--though of course, they don't succeed, and you can categorize them along with you typical cartoonish "take over the world" villains. Nothing really compares to the psychological abuse Ghetsis put him through, beginning from when he was just a child.

Grovyle's sacrifice and subsequently his erase from history in the Mystery Dungeon games also sticks in my mind, although Explorers of the Sky kind of did away with that by bringing him back in the alternate timeline.

The side games had the juicier stuff, I think. Pokemon Colosseum was covered in a thin layer of grime, with you stealing Pokemon. Then PMD had Grovyle's death, as Ivysaur mentioned.

Definitely Ghetsis and his psychological "brainwash" of N, scarring him for life and effectively shunning him from society.

His death was in the HGSS event, and BW2's PWT seems pretty non-canon past the story Driftveil tournament.

I would say AZ's story. The war, his Pokémon dying. His thirst for revenge causing him to build the machine that killed many to revive his own Pokémon. And then he's left for centuries to live in guilt, waiting for his Pokémon to show up again.

Maybe that's just how I heard it but that was very depressing and dark imo.

AZ's story was so sad; I cried twice at that (during his backstory and then when his Pokemon comes back to him). I had never cried at a computer game before, not once in 32 years. Thanks, depressing Nintendo :p

Also I was thinking and (I know it's not cannon or anything) but does anybody else suspect that Cyrus and/or N are meant to be autistic? If they are, then it's even more horrible that they get mentally abused. (I'm sure it says in Pearl something about Cyrus' parents treating him badly).

What is PWT in B&W2? I want to see Giovanni if he's in it. Or was it wireless and now, nobody can play with it.

PWT was the Pokemon World Tournament. It was an in-game brackets-and-elimination tourny that I personally would like to see more of... anyways. Once the player beats the Champion, they can challenge many older characters from older games (Gym Leaders and Champions). Giovanni appears in the Kanto Leaders and World Leaders tournies. Of course, this has since sparked controversy over whether anything at the PWT was canon, or whether the "Giovanni's suicide" theory was true or false. One can still see Giovanni in the PWT as long as they have BW2, no online interactions required.

The plot twist at the end of Colo while not particularly shocking or dark for me, was something i thought could upset some young child playing it.

I mean, the self-proclaimed "affable mayor of Phenac" somersaults and becomes crazy-haired psycho-eyed leader of Cipher. Then attacks you with really high level pokes

Ahahahahaha, they will! I traded all my strong Pokémon into X and Y and I'm sure I'm just left with a Level 22 Watchog xD This could take a while :p
