In her second official contest, Hikari's rival will be an old childhood friend, Kengo.

Is anyone else getting "possible D/P ship" vibes from this?
 
I suspect this could become popular with the people who want to spite Hikari/Nozomi shipping. So...probably means I'll become one ^^.
 
I got 'possible ship' vibes, but then I felt bad because I know it's only because Kengo's male.

I'd like to see a Nozomi/Hikari/Kengo triangle, though. :D
 
1. He probably won't be a recurring character. Hikari doesn't need two main rivals this early on when Nozomi is barely fleshed out so far. We don't know anything about Nozomi and right now her personality consists of well...mostly fanfiction. Considering Nozomi is bland at the moment until the writers flesh her out more, introducing a second rival this early is a mistake.

2. Childhood friend doesn't mean love, but if it does, it will be interesting to see him crush on Hikari but she's disinterested.
 
I agree on the very first part of Scott's second point. Then again, you're working with extremely little information. Kengo could be a recurring friendy rival (something May did not have) OR a CotD, never to be seen again save perhaps Hikari's Grand Festival-y event. He could be older than Hikari, her age, crushed on her in the sandbox or just did think of her as a friend.

Can we wait for the episode before jumping the 'ship trolley?

It's Penguinshipping, unless something far more pressing makes itself known and proves it existed first.
 
I disagree that Hikari shouldn't get a second rival until Nozomi's been more fleshed-out. a) Nozomi's screentime will not necessarily decrease if the second rival is introduced earlier; b) if the two rivals to Hikari should meet at the same time, there'd be an extra dynamic in play, which could only help Nozomi's character. Hell, she was at her most interesting in the first DP contest when she was interacting with Ash; c) distinguishing Hikari from May by giving her two rivals from the get-go would be a good thing, right?

Either way, there's no reason to assume at the moment that there'll be any kind of tension between Hikari and Kengo. I'm still not keen on Hikari being paired with any of her rivals. In fact, Nozomi/Kengo would be a lot more original.

You guys want Hikari to be differentiated from May, yet you want her to fall for a male coordinator? Sure, this guy probably won't give her roses like Drew did and this guy is a childhood friend, but its too similar just coming off of AG.

I mean, are the writers really THAT repetitive? Its not like they introduced another "she-looks-too-developed-for-her-age" 10 year old girly girl, just to do Contests and dumped a bunch of cute Pokemon on her like they did with May...

...

You really one to talk pal, the second we saw the opening you were already tring to pair Hikari and Nozomi together.

She could fall for Ash or Shinji, did you ever think of that, that would keep her different too.
 
How in the world would Hikari/Kengo be any more of a ripoff than Hikari/Nozomi? I think it's preposterous to act as though Appealshipping isn't a great big rehash just by waving the sparkly lesbian wand over everything. If Hikari and Kengo bicker, then granted, that would propel it further towards CS than Appealshipping. But if Hikari has harmonious relationships with both her rivals, I'd say the childhood friends angle and the fact that Nozomi is Hikari's main rival, not Kengo, means that Appealshipping is still beating Hikari/Kengo in the redux stakes.

Not that I want Hikari to end up with either of her rivals, anyway.

And nobody's treating it as likely that H/K will have any evidence, so don't put words in our mouths.

Calm down. ;)

Hikari and Nozomi don't bicker with each other, which makes it less like any other ship on this show. The fact that they're both girls would honestly provide us with something new in this show, not that that's the only reason it would be different.

In any case, he could just be like May's Hoenn coordinator rivals and never show up again. Since he's not in the opening, there may not be any big deal here.
 
Nozomi/Kengo could be really interesting, and certainly more original than either Nozomi/Hikari or Kengo/Hikari.
 
I like Royalshipping, since Piplup and Prinplup are "royal".

Still, I wanna see Kengo first. I have a feeling they might make him look like the DP Rival, so he'd be hot.
 
If Kengo really is going to be a romantic interest for Hikari, I want him to be a really crazy character instead of someone really serious who just wants to go around and be the strongest coordinator/trainer ever with Hikari trying to catch up to him or something... I can totally see him call Hikari his "princess" or something like that with Hikari being all angry and yelling at him for not battling with her, and he doesn't even notice! XD Actually, I think I would like that even if he is just a one-shot character! XDD (Come to think of it... it'd be so funny if Kengo were like Tamaki from Ouran! XDD)

Of course... he's probably going to end up being a Drew-ish character... T__T
 
Kengo probably will be a one-shot character. I doubt we're going to see a guy with the Pochama line as a major rival.

People on Bulbagarden, for some odd reason, have forgotten the entire Hoenn Contest arc. All they think about is Drew and Harley, whereas back in Hoenn May met MANY coordinators who she never ran into again.

Hikari is going to meet many one-shot coordinators as well since this is her first region. I think Kengo will be one-shot as well because they're been doing a fine job balancing the rivals this saga.

Ash has one rival, (Shinji), and Hikari has one rival (Nozomi). Its much better that they keep this balance until late in the saga. Nozomi is barely even fleshed out yet which is sad since she's an important character.
 
^ Kengo is Hikari's childhood friend, which is a good reason to suspect he'll have a bigger role in the series than the oneshot co-ordinators May met in Hoenn. But even if he doesn't, so what? This is a speculation topic; nobody's treating anything as confirmed beyond what the episode summaries told us.
 
On rewatching Beauty and the Breeder, this would be a lot like Susie/Zane. (Interestingly, Brock realised the possibility of that one before it was said.) Of course, Ash would be in the triangle rather than Brock.
 
Be awesome if that Roserade in the Sonou Town episode before the Contest was his...
