I've always wondered wut her hair color is. Sorry if it's a stupid question. Is it black, dark gray, or blue?

I think it's black. In her official game artwork it is. But i'm not so sure if they meant it to be black since in the anime it sometimes looks blue.

It's okay if the thread was about Brendan or Rowan (when he was a kid), but I don't see the point asking for Dawn's hair color...

It's black that they stylized with blue.

It's pretty much the same case with Ethan's sprite hair colour, they even changed it from a beta sprite where it was undeniably black, probably because, as they said in the above link "actual black tends to look very poor in animation"

This really makes some people's analysis of Dawn's game artwork, with undeniably black hair to find out it uses mostly blue hues kind of dumb in retrospect (especially when the effect in a larger scale makes it come out black).

The anime itself has been known to change colours used officially in the games merely because it would look better (or are easier to animate). Dawn's jet black hair doesn't look as bad in her game artwork because much more detail is put into it than in a normal anime episode where they just use blue, and a darker shade of blue for shadows.

Now imagine how bad that would look on her black shirt.

Games=Black
Anime=Blue

They made it blue to add a bit more character and maybe to reflect her starter choice.

I say Blueish Black.
My computer says blue.

Hence this trope. They even address this sort of analysis in the very first paragraph: "seemingly brown-haired characters to really, upon closer inspection, have hair that is a shade of green"

Looking at her DP artwork contrasting to her obviously black vest, the bluish tint in her hair stand out more (as compared to the Platinum artwork where it appears more black).

Everything about her hair screams hair colour dissonance and not a result of anime hair:

  • The anime's tendency to slightly alter game colours so that they look better in animation (or at the very least, look better when they animate it, since their models have a bit less detail in colouring than the still art).
  • The official game artwork with her hair obviously looking black on the surface but if actually use hues of blue to get that effect across.
  • The fact that this "blue hair" sprite phenomenon happened with other characters with black hair. Comparison here and here
  • This is actually fairly common in the series with the brown-haired Blue and the traditionally red-headed Misty coming out with VS sprites that are roughly the same colour.

To me, Dawn's game hair color is just a really dark blue. Even her overworld and VS. sprite show it. Plus, if you look closely her official artworks have a slight blue tint.

But I agree that the anime changed Dawn's hair color for animation and aesthetic reasons. But it really does look better on her. I'd hate to think that Dawn's hair is pure black.

As far as I'm concerned it's not hair color dissonance and her hair is a navy - dark blue in the games. Even Sugimori has drawn her with a lighter blue in one of the TCG artworks.

But didn't we have this discussion a few weeks ago?

I think it was a few months ago actually. ._.

But I forgot about that card. I was glad to finally have somthing Dawn related in the TCGwas surprised to see that he actually drew it with such an obvious blue. You'd think it would've been a black-ish blue-ish color...

So yeah, it's pretty safe to say Dawn's hair is blue/navy. Well, at least in my opinion...;-)

If its hair colour dissonance, her hair would be black, considering that blue seems to be the new black (and the other evidence of hair colour dissonance for that shade I showed). The article isn't talking about alternate colourations between mediums of the same franchise, that's this. It's what the anime does (possibly from them seeing the bluish hue). The game artwork definitely has tints of blue, hence hair colour dissonance.

Besides, that card in question was drawn in a more simplistic art style than what Sugimori usually does for the still art in the games (other cards based on characters tend to just sued cropped pictures of the official art), and like the entry says, black usually doesn't come off as well in animation than it does in real life.

So really, if you're asking for hair colour, it all depends on the medium. Anime, they went for an actual blue colour, games are trying for a stylistic black, and I hear DPA has a green haired one. Platina in this picture also seems to have a purplish tint used as a stylized black as well. No point in trying to pin down one colour.

Hair's a popular topic apparently.

It may be going through a process called multispectrum fluxuation. Basically, it randomly changes colors. So, yeah.....

Also, most of the colors seem to apply to what Rihanna's face would look like after Chris Brown beat her up. Hah, outdated pop culture jokes.

Stylized black (since black don't usually look good in sprites or artwork as someone already pointed out with a trope reference), maybe even blue-black as opposed to brown-black or very dark brown.

Yeah, that looks gray to me. If this thread was placed into the anime section the answer would be blue, however, it was posted in pokémon world, and thus the answer is grey.

(after inspecting pics)

yeah...it actually is dark gray. I think the anime messed her up actually by making her hair blue. but anime does do that...

I actually think it's kind of a mix of dark gray, black and a blueish color.. but that's just me.

What's being asked though, the real colour depicted in the picture or what they're going for? If I recall, Somari actually analyzed the palette they used and its actually shades of blue.

In any case, if its what is visibly shown, yeah, a dark grey or blue (or purple) depending on canon and which picture you're looking at. If its what they're going for, its probably a case of hair colour dissonance and its black, in all its incarnations.

I know very black hair shines blue, but the animé's is obviously blue. I want to think that the game Dawn's hair is perhaps a shade darker, but still blue.
