So Alolan Rattata has adapted by only coming out at night, when Yungoos isn't around. This sounds a lot like Rattata will only be found at night while Yungoos will be found during the day and a return to previous generations where certain Pokemon could only be found during specifics parts of the day.

Maybe they won't do morning, afternoon, evening and night this time. Maybe just a day/night split for them?

Morelull also seems like it could be another night-only Pokemon.

I sure hope so. I always thought those made the games more interesting and realistic.

I believe the site also mentions Formatis being nocturnal, so I could see it being a night only encounter.

On the other hand if you can only play during a certain time of day for whatever reason, you might not get to see some pokemon.

Could always tinker with the clock. Sure, you'll incur the penalty, but that's only temporary.

The time of day capture rates were cut due to kids staying up past their bed times. So who knows. Maybe they'll bring back just mornings and dusk.

Then again, they've gone back on their words before (simplicity, customization) I don't see why time of day capture rates should be diffrent.

Most people can access to GTS though. So they'd still be able to trade for whatever they're missing.

It seems likely that day & night encounters are returning. I hope so too because it'll make exploring Alola more interesting.

Possible. After all the games are called Sun and Moon. Sun is in the day time while the moon is in the night.

I really hope so, they added a lot of realism to the games. It also rewards you for taking the time to play at certain times of the day.

As a college student I can confirm that I play Pokemon after my bedtime regardless of whether or not I get incentivized to do so, so I'm not sure how effective this strategy has been xD

I really hope this comes back, it just makes the world seem much more real. I do hope that 'night' starts at 6PM again and not at 8PM like in gen IV. That way you have a bit more time to catch the night mons and children (and college students) won't have to stay up past their bedtimes :p

I have a feeling it might. I mean, according to some screenshots, some Pokemon, like Morelull and Alolan Ratatta, appeared in a darkened area, while others, like Gumshoos and Palossand, in broad daylight. Granted, it may have just been dark because it was a forest and bright because of it being at the beach or in a wasteland, but still, I would like it to return. After all, these games are called Sun and Moon, so there would have to be some sort of logic behind the idea of day/night encounters, especially considering that many Pokemon descriptions state that some are nocturnal. However, if they are indeed coming back, I hope they make Night come around 6 PM. While staying up isn't an issue for me, I know it's an issue to many others, so by making Night start at 6 PM, it'll be a nice time for everyone to catch what they want without getting in the way of sleep schedules. But either way, I do hope that they bring back the day/night encounters, as it makes the games seem more alive and real.

As for the issue of not being able to catch certain Pokemon late at night...

What if Solgaleo and Lunala had some kind of special power or field move that allowed you to invert the time of day for a period of time? I mean they are the Sun & Moon legendaries so you'd think they'd have some control over day and night.

They could even have a weird area of effect thing going on where the area around you becomes bright/dark. (like having a patch of day surrounding you while walking around at night)

I know it sounds kinda ridiculous but it could work. This way you also wouldn't have to worry about disrupting the other people of Alola since it would only be day or night in your immediate area. So it's not like you're throwing the whole region out of whack just to catch a few Pokemon.

Now that time of day encounters are confirmed, which Pokémon do you guys think will be exclusive to either time? So far we know of Yungoos/Rattata and Drifloon/Misdreavus. I'm thinking Ledyba and Spinarak will be counterparts too.

Yungoos/Rattata don't necessarily have to be version exclusives though, it's only confirmed that Totem Gumshoos is in Sun and Totem Raticate in Moon. Though I wouldn't be surprised if that also means that the non-totem versions are version exclusive too.

The only one I can think of now is Lurantis probably being exclusive to Moon, as it's described as being nocturnal. Totem Lurantis will therefore probably also be exclusive to Moon. Maybe with Bounsweet's evo as it's counterpart?

EDIT: nevermind I see I misinterpreted the question wrong, it was about day/night exclusives and not version exclusives ^^;

I would be surprised, because that kinda messes up the whole interplay between Yungoos and Rattata, if either side doesn't exist in the opposite version. Yungoos failed to deal with the Rattata problem and yet, there are no Rattata to be found at all? Or alternatively, Rattata became nocturnal in order to evade a predator that isn't in the game?

Zangoose and Serviper are version exclusives despite their "well known ongoing feud" though. Being version exclusive doesn't mean they don't exist in the other version, you do see people battle with them for example. You simply never find one yourself.

However I see I misinterpreted the question in the first place, it was about day/night exclusives, not version exclusives, sorry about that *facepalm*. I think we can for sure say that Yungoos and Rattata will be day/night exclusives indeed.
