Source w/promo image

Though it's been rumored for a number of months now, an animated version of the DC Comics teen superteam Young Justice got its official announcement today via DC's The Source Blog and the Cartoon Network 2010 upfront announcing new programming for the coming year. Presumably based on Peter David and Todd Nauck comic of the same name which ran for 56 issues starting in 1998, the "Young Justice" series will feature a "junior Justice League" consisting of Superboy, Robin, Kid Flash, Miss Martian, Artemis and Aqualad.

However, at this point it's unclear exactly how much these characters will synch up with the original "Young Justice" series or the modern DCU as there are changes to the team evident even in the early teaser image. For example, Artemis is a name that's never been associated with a teen heroine in DC Comics, though the design of the character does resemble the former YJ member Arrowette. Similarly, the new version of Aqualand produced for the show is black, adding a bit of diversity to the all-white lineup of what is obviously a one-for-one comparison to the classic Justice League (although Green Lantern appears to have no teenage representative).

Not EXACTLY the Young Justice from the comic, but close enough. Honestly, I look forward to it. DC's great at team-based cartoons, and I anticipate this continuing that trend.

This is awesome news!

I wonder if this Artemis character is going to be an expy of Wonder Girl?

It has Greg Weisman at the helm. There's no chance this will be bad.

Just looked up some info on Facebook...the promo art looks awesome!

The character was originally going to be Arrowette but for some reason they changed her name. She was the first bit of details leaked about the series, and after that Aqualad's design came and then the roster from a private teaser poster showing(which also included a shot of the Justice League). The only change in the roster from that poster is Robin, who appears to be Tim Drake, replacing Nightwing (and technically Impulse changing to Kid Flash and Arrowette changing her name to Artemis). I'm a bit curious as to why they choose to create their own version of Aqualad to be the black character for the series rather than using Empresses. But my initial response to the characters:

Robin-Glad they're using him over Nightwing. I love Nightwing, but Young Justice was Tim's team and it's about time he got a starring role in a cartoon again. That is if this is Tim Drake. I hope he is Tim since, in my opinion anyway, Dick Grayson has been overused in Animation. He stopped being Robin in the 70s yet almost every cartoon chooses to use him as Robin. Not only does this screw over the other Robins, it also screws over his Nightwing identity.

Superboy-Glad to see him I guess. I believe this will be his first appearance outside of the comics.

Kid Flash-Bart's one of my favorite characters. I'm hoping they'll adapt his fear of dying subplot.

Miss Martian-Although I'd like to see Secret, I like Miss Martian so I'm okay with this.

Artemis-I'm assuming Artemis is just Arrowette with another name for now though. I wouldn't be shocked if certain aspects of Wondergirl's personality were wrapped into her though. I doubt she's the comic book Artemis though.

Aqualad-Can't really say much. He seems to be a new character, but he could be a black version of a previous Aqualad. I would have rather seen Empress though, especially since her father and his partner were amusing recurring characters.
I hope Red Tornado will still be the teams mentor too.

DC hasn't had a truly bad cartoon in a long time so I'm not really worried, especially with Weisman working on it.

Nightwing was never in the Young Justice team. Tim Drake was. You might be thinking of Teen Titans, a similar, but different team.

I'm wondering if this Aqualad's not a hint at things to come in the comics, since they killed off Tempest.

I was referring an unreleased promo poster that was shown behind closed doors before the series was officially announced. The person who released the information said that Nightwing was on the team. The poster rumor seems to be true now seeing as the only changes in the roster that poster released was Nightwing to Robin and Bart using his current identity instead of Impulse. Most fans started to complain about this change since Young Justice was Tim's team, and his two best friends were going to be on the team without him. Didn't mean to confuse you.

Ah, alright. Probably misread. My apologies.

I was going to say it's looks really cool, but then I saw black aqua lad, WTF!? Make the lame guy the black hero!? Well, I guess aqualad is cooler than aquaman, but the implications are annoying! lol

(Oh well, the character designs are really cool, I just hope it is a good series that doesn't turn into same old same old DC cartoon (which tends to happen to everything that is not batman))

I wonder how Linkara will react to this...

But yeah, sounds cool. I may watch it.

I am actually looking forward to this. I will always love Teen Titans the most though, but this looks promising. It'd be nice to see the Titans as guest stars, besides the characters that are Titans (Kid Flash, Aqualad [granted he was white in TT], and Robin [this is actually Tim Drake Robin, Dick Grayson is the leader of the Teen Titans]). Honestly, Robin looks too much like he did in Batman the Animated series though.

Tim Drake is kind-of a depressing character to think about because of Batman Beyond though, good thing they don't seem to fallow the same continuation. If it is going to have a Teen Titans cameo, then I wonder if Static will show up in that.

But Static wasn't a titan in the cartoon. He's an awesome character and all, but the DC universe is completely different from the animated universe. It looks like Young Justice is set in the animate universe, like TT was. Anyway, even if the titans don't show up, it still looks pretty awesome. ^^

Wait the black guy is aqualad? Holy shit, nice. Otherwise, the flash and robin designs look so much like their teen titan counterparts its not funny.

Kid Flash yes definitely, Robin doesn't at all. He looks like he did in Batman the Animated series, not in Teen Titans. (The cartoon of course.) And yep, Toonzone lists the names of each character under the poster. I was shocked they made him black, but the Green Lanturn went through the same change too. (I'm not racist, I just don't remember him being black...)

Don't mind Aqualad being black.

Love the rest of the cast.

Especially Miss Martian replacing Wonder Girl. Wonder Girl II is alright, but she's grown into kind of an abrasive character over the years.

I wonder if Artemis is going to be a composite character of Wonder Girl + Arrowette, though?

Bart Allen + Miss Martian interaction should hopefully be as funny as I'm expecting.

I'm more excited about this than I was about Teen Titans.

(although Green Lantern appears to have no teenage representative).

I've always thought it was weird that GL never had a teen understudy, but they've really developed Blue Beetle III to fill that niche.

\*o*/ I think I need to start watching cartoons again. Black Aqualad gets my seal of aPROVal.

And I can just hear it: there will be a mass ensemble of fangirls who only wish Drake was five+ years older (I don't blame them an iota).
