Debate whether the Nintendo DS should be considered a Gameboy DS.
And dont say ,"OMG U R so not L337, Nintendo not say DS=GB," or anything similar to that.

I'd say it is using a timeline of additions

GB ->GB Light->GBC ->GBA ->GBASP
Original Backligt Color Smaller, L+R Folding

GBA Micro ->GBDS ->GBDS Lite
Smaller Touch Screen, X+Y Smaller, Brighter

As you see nothing advances more than two steps, in my opinion the DS not being a GB, is like a GBA not being a GB.

Didn't a Nintendo official explicitly state that it's NOT a Game Boy? That it was the third Nintendo pillar? Wouldn't this be like debating whether cheese was a type of milk?

Oh, didn't know that they said it was completely different.

The Gameboy brand has been phased out, the DS is unrelated to it completely and this has been explicitly stated from over a year before the DS even came out. There is no debate to be had.

They stated that it wasn't a Gameboy so that if it failed, then the Gameboy name would remain flawless and they could keep making new ones. DS =/= Gameboy.

Originally the DS was supposed to appeal to casual gamers and a third Gameboy was supposed to be made for "hardcore" gamers. The DS did so well the third Gameboy was canceled and the planned titles were given to the DS instead. They were going to be different, but as far as I'm concerned, the DS is a Gameboy. In the same way the GameCube could be considered the "Nintendo 4" or whatever. It's the successor to the Gameboy, even if it wasn't originally intended to be.

I always refer to it as a Gameboy when ever I take it somewhere.

Eh.

There was no third Gameboy to be cancelled. The possibility of a future Gameboy floated around for around two and a half years after the release of the DS to see if they were going to do one, but in the end it was decided to just stick with the DS.

It's probable that the DS itself will now take on the naming strategy of the Gameboy for future iterations, with the new systems being called DS: etc. Similar to the DS Lite, I guess. Either way, the brand name itself is now as recognisable as the Gameboy and is likely to be utilised for some time.

But really, it's no more a Gameboy itself than the N64 was the next NES. It's a brandname that continued on for 2 further iterations, but is no longer used. Seems pretty silly to be calling it something that it's not.

Eh, officially, it's not a Game Boy, but I've always considered it one. In my opinion, any handheld system from Nintendo could be considered a Game Boy, even if it's not one. Who knows, maybe they didn't call it one to appeal to a female audience?

The box says Nintendo DS, not Gameboy DS. Pretty straight forward to me.

It's name semantics really. It's not a Gameboy officially, but it has a similar purpose to the previous Gameboys and took the place of them in the end.

But it's really not worth it to debate because it matters so little. Nintendo did state it wasn't a Gameboy, so there you go.
