Well I didn't really feel that his topic fit in the battle center because this team choice is based on playing through the game, not going against other players. Also I browsed through the Video game section and this really didn't fit in it in my opinion as the polls there were based on personal preference rather than situational.

After picking up pokemon again recently with Soul Silver I played through and got the 1st 7 badges but found myself horribly underleveled after blazing through the story (just 13 hours) and unbalanced to face clair or the elite four. So I decided to start over.

So on to my actual question...

For the purposes of playing through the story (Johto and Kanto) would Heracross or Scyther be a better long-term party member? I would normally automatically go Scyther and evolve it into a Scizor, but a consistant Wi-Fi connection is a problem for me so scheduled trade times is an issue.

I only have the 1st 2 badges so far in my restarted file but I already have both (lvl 5 Heracross and lvl 14 Scyther) so I want to make an early decision as to level either to appropriate levels for story battles as I found the first time I would level pokemon for 20 or so levels then pick up a new one at lower levels and battle new trainers with the lower level and ultimately waste all the experience gained and new experience that could have gone to other Pokemon in the party.

If it at all helps this is my party I hope to have assembled by the time I face Clair (where I started over last time).

Crobat
Typhlosion
Ampharos
Heracross/Scyther
Lapras
Umbreon

Enough of my ongoing bantering, everyone's input is most welcome.

Scyther, because of Heracross' x4 weakness to the ever common Flying type.

That's true but I have Ampharos to cover that weakness, but Scyther's Rock/Electric/Ice weakness is a major concern for me which is a big sticking point for Clair and the Elite Four.

Since this deals solely with the game, this DOES belong in the Video Games section. Moving.

I thoroughly enjoy using Heracross.

I think it should be VS Pinsir though.

While the main decision is effectiveness in long-term and type variety (pokemon with more than one type), aesthetics come into play as well. And to be perfectly honest and no disrespect to any fans of Pinsir, I think it's fugly.

Also, you can evolve Scyther into a Scizor later, and that only has one weakness.

I'm going to have to go with Scyther. You can always trade it to evolve it into Scizor (provided you gave it the Metal Coat beforehand).

Well, for starters, you can look up Scyther and Heracross here. Make sure you look over their attacks and stats before you decide which one you plan to stick with.

Anyway, both are very solid Pokemon. In my opinion, for in-game purposes, Scyther may be the better choice; assuming that you'll be able to evolve it. If you won't be able to, I'd say Heracross might be the better choice, but regardless, Scyther is still a strong Pokemon.

Heracross can compete with Ubers if trained correctly, Megahorn is pretty much devastating to most of Will & Karen's E4 parties as well.

By trained properly, do you mean EV training?

Heracross just for a type variety on your team. You already have a Crobat, you don't need a Scyther now. And having a Fighting type can be useful.

Heracross is better in my opinion as its part fighting - better move pool

If you don't plan to evolve the Scyther, then half your team will have a glaring weakness to Rock.

not really thread worthy.

also, this could go in the in-game RMT thread in BS&T section
