I just recently completed my pokedex in pokemon Y, and I was curious to hear other peoples stories about dex completion. It doesn't matter which game, or if you've completed it, or on your way to completing it. If you have any interesting (Or boring) dex stories, feel free to post 'em here.

The most challenging for me is the 5th Gen because that's the only Gen that I did not play legally. So all the pokes that I collected in that Gen cannot be transferred in my Pokemon Y.

Of course the legends and event pokes that are so difficult to obtain are also challenging. The painful part is that I cannot actually own them since most of it are just touch trade(especially for Mew, Celebi, Arceus and Diancie).

But I managed to complete my dex in that way.

Most boring? Waiting time to have my Deposited Pokemon to be traded in the GTS.

Most glorious moment? When I got Reshiram and Zekrom through legal trade and its OT actually let me own them.

There's also one time that I got so overwhelmed because I got my Moltres and Articuno by just depositing breeded Beldum holding a Lum Berry.

There you go.

toke me many hours of trading pokemon on the gts and without pokebank out anywhere but japan I had to get a chimchar from the gts and breed it several times over to get other bank exclsuive pokemon and friend safari pokemon (people will trade anything but legendary pokemon for a starter) The best moment someone on the gts wanted a yanmega for thunuras and a friend gave me his lugia to use for trading so I could get the legendary pokemon

You're actually correct!! Everyone will trade anything for the starter. I was one of them. It took me a lot of time just to complete them. And when I got my Treeko and Piplup, I just did the same thing, I bred them and trade for the remaining starter that I don't have.

Funny that you all used starters. While I'm not completely done yet (because I want a living dex at the same time, and am still missing some event leggies), I mainly used HA Grimers to complete all the GTS trades. They were pretty rare back then because the Bank was Japan-only, and I received one from my friend for MM useage. They really flew through the GTS, so it was fairly easy in the beginning.

My Pokedex completion was a mix of a ton of breeding, Pokebank transfer, and GTS trades. In the years prior to XY, I'd nearly completed the Unova Pokedex, missing only the event legends. My collection in Unova wasn't a living Dex, but I'd registered almost every Pokemon, so transferring the lot took out a good hunk of the National Pokedex. Breeding those transfers got almost the rest of it out of the way, and progress was supplemented by the GTS. I do remember the very moment it was fully completed... I was missing only one Pokemon, a Swadloon. I didn't have a Leavanny or a Sewaddle, and I was on vacation with no wifi. Before leaving, I left some request in the GTS for one. While I was there, my family happened to go to McDonald's... free wifi. Swadloon gets into my box. Completion get!

I happen to know part of SirReginaldVonBartlesby's story... it involved chain trading with me for almost half a day. It started in the afternoon and finally wrapped up at midnight. I got a few rarities in return, including a shiny Genesect and a 6IV Japanese Ditto, so it was grueling but worth it. For me, at least...

The only one I completed was the Hoenn dex in Sapphire. Some of the more memorable pokemon to get:

-Treecko/Grovyle/Sceptile. I actually put this one off for a long time just out of laziness. It was still sort of funny to see it being one of the last pokemon I evolved to complex the pokedex
-Milotic. I actually thought for a second that I hadn't been able to max out Feebas's beauty and I was really disappointed that I would have to breed a new one and start over. But it turns out you had to also level it up to evolve! Huge sigh of relief
-Chimecho. Took SO LONG to find!
-Corsola, if only for the confusing fact that you can't fish one up from Pacifidlog Town even though the game makes it quite clear that the town is on top of a Corsola colony. Seriously, why move them to EverGrande "City" when you already have a town themed around it?!

I was actually goung to mention that! I just checked the page 5 minutes ago (so many responses for one day!) and was going to comment on your help. seriously, BlackOsprey is a nice person, and a helluva pokemon player. thanks, man.

As for the rest of my story, it started about 3 months ago. I had (Horrifyingly enough) grown bored of pokemon at the time. I decided, to pique my intrest to complete the pokedex. In that week alone, I went from 220 caught to 370. I worked at it a few weeks longer, got to around 450, and quit for about a month and a half. then I joined bulbagarden forums, asked for help, and the rest is history. once again, thanks, BlackOsprey. I didn't tell you at the time, but you made that the best birthday ever. But since I don't want to end on a sappy note,
(EXPLOSION NOISE!!!!!!!) woo.

EDIT: Just figured it was worth mentioning, (Since you guys keep brining it up) I didn't put pokemon on GTS to complete my dex.

I'm almost done completing my pokedex. I only miss a few first stage pokemon which I can easily breed but haven't had the time to do it yet, plus all the event legendaries except Victini and Darkrai.

I finally finished my Pokédex 100% for the first time in X, just after the Bank was released. I dedicated a group of numbered Bank boxes to it (1-30, 31-60, etc.) so it made it easy to keep track of what I did and didn't have. I was helped a lot by the fact that I've kept all of my old games and handhelds, and also by the fact that I spent a large amount of time in 4th Gen trading lv.100 legendaries for random shinies, and then trading the shinies for event legends. (It did take a while to receive a Deoxys that wasn't clearly hacked, though.) I even traded away one of my self-obtained shinies, which I now regret.

I have to say, though, Snorunt and Spheal both gave me a surprisingly hard time. I'd forgotten that Shoal Cave even existed.

Anyway, as soon as I finally caught them all, Diancie was revealed. -_-

And I don't actually have a live Dex; just the Pokédex entries. I plan to fill in all the gaps in Omega Ruby.

Completing the Dex in Emerald wasn't terribly hard; it just required a lot of trading and breeding. I wouldn't complete another Poke Dex until Black 2 and that was to get the Oval and Shiny Charms. Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh and Unova were relatively simple but it was Hoenn that gave me the most trouble. I had very few Hoenn Pokemon on my copy of Pearl or Platinum so I had to port them over to Pearl then Transfer them. And since we could only send over six at a time to Sinnoh, it took about a solid week to get everything over.

I've yet to complete the Dex in Kalos; I just haven't had the time.

First time I completed the dex was in FireRed, but only the Kanto Dex though. I wouldn't complete the dex until X and Y. One of the major events in the completion was when Bank was released only in Japan back in December. I managed to nab a Snivy for an Ekans and started breeding that to get the other Starters and Bank exclusives. Then next major event was when my friend lent me his 3DS so I could clone. I cloned his Yveltal and uploaded it in GTS a couple of times to get the Bank exclusive legends since it wasn't out anywhere else but Japan. When I asked for a Kyurem, I got a hacked 6IV one, so cloned that to trade for the remaining legends and it would get accepted in literally seconds. Then to end that weekend, I was able to get a Bank Celebi from a passerby by trading a Rayquaza I got off the GTS. When Bank came out in US, I transferred some of my Event exclusive legendaries. Then here comes summer. I would farm Dittos from Friend Safari and throw them in GTS for Dex Fillers. I didn't put 100% of my effort into completing it at that time since I was also really addicted to Animal Crossing. Few weeks after school started, I was able to finally complete my dex and get the Shiny Charm. However, while completing my dex, I was also working on my Living Dex. I was also able to complete it a day after I completed the Pokedex. Now, my living dex is sitting in my Bank so I can just borrow someone's game and complete their dex for them.

Outside of trying to do some MM breeding, Y has been the closest I've ever come to completing the National Dex, currently at 631. I still have a ways to go, and since I now need Phione to complete the dex, I'm a bit stuck on that. I'd use the GTS, but the stuff they ask for in exchange is ridiculous (Arceus for a Snorunt!? Mew for a Electabuzz!? Give me a break!), so I'm forced to rely mostly on breeding and PokeBank to fill in some of the gaps. But I'm determined to finally complete the National Dex, even though some of my resources are limited.

If you're still in need of Phione when you near completion, I can do a tradeback with you.

The closest that I got to completion is my current Pokémon Y, at 631. I'll wait until I get Black 2, and one of ORAS, and transfer the remaining uncaught Hoenn/Unova/Legendary Pokémon via Bank.

I made an account just to say this lol but this morning I completed the living pokédex on Y! It's a sweet feeling. I missed all of gen III-V and picked Pokémon back up with VI, and started getting into the VGC scene and crazy breeding. Between trading on the GTS to get the random fillers and then mass breeding 5-6iv competitives for legend trade fodder, simply using Pokemon Showdown's trade chat I was able to trade for every legendary (literally every one) over a matter of a few weeks. The only hacked mon I have to my knowledge is a 6iv shiny Deoxys (obvious) so I'm still looking for another one, but everything else is legitimate including Mew, Arceus, Victini, Jirachi, all the other event ones etc.

I also did what someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, labeling boxes 1-30, 31-60 etc. and have all of them filled with every single Pokémon. There's only 6 boxes leftover for that which I have reserved for my competitives and shinies. But having the full dex and now the shiny charm is just an awesome thing to have. :) And it was actually far easier than I thought to accomplish; it's really just a matter of finding people willing to part with their legitimate event pokes.

Congrats, man. And welcome to the forum! You'll love it here.

Did it only once, in Gold, and even that without Celebi.
Ha, I remember that catching last several hardest Pokemon felt like I was some hitman crossing out his targets out of the list. Met with completely anticlimatic finale, thought, as the last ones to complete the Pokedex were Johto starters hatching from eggs.
