Hey, I'll dive in! Diamondshipping is one of my favorite shippings. I like it because it explains Ash's dad in a reasonable manner. (Due to Gary being Oak's grandson, Eldershipping does not).

I still need to read that fic. I'm sure it's great!

Personally,I like to believe that Gio left Delia either when she was pregnant (with Ash) or when Ash was still a baby.And then Gio went on to form Team Rocket.I don't like the idea of Gio just inheriting TR so I don't really buy all that Madame Boss stuff.

I don't watch much of the anime, but I think that any episode involving both Ash and Giovanni is canon-by-association. But that's just me.

How about Mewtwo Returns? A lot of people use that to disprove the shipping since "Ash and Gio are in the same frame"
Being in the same frame does not equal being seen, however... at that point, Gio wouldn't be able to see Ash, he was behind Brock's Onix.

Right. Although Ash and Giovanni have never met face to face, Ash quite clearly knows Giovanni, and that is very well established. I'd be curious to know whether or not Giovanni knows of Ash...

The scenes that Ash and Gio share in Mewtwo Returns are VERY short,not to mention there's a bunch of crap distracting them and they're pretty far apart from one another.Ash may remember Giovanni,but he was in a big a rush to help out Mewtwo and Gio never had an opportunity to have a good look at Ash.But when all is said and done,Gio ends up having no memory of Ash thanks to Mewtwo's mindwipe.


The only two people who will surely remember Giovanni is Brock and Misty.They battled him for awhile before Gio went off in his airship to search for Mewtwo.

Why would Misty and Brock know Giovanni? It's not like Misty and Brock knew who every Gym leader in Kanto was. They were as surprised as Ash was when they met the other Gym leaders back in kanto

The anime has never really been clear. I mean, Brock didn't know Misty, and he is probably just bluffing in the Cerulean Gym since he called the leader a "he". Unless he was thinking of Misty's dad. (Adan?) Anyway, that's probably for another thread.

So have there been actual hints outside of Pokémon Live?

Really, I think Diamondshippers generally consider any hints in the anime to have occured Season 1 (Battle for the Badge, Evolution Solution, etc), since Ash and Giovanni really haven't had the opportunity to be in the same scene in the past. Battle for the Badge is the big one, as far as I'm concerned, considering that if Togepi could return to Misty via the window outside Gio's office, he could have easily glanced out there and noticed Ash, thus making a run for it (Mewtwo emergency, my ass.) Course, that only generally applies to my "still together, but apart for Ash's sake" philosophy... that's the problem with Diamondshipping, we're rare, so it's hard to have one unified belief down regarding the shipping. I mean, I'd do a Bulbapedia article on it, me being one of the biggest and most well-known shippers in the fandom (well, the fandom on BMG and SPP at least), but it's just too hard.

Even though I'm not a fan of diamondshipping per se, I am a fan of believing they had a past. In my fics that's how they are always treated, as two people who split up when they're lifelong goals differed beyond recognition.

I have a feeling the writers have been toying with this idea, though, precisely because they've kept Gio and Ash out of the same space for the most part. Personally, if I believe Diamondshipping, Eldershipping, and (what was delia & spencer hale again?) -- then Delia has really gotten around. Ahem.
