Variety reported this morning news that America’s The CW network has greenlit “The Graysons,” a pilot for a new live-action television series based on Dick Grayson, the first of Batman’s sidekicks, courtesy of the Executive Producers of “Smallville” and “Supernatural.”

According to the report, the producers have "come up with an original take" on the character whereby he confronts challenges concerning "first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up" before becoming partners with Batman and assuming the iconic mantle of Robin, similar to the approach taken with Clark Kent/Superman in “Smallville.” Variety also indicates the character will be known as “D.J.,” rather than his traditional name of “Dick.”

The “Graysons” series would be the network’s second stab at the Batman mythos, following the widely derided “Birds of Prey."

Execs Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson have also written “Tell Me” and “But I’m A Cheerleader,” respectively, and will work with filmmaker/producer McG ("Terminator: Salvation").

This just...smells bad. Smallville was one thing, but I don't think we really need a superhero teen drama that lacks the superhero aspect.

That's moronic, you can't do a story about a teenage Dick Grayson before meeting Batman. He spent most of his life WITH Batman. It'd be like doing a series about Superman's life on Krypton - it has a very firmly set expiration date if it's to make any sense at all.

Just a pilot's confirmed at this point, right? Maybe it'll be like that Aquaman show and never come to be... I would be more willing to look into this if it weren't for the fact that Smallville turned to crap over time (thanks, Lana).

He was a circus performer. They're going to build a show around that?

Not to mention that he has to have his parents dead and be in Batman's hands before he turns 18 or 17 if the show is to make ANY sense. And that's already stretching it, because he was really around 8-10 when his parents were killed. And if they want to make it a drama about a high school circus performer - that gives them 4 years tops. And don't circuses travel everywhere, so how are they going to build up a high school supporting cast? Nothing about this makes any sense.

LOL ... nothing about that whole plot makes sense. I'd rather see one about young Barbara than "DJ". At least her father is busy.

Circus folk. C'mon, the son of the fire-eater. The daughter of two of the clowns. The son of the...bearded lady...or...I dunno. And, by having him go from town-to-town, it makes a little more sense that he's constantly running into trouble (and I'm sure we'll eventually see a young Speedy...probably shooting up).

And it is an "original take" on the character. So...it COULD be good. Right...?

Or, if they want to stay away from Birds of Prey (I liked it well enough, but...what do I know?), they could do Tim Drake. Admittedly, no circus folk there, but he had a fairly normal childhood.

I like Dick Grayson just fine, but... WTF. How are they gonna do this? o_O;; He's best off at Nightwing... I couldn't really give a crap as far as their "original take" goes. But we'll see. *shrug*

I agree. Young Barbara FTW.
