Did anyone here believe Pokemon would only be a fad?

A series that lasts one to five years then fades away into the video game underground.

I never understood that. It's a Nintendo series. Is Mario ending? Zelda? Metroid? On the other side of the pool, is Sonic ending? Don't answer that last one.

Did something about it seem too repetitive? Heck, look at Final Fantasy or Tamagotchi.

It's still not a worldwide franchise that has collapsed the world to its very foundations or anything. You seem to imply that Pokémon is recognised by everybody in the entire world, which is sadly not the case.

However, the format the games are released in is increasingly repetitive and I do agree that I did not expect it would continue so long with such an alarming success rate.

not really, 'cause most of us back then were just kids, and... kids don't really *think* about how successful things will be and such...

When did I imply that? Is Metroid recognizable? No.

Pikachu is one of the most recognizable characters out there, maybe more so then Pac Man.

Just by suggesting that it's more than a mere franchise currently. Sorry, I think I may have misinterpreted your post.

When I was growing up, I knew from the start that Pokemon would become really popular, and not a fad. Turns out I was right.

The second I heard that there were more Pokemon besides the 151 that currently existed, I knew that Pokemon was going to stay for a long while. If it looked like it was loosing popularity, just make more Pokemon.

Well, I didn't really think about it when I was eight or nine years old, but looking back I'm amazed that such a simple game became the 2nd most successful gaming franchise.

I think the adults of 14 years ago thought it would be. Oh boy were they wrong.

Nope. I knew I'd love it for the rest of my life. And what do you know? 12 years later I'm still here. :p

And so is Pokemon. Knew it'd be here forever. <3 I knew Yugioh would die. Lol Motorcycles... they killed themselves. xD

Oh, absolutely not. I was too young to remember the days when Pokemon fever was everywhere. I got my Blue version secondhand. I got into Pokemon a little after it had already ceased being cool.

Ah-hem. *cough*
The motorcycles are a recent thing. And yes, I will agree with you that perhaps Yu-Gi-Oh! has decreased in quality of ideas somewhat over the years, but this thread is about Pokemon.

I was actually averted to Pokemon for a while because I thought it would get too popular. Unfortunately, I'm now in the ranks of those who contribute to its popularity.

I don't know if I expected there to be more generations beyond the first one, but I definitely expected it to stick around for a while.

I remember TV Guide did a cover story about Pokémon in 1999 or so, and they just completely trashed it - said it was shallow and incomprehensible, full of ridiculous concepts, and existed only to sap the money of foolish kids who didn't know any better. But the article concluded with a paragraph telling stressed-out parents not to worry, likening it to the passing fancies of Beanie Babies and Tamagotchis and saying "it'll all be over soon."

It's eleven years later. Looks like Nintendo had the last laugh, didn't they?
