Did anyone think Dawn was going to capture a lot of Pokemon at first?

When Dawn captured Pachirisu at only the 15th episode of DP, I honestly thought they were going to make her like Kanto Ash, where she was going to capture a lot of pokemon in the same region.

I mean she had 3 Pokemon by the 15th episode already! However after that, and then the Buizel/Aipom trade, her rate of captures slowed to a crawl.

Swinub was the last Pokemon she actually captured in the tradition sense, as Cyndaquil was an egg given as a prize by Lyra, and Togekiss was simply given to her. DP is ending and Dawn only has a team of 6 pokemon, which would have been 7 had Ambipom not been released.

Any thoughts on that? Its almost as if Dawn got off to a false start.

To be honest, I think Hikari in general got off to a false start.

She started off as a rather interesting and cute character--getting the first few episodes to herself, getting a full ending to herself, and just in general, almost becoming the freaking main character (remember when people actually disliked her taking so much of Satoshi's spotlight away?), but eventually the newness wore off.

After the writers got us to like her, they stopped caring. They only needed Hikari to capture those first few pokemon so we'd warm up to her and so they could also get their mascots out for display. Once that was done? Pft, who cares! They love her, they love the pokemon! STOP WORKING SO HARD EVERYBODY!

Had they kept that type of effort up through the whole series, I think Hikari would've definitely caught more pokemon (and in general been a better character), but it's like they put all the effort in right away and then just gave up.

Not to mention they clearly gave up on Kenny and Nando after the initial DP episodes, hence their lack of appearances and their "quickie" final appearances toward the end of DP.

I also feel as if Dawn's character felt like it was going to play out in a different direction than it did, where did all that early DP hype go? It really feels like its all gone.

Quite frankly, I prefer when they keep the number of captures low and focus on the pokémon more... so no. That she got 8 pokémon throughout Sinnoh was even too much in my opinion. I was cool with Ambipom being released (not the how it was released though...) and Togekiss was just uneeded.

Sounds to me like you just had certain expectations that didn't go as the writers planned out.

As for more Pokemon, why would she need so many? A team of 6 is fine, and I'd hate to see a few of them go to waste like Krabby and Muk did back in Kanto.

This. I don't see the big deal of Dawn having a lot of Pokemon with her. Dawn just having her team of 6 Pokemon is fine.

6 pokemon is ideal for Dawn.Even Ash don't catch pokemon more than 5 anymore...

Dawn got Pachi in ep 19, not 15
Also, anyone who seriously expected Ash or Dawn to get more than 6-7 Poké by DP's end was crazy... AG made it clear that the writers realized Kanto's "catch 235325 Poké and neglect them" thing was ridiculous, thanks Arceus DP won't repeat Kanto's mistakes

And... Dawn IS the star... together with Ash
Let's not even start with this now... -_-

Her current team is fine, it would be better if Ambipom was there instead of Togekiss.

I agree, I don't like that some of Ash's pokemon were put in the backseat in Kanto.

Plus, with Dawn having less pokemon, each pokemon on her team was able to develop more IMO.

Overall, I think the writers did a good job with putting her team together.

I disagree, I like Togekiss better :)

Yes, I did.
The writers were establishing Dawn as a "co-star," not the "secondary main character" that Misty and May were established as. They were trying to make Dawn so strikingly similar to Ash when he first started. In her first 35 episodes, Dawn owned 4 pokemon and battled an Elite 4.

Also, may I add that Dawn only used 8 individual pokemon, not including evolutions and lent pokemon, this region. This was the same number of individual pokemon that Ash used, excluding the pokemon he will be using for the Sinnoh League of course.

Sounds to me like you just had certain expectations that didn't go as the writers planned out.

When DP first started, people were acting like Dawn was going to have a much bigger connection with legendaries than just seeing the psychic pixie at the start, or that she was going to battle more Gym leaders after Maylene, or that she was going to be in more major tournaments after the tag battle, or that she and Paul would have this rivalry on the side because she snapped at him in Roark's Gym, or that Dawn would meet Misty, or that Dawn would change her dress in every contest, or that Dawn would climb mountains and declare the meaning of life itself.

In short, Dawn's character was very overhyped by the writers themselves and the fandom. Her character really just went down the coordinator route as expected, rather than being that, "action heroine girl" people thought she would be. Even in the movies she's casted aside.

She should have gotten Cyndaquil and Togekiss earlier, I didn't like how it became all about Momoswine and Piplup, I think her team was handled poorly.

Very true, I wanted to focus on Buneary and the other members of her team, but it was always Piplup or Mamoswine. It would've been cool if Buneary evolved into a Lopunny, that would make its crush on Pikachu awkward, though.

I honestly didn't give any thought to how many Pokemon Dawn would capture. At most I probably nnoticed that she caught her first Pokemon faster than May, but thats it.

I think the problem is they had Dawn get off to a false start. Pretty much everything I (and a lot of other people thought), Dawn was going to be back in early DP was proven wrong. Remember when people thought Dawn was going to argue with Ash all the time on the main cast? (because of their argument in Nando's debut ep)

I also find it amusing there is so much fanfiction about Dawn/Paul, when in the anime the two characters have almost zero interaction.

Also, come to think of it, Mamoswine was only Dawn's full evolution. Togekiss doesn't count as it was given to her, and Ambi was released.

Shame she didn't get more evolutions either. Mamoswine just wasn't enough.

I wasn't too suprised that she ended up with only seven Pokemon. I doubted it would be much different than May.

I didn't think that she was off to a false start. She did come off as knowledgable about Pokemon in the beginning of her journey. It didn't surprise me one bit. Plus, Buneary and Pachirisu aren't all that hard to capture.

I don't know what this has to do with the topic but I agree.

This.

I really like Dawn's team. My favorite. But the only problem I have with it is how it was handled.

*Shrugs* Didn't really think too much about it actually. But by the time she acquired her fifth Pokemon, I did believe she'd get another one anyway.
