Notice how some episodes within the anime look kinda different like how sometimes the characters eyes make look different like wider or longer?

Like in the XY series the episode "Clemont's Got A Secret"

And "Corni and Lucario! The Secret of Mega Evolution"

Look at how the characters look especially their eyes and compare it to other episodes.

I wonder if this is common within other anime series.

Of course the style differs from episode to episode. You have to remember that multiple animation teams work on multiple episodes. Can you imagine 1 team working on each episode, week after week after week (not including the occasional breaks)?

It happens with every series. Part of the fun is getting to learn about the different animation supervisors and key animators' styles. Chief Animation Supervisor Toshihito Hiro'oka (the character designer) keeps the animation supervisors relatively consistent, but small things slip through considering the short amount of time available for every episode's production (not to mention just because an animator gets work it doesn't mean he is particularly skilled). Iwane Masa'aki is the most skilled of the regular animators due to his ability to time action well and create movement even at spectacular angles. Iwane also specializes in making cute and funny faces. Other than Iwane and the occasional cuts from Tamagawa Akihiro the look of Pokemon is mostly kept homogenized. A series like Naruto Shippuuden has more variety thanks to Series Director Date Hayato being more willing to allow spectacular animators and directors experiment. Yamashita Hiroyuki, Sessha Gorou with Kouda Masayuki, Tsuru Toshiyuki with Suzuki Hirofumi, and Wakabayashi Atsushi episodes all have their own unique looks that help bring the series alive.

I've noticed with the XY series that the different animation styles aren't as noticeable. I'm not sure why, but it's not like the first three series where it was pretty obvious episode-to-episode.

That being said, it seems like next week's episode will be the exception as it's clearly Akihiro Tamagawa's style. Not that this is a bad thing, but still.

This is likely due to the chief animation supervisor having a heavier hand in correcting episodes. The job of the chief animation supervisor is to create a consistently between episodes. The animation supervisor's job is to create consistency within the episodes.
