Oh yeah and Abra + Kadabra = Abrakadabra.

It's nothing special,Pokemon are full of such things.

Mew=New.
Well, it is the New Species Pokemon.
and Mewtwo, so i guess it equals Newtwo.

Yeah. Half, if not most or all, of the names are puns. That's the point. I think there's even a trope for this, too.

Here's a classic:Ekans and Arbok are snake and kobra spelled backwards.

And my favourite:Chansey=chance as it used to be quite rare.

Everyone posting here is telling me things I never heard off 0_o, didn't know alot of the names were puns.

gible= nible
gabite= bite
garchomp= chomp

articuno= uno
zapdos= dos
moltres= tres

The thing about the original poster's discovery, however, is that it exists in the Japanese names as well. (Digda and Dugtrio) Knowing the creators, it's almost certainly completely intentional. :p

im sure it was too. anyway this thread was pretty much meaningless, not to be rude, it was only to confirm one thing. can we at least change the title so we can add more to it?

Wasn't it obvious? And it's not just Pokemon names, either. All the Gym Leaders, save Blue, have puntastic names.

And cities,too.They are usually named by colours:
Viridian City-Viridis is green in latin
Saffron City
Cinnabar island
Fuschia City
Indigo Plaetau
Cerulean City etc.

or they are named by plants:
Azalea Town
Goldenrod City
Cherrygrove City
New Bark Town
Olivine City etc.

as seen here by the gif on the Bulbapedia page about the move Flash, its been known by someone since gen 3.
