I finally saw the dub today.

Being a fan of the original Japanese version, I was very pleased with some aspects of the show.

I really enjoyed a lot of the voices, but Max's dad kinda weirded me out more than he did in the original, and some voices were too...weird...Eric Stuart was definately not at his best (James and Seto Kaiba were his best in my opinion).

Most of the Pokémon dub VAs return here, and some others come in, doing a good job.

The theme song's scene placement and music weren't too great. Sure, it was the same singer as the 4Kids Pokémon dub, but when you get him to rap, bad things happen. I prefer that techno thing the original version had.

The BGM in this was...arguably BETTER than the Japanese version!

What do you all think?

I enjoyed it. it's cute! I didn't think I'd like it but I did. People are so busy comparing it to Pokemon, Digimon and a host of other shows that they aren't looking at it on its own. The characters are an oddly matched band of people, but it works somehow. The CGI dinos are hard to get used to, but that element manages to work, too. The dub is great, and they show uses real global locations which is pretty cool.

lol, I just saw it for the first time too and I came in here to talk about the same thing. I think that they did a pretty good job with this title. I just wonder how they would have done with Duel Masters now. That series probably should have caught on.

Hopefully, like I said in the other topic, SEGA will bring the arcade games out.. or at least some of the video games. (Then they can start bringing other card based arcade games like Mushi King and Sangokushi Taisen :)... *had ulterior motive*)

wait a minute, are you guys saying that kids actually did a good job with that show? i didn't catch it, but i really find that hard to believe that their dinosaur king dub could possibly have been good.

This is one of the best new shows. Which character does Eric Stuart voice? It's nice to hear some of the original Pokemon VAs again, especially Jessie's.

There's a character who sounds a bit like James in the Alpha Gang.

And yes, uncutpokemon, 4Kids did a good job with this one, but the theme song coulda been better and there were the usual timecuts (which doin't really effect me to be honest) and some bad voices.

Yeah. The theme song kinda reminded me of Mummies Alive the first time I heard it.

The theme song gets addictive... lol

"Dinosaur King is what you wanna be! Make your move, c'mon and MAKE YOUR MOVE!"

Hehe, I love when they're all dancin' in the intro XD

Max is so huggleable. xDD And I love Chomp~

"Dinosaur King is what you wanna be! Make your move, c'mon and MAKE YOUR MOVE!"
Makes me think of YGO. xDD -shot-

I saw the first three episodes raw on youtube (couldn't find sub episodes) and the first two Dub episodes episodes on the 4Kidstv website.

I start with my review of the series itself (meaning the original). I found it to be very underwhelming. And not just because Dinosaur King is a Kodomo Anime (I've liked other Kodomo Anime like Pokemon). It could be because it just seems like a mesh between other Anime, such as Yugioh, Digimon, Rockman Exe (Megaman NT Warrior), and even Pokemon. It could also be because it's based off of a videogame, rather than a Manga storyline, which I generally prefer.

Looking at the episodes themselves, there doesn't seem t be much of a story, there's very little character developement, and thus far, none of the villains in the Alpha Gang seem like a real threat. But it's still young in the series, so that could easily change over time. I'm also not very big on the CGI getting inserted into the series. Plus, I almost never complain about this element when comes to the original Japanese version of an Anime, but the music was pretty lousy. The only music I actually liked was the opening theme song.

And now, the Dub:

I was actually pleasantly surprised after I watched the first episode. With acception to Pokemon, this is actually 4Kids best Dub so far. But that really isn't saying much at all.

I'll start with the theme song. It certainly wasn't as bad as the One Piece Rap, but I could have done with something much more different. t really sounded like something that would get used in a Burger King Kids Club or Chucky Cheese commercial.

Many of the original elements were actually kept intact. 4Kids actually kept the title card sequence, which they haven't done for any of their other Anime, accept for Pokemon. Although they did use different music. And I don't know if anyone else noticed, but I think 4Kids actually kept some of the original music intact, although the discussion over at Toonzone is that th music was completely raplace. It matters not, since the music in either version is pretty lousy IMO.

As for translations, I can't tell myself, but it was pretty much dead-on from what people said on Toonzone (D Dubbs. Although I've heard that 4Kids still inserts lame dialog, bad puns, and jokes that just fall flat.

Now with the voice acting. The good news is that the Dinosaur King voice acting is just as good as the Pokemon voice acting. The bad news is that the Dinosaur King voice acting is just as good as the Pokemon voice acting. In fact, all of the main voice actors form Pokemon are in Dinosaur King. And it seems the producers simply cast in place for nostalgic reasons relating to Pokemon (which they lost the rights to last year). Now some hardcore fans of the currect voice cast (particularly their work on Pokemon), but I find it to be rather unoriginal and confusing. Take Veronica Taylor for example. She was cast as the Max Taylor, the lead character (does anyone besides me see the irony of the main character's last name being the same as the VA that plays him) of the series. He sounds almost exactly like Ash Ketchum did (before the VA switch). And it's such a shame that somebody as talented as Rachael Lillis does very to distinguish Ursela of the Alpha Gang for her Jessie voice. But the bright side, Eric Stuart actually makes good use of his Dr Z voice. IMO, this is actually his only good and unquely original voice he's given to a character since Brock.

Also, I pretty sure 4Kids throws in their usual standard paint edits. I don't them offhand, ther than one I'd like to defend. There was a point in the original in which Dr Z's rear end was showing. 4Kids painted underwear over that. People over at Toonzone were actually complaining about. But seriously, this actually something they should have expected, given FCC standards for Saturday morning television shows. And it wasn't that badly done IMO. Although I didn't think the joke was very unny in either version.

Then the second episode rolled, and the Dubbing quality seemed to take a downturn (according to discussions). The translation wasn't quite as accurate as the first episode, and I could tell that they were BS the dialog on several occasions just by listening. Take this lovely example:

Dr Taylor: Hello Dr Owen. Dug up anything new?
Dr Owen:I found a funnybone. Hehehe. What's all the fossil about?
Dr Taylor: Hehehe. Dinosaur jokes!
Dr Taylor and Dr Owen: What-makes-dinosaurs-xstinked? Not-taking-a-bath-we-think. Dig it. Hahahahaha.
Dr Taylor: Think! Stink! Smelly dinosaurs. Yep, it's still funny.

Yeah, I'm rolling over with laughter just thinking about it [/sarcasm].

Lastly, I want to address something else that's been brought up in discussion. Some have said this might just be the series to give 4Kids a comeback. I highly doub it, for all the reasons I've listed up above. You have the fact that it's not really that good to begin with, the blatent homage that 4Kids pays to the Pokemon series, and the fact that the Dubbing quality took a downturn in the second episode. And I'll add the fact that it didn't even do that well on 4Kidstv last weekend. It was the third worst performing show on Saturday, September 8 on 4Kidstv (the two worst performing shows airing before 8:00). And that station doesn't even have the best ratings to begin with.

Dinosaur King, in its original form, is very cute, and I don't expect much more from a kodomo anime.

The dub made me run away as soon as I heard the opening theme. Not like the fact that the main character sounds too much like Ash helped much...

on that note, I can't help but wonder why the hell Sega's still supporting 4kids. Didn't they just can the voice actors from working on the Sonic games?

^^^ Who knows, maybe because it's just convenient or maybe because of the same reason nintendo did after pokemon... but yeah, even though Sonic X was no piece of work to begin with in it's original form, the 4Kids dub was not too hot, IMO, so I can understand why you might say that (too). I think Sonic X was a success though, ratings-wise... didn't they extend the series in the US?

Well... I mean, it's a fun little kids show... I mean.. first you have to turn your brain off. I completely agree with all of your comments, but it's a pretty standard little kids show. In little kids shows, the main characters are rarely put in any danger (save some really popular family titles)

Its basically everything I expected it to be being already familiar with the Dinosaur King games. You just really have to turn your brain off... because Dinos with unexplained superpowers... ^_^;;

However the voices and presentation fit, and 4Kids is targeting the correct audience with the series. 4Kids did a real nice job on bringing this over, and I think it has potential to catch on with at least grade school children (maybe even middle school) There is no way it'll restore 4Kids status to pokemon level, I don't even think this will be a real long running series like pokemon, but I think it can get pretty popular.

SEGA made that switch two years ago IIRC, I think they support 4Kids for the same reason Microsoft does, 4Kids still has pretty big brand recognition even with it's recent losses. I think that the companies are just getting the product name out there, (and possibly make a little scratch off of the management of the brand) they can't realistically be expected a Pokémon/Yu-Gi-Oh-esqe takeoff.

even though it's a brand name with a seriously negative reputation? Hell, why would Sega even need something like that if they themselves are a pretty recognizable brand name as is?

I saw it, I do like dinosaurs, in fact alot kids like dinosaurs.

A DS game will be release soon. Too bad the US won't get the arcade verison since the Arcades had died out.

Are you sure? I don't think arcades are dead, and I'm sure Dinosaur King was released here...

Also, whoever said Sega gave 4Kids' voice actors the boot for Sonic was wrong. Sega is STILL using the 4Kids voice actors for Sonic games.
