Discord alternatives

Considering the rolling out of the age verification thing in Discord, and that it was never really that good for privacy



If you were using discord extensively for your personal communications, were you considering switching?

I only use Signal for discussions with close friends and family.

there is a couple of platforms that try to mimic that discord feel such as

Fluxer

im not opposed to possibly hopping ship on discord (although losing 8 years worth of chats and memories would definitely be difficult) the issue is having anyone to actually talk to on there, most of my friends have no problem with discord and don't really have a desire to leave, so i don't think it'd be easy to convince them to try something new.
 
Well if you guys make a Bulbagarden channel on some Discord alternative I'd gladly join. I've mentioned before that I really wanna leave Discord but my friend group doesn't (even though they all like to complain about it too).
 
Having communities and community leaders jump ship is what could hasten the process.
Similarly to other platform switching, people go where they think other people are. If the ones who have big platforms joined a lot would follow.
And someone has to build that critical mass, it is not something that happens by itself.
People don't join alternative platforms because they think no one is there. It is circular "logic".
Being the first can break the cycle and bring others on board.
I don't like having to censor myself when talking to friends, because of lack of encryption etc.
 
Oh I don't even care about privacy, I just really dislike Discord in general, like most other popular social media apps/sites. Literally all I need is to chat about my interests and post pics and I wish there was something simple to do just that without all this feature bloat.

also maybe i am paranoid but i don't even trust these allegedly 'secure' or 'encrypted' services for privacy tbh.

not like i use any of these things for shit that would get me in legal trouble anyway because i'm not stupid, you don't do communications like that over the internet.
 
the thing with Signal is that their 'requires a telephone number to verify your account and you need an Android or iOS device to create an account' makes that an immediate 'no go' for me

Yes, I obviously do have a phone number and I do have an Android device. But I'm not giving anyone my phone number for verification and requiring me to use my Android phone to create an account is also no. I'm not gonna use this on mobile anyway. Piss off with that.
 
ugh i've been wanting a discord alternative for years at this point, but the thing that made the jump from skype to discord so (relatively) easy was the massive improvement that it was.
remember having only one chat and every time you called everyone would get pinged? the ads on the interface? how badly it could slow down your computer?

my beef with discord aside from the privacy concerns is also the pay-walling of basic features behind nitro, and the fact that every discord announcement feels patronizing lol.
we'd need something really game changing to provoke a move to another platform, given that the average user (and i mean really average, not us) doesn't really care about whats going on privacy wise

This is where I'm at - Discord has issues, but no alternative that I've encountered is fully-featured to my satisfaction, and none of them represent the same level of... I guess letting out a breath? That the jump from Skype to Discord represented. Until such time as alternatives are clearly superior in terms of features, not just privacy options (which I always look on warily as possibly impermanent), those alternatives are necessarily going to remain niche.
