Along with playing Thusa Doom, Djimon Hounsou is bolstering his genre cred by voicing Marvel’s Black Panther on the upcoming animated series to air on BET, this according to Variety.

The series will be adapted from Marvel’s Black Panther series, and as such, will be directed and produced by Reginald Hudlin, who also wrote the series. Denys Cowan BET Sr. Vice President, Animation will design.

Speaking of the character, Hounsou said, “It's a blessing for African Americans and minorities to have a superhero they can identify with.”

Black Panther will mark Marvel’s first prime time animated series when it debuts in early 2009, Marvel Animation President Eric Rollman told the trade, adding, “Djimon raises the bar for all involved as we bring the best in the animation business together to execute that vision.”

While the animated series itself will follow the early issues of the Hudlin-penned series, the comic book series is slated for a restart in February, and will feature a new, female version of the character.

I think this guy can pull it off, and make Black Panther a surprise hit. Would also be kind of cool to see him in a live-action Black Panther (definitely a better choice than Wesley Snipes).

I really hope the TV series isn't as racist as the comic books. Black Panther and Wakanda apparently have a cure for all of the world's diseases but won't share it because the white men don't deserve it. And that's just the tip of the ice berg.

Which series was THAT?

I think shortly after Black Panther and Storm were married, it was discussed that Wakanda had cured cancer but refused to share the cure with any other country. The recent Black Panther series has been the worst. Pretty much the main villain of every single comic is some racist white guy. Even during an arc where the Black Panther went into space to fight for black rights on an alien planet who were being suppressed by white alien gangsters. I wish I was making this up.

Well, Reginald Hudlin IS the President of BET.

But you're forgetting the return of Erik Killmonger. And the fact that there ARE more white villains than black. Plus all of the outside aggression Wakanda's constantly facing (besides, how many diseases can the US easily cure that they don't hand out to other countries?).

As for the alien world, they were Skrulls with a long-standing history in the Marvel Universe. Their entire solar system is known for copying things on earth, and it only makes sense that some would copy the 60s and the Civil Rights Movement. And them preferring equal rights to everyone over a gladiatorial/monarchistic (of sorts) society seems fairly normal.

In those cases, it's usually because the cures are cost-effective for industrial nations but not developing nations. I don't know of any case of the US discovering a cure for a major disease and then hoarding it because the rest of the world wasn't worthy enough.

Couldn't the same be true of Wakanda? I mean, combined with their normal insular nature, and the fact that there really aren't any companies in the country, just...T'Challa selling stuff to his super buddies.
