When I was a kid I thought that Pokemon were saying the name of their attacks when they do them. Obviously not the literal names but the name of the attacks in their own language. Like, Pikachu always says "Piii, Kaaa, CHU!!!" when he does a Thunderbolt and I couldn't imagine what else he's saying while preparing his attack. I guess I get this from other shows when the characters want to do some sort of attack they always say the names of their attacks while they do them.

I guess it would be kind of difficult to do that with attacks like Growl and Bite as it's pretty difficult to talk while growling or biting but still, for other attacks it'd be possible. What do you guys think?

That seems plausible enough. Most of the Pokémon do this. Seeing how they say their name as substitutes for real words, I would agree. I haven't ever thought about it this way, but yeah. I'd say so.

It would seem awkward though, like seeing someone scream "PUNCH!!" when they punched something or "READ!" when they opened a book.

I've always just figured they were Vocal expressions like "Kiya" or "Hiya!"
or maybe like how animals use Grunts, Growls, Snarls and Howls in fights.

Ironically, I could actually imagine someone doing that,
Yelling "Karate Chop!" when doing a Karate Chop or "Roundhouse Kick" when doing a Roundhouse Kick.

Some Pokémon which can speak human language can say the names of their moves in the human language. Otherwise, they might speak in their tone of their names. Give an example, if Raichu does Thunderbolt, he will say "Thun-der-bolt!" if he can speak human language, otherwise "Ra-i-chu!" if not. This is technically similar but we humans did not know what they are doing.

I always imagined that they weren't saying their names, but that we named them after what the sounds they tended to say while attacking and concentrating on their power.

Whis-CASH! *swamps with tidal wave/earthquake*

Huh, I don't know what it is, but let's call it a Whiscash!

As an example, Meowth in the anime says "Fury Swipes-da nyaa!!" or something when he uses Fury Swipes, so yeah, I guess they do say the name of the attacks in their own language.

Well...every anime ever has the hero say their attack name before releasing it.

"Getsuga Tensho!"
"Wind Scar!"

So to me I'd prefer it as opposed to the way things already are.

Ash: Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!
Pikachu: Pikapikaaaachuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

-Reverse side-

Ash: Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!
Pikachu: Thunderbolt!

...Scratch that, both sound weird.

I would say it's possible. Ash's Pikachu has it's own language and there's actually certain phrases he uses when he's referring to certain people or Pokemon. For example , he uses ""Pikapi" when referring to Ash, "PiPipi" when referring to Togepi, "Pika-Chu" when referring to Brock, and "Pikaka" when referring to Dawn. (Full list : here ) And other Pokemon have their own language when they say their name to communicate. So I would believe that they also shout out their names when using attacks.

This is all the proof we need that Pokemon are Magical Girls. I'm okay with this development.

I don't think so :D They just say their name to express the power of their attack, similar to the way tennis players (especially women) do :3 They shout because it helps them to concentrate and produce more power. They don't shout "BACKHAND!"

Anyways, that's just how I think it is :3

The only Pokémon who say his attack is Meowth from the Pokémon Anime. The Pokémon who actually can talk in the anime don't say their names when attacking. They usually simply shout "RAAAWR".

Other then that, nope. Pokémon never talk (in the anime, they say their name), so it's highly unlikely they also shout their attack names.

Well, the other Pokemon who can talk like humans don't say the attacks they're using either. Usually they stay silent, grunt, or say "hiyaaaa!"

Another aspect to take into consideration is Pokemon Personalities.

What A Pokemon says when they attack (or even if they say anything at all),
I suspect, depends a lot on that Pokemon's Personality.

Meowth is a perfect example. I suspect a Pokemon who's easily angered,
as well as somewhat egotistical, would be more likely to announce their attack
as a show of force/intimidation tactic.

Some will probably shout out their names of their attacks.

Others will probably shout like real life martial artists.

Not necessarily the name of the move it is executing. It could be just a cry.

Some Pokémon can speak human language instead of just saying their own name. Some will shout the attack names like "Thunderbolt!!!!!", and some will shout like in the martial arts.
