I'm guessing that they do, but since only the older fans that have been with the series since the beginning would even remember them, they're not doing anything about it.

What do you guys think? Do you think we'll ever see either of these guys again or will they just fade into obscurity?

And what about Lapras, who we haven't seen or heard anything from since late Johto?

I'm guessing since we haven't heard about Pidgeot and Primape since back then that we wont see them again. Same with Butterfree and Lapras. I'm still hoping they make an appearance at least once.

But w/e, just shows the writers made Ash a dumbass.

Since they no longer serve a purpose to the story (or in the case of Primeape, never having served a purpose at all.) the odds of the writers reminiscing and going back is pretty much zilch.

I think Butterfree in Spurt! is the last we've seen of Ash's Kanto throwaways.

All of Ash's released Pokemon were shown in the second Battle Frontier opening, "Spurt."

Likewise Ash brought up Butterfree in two different DP episodes, when the group was talking about their first captures.

So yes, the writers clearly remember them. But of course, they have no desire to bring them back.

I so wish they'd let Butterfree have a one-episode return. They kept on teasing me with those flashbacks, damn them! :(

Pidgeot deserves the same, especially because they had that awful line about how Ash would be back for it after getting the GS Ball and then it was just completely forgotten. Primeape wasn't that important in the long run, so I'm not surprised that it's not had a cameo.

Yeah, the writers still remember Ash's old Pokes. It's just they haven't appeared in a while.

Hehe, I just watched the episode with Pidgeot 20 minutes ago. They remember, but they don't care. I mean, hey, it's been nearly a decade—why bother?

The funny thing is Ash mentions Pidgeot again in the Falkner Gym battle ep in Johto. After Ash sees Falkner's Pidgeot, Ash tells him he used to have a Pidgeot in the past.

It's really weird that the writers had Ash bring up Pidgeot again in very early Johto, when only 15 eps before he was back in Pallet and didn't even check on it.

That would be the Pokemon writers for ya. Sure as hell isn't anything new. If Ash dumps a Pokemon, chances are, it'll be forgotten. Unless, of course, you're Charizard.

Forgot about the openings - I was only using evidence from the episodes themselves.

Those Pokemon really do need a cameo - I agree. They won't come back full time (Primeape especially) since there's really no reason for them to. But I want to know what happened to them. We got a nice dose of that for Lapras, at least. Why can't Pidgeot and Butterfree get the same treatment?

Why can't Pidgeot and Butterfree get the same treatment?

Probably because its been over 10 years. This should have been done back in Johto when they were still somewhat recent Pokemon, like how Lapras appeared again, but now that we're 13 years into the show...well, I guess they feel there's no point.

I'm just glad we still see his older Pokemon from time to time, but I assume the released ones won't be seen beyond cameos in the openings or brief mentions.

Which is unfortunate. But they really could do something if they made it relevant to today... but I'm not sure how they could, to be honest.

Ash has had way too many Pokemon for the writers to keep track of... and chances are, with Gen V, they're going to keep adding to his team. Why couldn't they have done it like the manga and had new protagonists every arc? Original Series = Ash, Advance Generation = May and Brendan, Diamond and Pearl = Dawn and Barry, maybe Lucas.

That would have kept my interest in the show. But instead, we have Ashley David Ketchum, who releases or abandons his Pokemon at Oak's so often that we barely have enough time to get used to some of them (Glalie, anyone?).

Thing is, Butterfree and Primeape were essentially both released - Ash and both pokémon knew it. If Butterfree returned, wouldn't that cheapen the goodbye in the first place?

Lapras never really did belong to Ash, he was a custodian of Lapras, little more. The point of Lapras was that it was a baby when they found it, and matured with it's pod.

Pidgeot on the other hand, deserves mention again, if only because Ash said he'd come back for it and it's an integral part of his character that he treats his pokémon's feelings seriously.

Pidgeot probably got ignored simply because Ash has Swellow and Staraptor now.

Noctowl wasn't the same since it was a psychic owl, but Swellow and Staraptor essentially killed any chance of Pidgeot to return.

How many normal/flying type birds does Ash need? So since Pidgeot is already gone, they ignore it since he can use Swellow or Staraptor instead.

Pidgeot doesn't need to rejoin his team ... it could turn up as part of a small story arc, at least to pay homage to the promise Ash made in the first place. Charizard would have got the same treatment in any case, were it not for the fact that Charizard is essentially a western dragon

Chances are, though, that they'll give him the "generic bird" next gen as well and Swellow's purpose will be totally gone. Since Staraptor is the best of the normal/flying birds Ash has owned, we may see more of him in the Gen V league, though I highly doubt it.

Ash's Sinnoh League team is perhaps his best - Pikachu, Infernape, Staraptor, Buizel, Gible, and Grotle, the last two of which are subject to evolution. Though he will very well need some backup - none of his released Pokemon will be that useful... except maybe Lapras if there's a water arena and Gliscor for further air support.

Which leads me to the question about Gliscor. Are the writers going to remember Gliscor or is Gliscor just going to be Primeape v2?

I always got the feeling the only reason Charizard and Squirtle returned is because of the immense popularity of their characters and the Kanto Pokemon in general.

Plus it would feel weird for Ash to only have Bulbasaur and not the other two. Thankfully at least Ash's Kanto team gets to come back, sans Pidgeot.

Of course they do,they have everything archived. The butterfree flashback is enough proof of that.

There simply is no reason to bring them back, and even if they do,they will be overshowed by Ash´s newer and stronger pokemon. The starters didn´t got this treat simply becouse...well,they were his starters, they are popular. Primeap and Pidgeot? meh,an episode about Swellow or Ambipom would be much more interesting.

I dont think it would be stale or anything if butterfree got one episode.

But yeah 99.999999 percent they are not returning to ash's team. I think its fine when ash leaves his pokemon with Oak but i hate it when he gives them to someone else. Its nice that Charizard and Squirtle return.

Now that Ash has a strong fighting type in Infernape, and strong flying/normal types in swellow and staraptor, neither Pidgeot nor Primape are necessary to his team. I would like them to return though

Maybe next time ash will be going back to pallet town through the forest and is attacked by team rocket, but Pidgeot uses a powerful sky attack to defeat team rocket and is reunited with ash lol,.. well we can all dream lol

No.

Oh wait ! can't make one word replies anymore... I need another word... BANANAS...

Seriously, the released pokemon of Ash (i.e. Lapras, Butterfree and Pidgeot) are 99,999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% sure not to come back. Do the writers remember them ? Yes. Do they care to please the only few fans that still remember them and dissect the anime enough to remember Ash's promise to Pidgeot ? No.

As for Ash's in training pokemon (Charizard, Squirtle, Gliscor and Primeape or Dawn's ambipom) they were never officially released (like how Misty left some pokes in the Cerulean Gym and how Brock left some pokes in the Pewter gym) so they can be called back anytime... For Primeape, he really falls more in the releases category, but the other three, not so much. They'll probably be back (yes, even Gliscor Scott, stop hyperventilating)
